Hi wilma1313,

My apologies, I misread your post explaining you needed to use Option 2. You are in the right place.

Lets see if we can see what is going on. In the Recovery Console

type the following commands hitting enter after each one:

cd system32\drivers
dir

After you type dir and hit enter you will be presented with a file list. Use the space bar to scroll down one page at a time until you get to the files that start with the letter v

Have a look for these files
  • volsnap.old
  • volsnap.sys
Let me know what you find.

You can leave the Recovery Console running if you wish and post back the information from another computer. Otherwise hit the esc key (upper left on keyboard) and type exit.

Thanks

Hi, It is probably going to take me til Friday to get at his computer. its bedtime for me and then work schedule and activities for the next 2 nights are probably going to delay me, but wanted to let you know so you don't shut down the post :-) I'm very much with you, just not the next couple days - unless I get lucky and can scrape up a little time - not seeing that happening right now. Thanks for all the help.

Hi wilma1313,

Ok that would indicate that the rename didn't work.

Let's try this again. Please leave the computer in the Recovery Console until I tell you to reboot.

Depending if you stayed in the Recovery Console or if you shut the computer down will determine your starting point for these instructions. Please use instructions 1 or 2

1. If you did not leave the computer in the Recovery Console please boot to the Recovery Console
  • From the C:\windows > prompt type the following lines hitting enter after each one.
    cd system32\drivers
    ren volsnap.sys volsnap.new
    dir

*Note*First line
  • there is a space after cd
  • a new command prompt, C:\windows\system32\drivers should appear
Second line
  • there is a space after ren and one after .sys
  • cursor should move down one line, please note any error message given.

After you type dir and hit enter use the space bar to scroll down one page at a time until you get to the files that start with the letter v. Is volsnap.new or volsnap.sys present?

2. If the computer was in the Recovery Console and still at the C:\Windows\system32\Drivers > prompt please start here.

ren volsnap.sys volsnap.new
dir

*Note*First line
  • there is a space after ren and one after .sys
  • cursor should move down one line, please note any error message given.

After you type dir and hit enter use the space bar to scroll down one page at a time until you get to the files that start with the letter v. Is volsnap.new or volsnap.sys present?

Hi wilma1313,

That's good. If you haven't reached the end of the list yet either hit the esc key or use the space bar to reach the end of the list.

When the C:\windows\System32\Drivers > prompt is displayed please type

copy C:\WINDOWS\ServicePackFiles\i386\volsnap.sys

Hit enter. You should recieve a message 1 file(s) copied.

If you recieve this message please type exit and hit enter. The computer should now boot to windows.

If you recieve any other messgae Stop and let me know.

Hi wilma1313,

Don't panic. The file was there when you ran the command previously so I', sure it's still there.

Are you sure you typed the line correctly? These is a space after copy

copy C:\WINDOWS\ServicePackFiles\i386\volsnap.sys

Hi wilma1313,

which file was present before?

This file
C:\WINDOWS\ServicePackFiles\i386\volsnap.sys

You recieved a message asking if you wanted to overwrite the existing file when you issued the command before.

Third line asked me if I wanted to overwrite volsnap.sys.

Do this

Type cd "C:\WINDOWS\ServicePackFiles\i386"

Hit enter the command prompt should now be C:\WINDOWS\ServicePackFiles\i386 >

Type dir and hit enter. Use the space bar to scroll down one page at a time until you get to the files that start with the letter v. Is volsnap.sys present?

Hi wilma1313,

I'll try to unconfuse you. :) We are looking in 2 different locations

We looked in C:\windows\system32\drivers In that location there should only be volsnap.new.

The last place I had you look was in C:\WINDOWS\ServicePackFiles\i386 , volsanp.sys should be and is there.

To explain what we are doing. First I had you rename the copy of volsnap.sys in this location C:\windows\system32\drivers The purpose of the rename is to retain a copy of that file in that location for backup purposes. Windows will not use that file but will now allow us to copy a new copy of the file there with the orignal name.

We are going to copy the file from C:\WINDOWS\ServicePackFiles\i386 to C:\windows\system32\drivers.

Does help understand what's going on?

Please tell me what command prompt you are at currently. Does it say C:\WINDOWS\ServicePackFiles\i386 > ?
