Lets see if those files are actually present on your system.

Boot to recovery console from the CD you created from rc.iso.
Type dir \windows\system32\ntoskrnl.exe and press Enter. The response should be something like this:

Volume in drive C has no label.
Volume Serial Number is E07F-2353

Directory of C:\windows\system32

02/17/2010 09:10 AM 2,189,952 ntoskrnl.exe
1 File(s) 2,189,952 bytes

Type dir \windows\system32\dllcache\ntoskrnl.exe and press Enter. Response should be something like:

Volume in drive C has no label.
Volume Serial Number is E07F-2353

Directory of C:\windows\system32\dllcache

02/17/2010 09:10 AM 2,189,952 ntoskrnl.exe
1 File(s) 2,189,952 bytes

Hi cld, Can you confirm you have access to another computer that is capable of burning an iso image to a CD. Do you have any usb storage devices such as a flashdrive? We may need on also. Thanks

Hi cld,

We see if we can access your computer and try to find a copy of the missing file. If we can access the computer we will have other option available if we can't find the file.

On the good computer create this notepad and save it to your usb device.

Open a new Notepad session
  • Click the Start button, click run
  • in the run box type notepad
  • click ok
  • In the notepad, Click "Format" and be certain that Word Wrap is not checked.
  • Copy and paste all the text in the code box below into the Notepad. Do Not copy the word CODE

/md5start
ntoskrnl.exe
/md5stop

In the notepad
  • Click File, Save as..., and set the Save in to your usb device
  • In the filename box, type (including quotation marks) as the filename: "look.txt"
  • Click save

Two programmes to download

First

ISOBurner this will allow you to burn OTLPE.iso to a CD and make it bootable. Just install the programme, from there on in it is fairly automatic. Instructions

Second

note: when saving this program make sure you save it with the save as file type set to all files and the file after it is downloaded is 292mb.

  • Download OTLPE.iso and burn to a CD using ISO Burner. NOTE: This file is 292Mb in size so it may take some time to download.
  • When downloaded double click and this will then open ISOBurner to burn the file to CD

After the iso is finished burning, transfer both the CD and usb device to the problem computer.
  • Reboot your system using the boot CD you just created.
Note : If you do not know how to set your computer to boot from CD follow the steps here
  • As the CD needs to detect your hardware and load the operating system, I would recommend a nice cup of tea whilst it loads :)
Please be patient as it is running from the cd and can be quiet slow. One of the first screens you will see is a confirmation it is booting from the cd. This will be followed by a screen saying starting Reatogo X PE. It may take awhile to load the necessary files. You should be presented with a light blue screen followed shorty by a Reatogo desktop. It will have what looks like a Swiss Army knife and some icons on it.

On the desktop, please locate OTLPE
  • Double-click on the OTLPE icon.
  • When asked "Do you wish to load the remote registry", select Yes
  • When asked "Do you wish to load remote user profile(s) for scanning", select Yes
  • Ensure the box "Automatically Load All Remaining Users" is checked and press OK
  • OTL should now start. Change the following settings
    • Change Standard Registry to All
    • Open your usb device and locate the file you saved there (look.txt)
    • In the window under Custom Scans/Fixes copy and paste the contents of look.txt
  • Press Run Scan to start the scan.
  • When finished, the file will be saved in drive C:\OTL.txt
  • Copy this file to your USB drive.
  • To copy the file, Right click the file and select send to : select the USB drive.
  • Confirm that it has copied to the USB drive by selecting it
  • Please post the contents of the C:\OTL.txt file in your reply.

Thanks

hi Oldman960 i downloaded everything as instructed and booted up the bad PC &....when i double clicked the OTLPE i didnt get anything about the remote registry or anything like that so i just clicked ok and recieved a message that said NO WINDOWS INSTALLATION FOUND that does not sound very good. I DO REALIZE that i should NOT use these programs WITHOUT guidance & i WOULD NOT allow a program to run unless told to do so. that being said i saw that i was able to access documents because the window that opened had "my computer" etc (not sure about my programs, videos and such, but my pics were there) when i seached. there do seem to be some interesting tools available UNDELETE +, 7ZIP and a couple of things for the disk. are ANY of those safe to use unguided in the future? like maybe if i deleted something by accident, or wanted to zip something, maybe theres an instructional manual? one thing that i did open, but did NOT allow to run was the Magical Jelly keyfinder and the interesting thing is that the "do you want to load the remote registry" question DID come up. i didnt allow it to do anything for the above stated reasons though.

Hi You shouldn't play with any of the tools. Accidental changes to your system may be made without you knowing. It's extremely difficult to recover from something like that. You should be able to access all of your personal data and move it to a usb drive just in case this comes to a reformat. Were you asked for a location of your Windows install? What operating system including service pack is the good computer and what service pack is on the sick one? Thanks

I've uploaded a copy of ntoskrnl.exe from my XP Pro + SP3 + all updates to my Windows Live account as ntoskrnl.zip.

Oldman960 will provide instructions on what to do with it, though I suspect there is more wrong here than just that file. Would really like to be proved wrong though. :smack:

Oldman960 the good computer is running xp pro service pack 3. i have a total of 25, maybe 30g of usb drive space so i will have to see if theres some free online storage because i would definitely need more than that. no when i ran OTLPE it only said "NO WINDOWS INSTALLATION FOUND" it didnt ask for a place. the sick pc has xp home service pack 2. i hope that i dont have o reformat, i have some really great programs that i got from Give Away of the Day, which is a sight that gives away a full program each day (sometimes it is "lite" version but its usually not). Ztruker thank you and i suspect the same. i more than anyone hope to be poven wrong as well. :pullhair:

Hi cld, I'm not sure how using a file from SP3 would work on SP2. I do have a copy of ntoskrnl.exe we could try if you are willing. Let me know.

hi oldman960, question..from what i understand data isnt actually really "erased" even when a drive is formatted, is this true? i believe that there are ways (programs) to recover this deleted data, am i correct? i guess i'd be willing to try that, but what could the possible consequences be? is it possible to get a copy of that file from SP2? and lastly, it said NO WINDOWS INSTALLATION FOUND, wouldnt that mean that its no longer installed? or is the fact that certain things can still be run on it and the fact that my pics, programs (not sure if it was all of them) are still there reason to believe otherwise?

Hi cld,

I'm not sure why OTL couldn't find the windows directory, I plan on asking the author.

question..from what i understand data isnt actually really "erased" even when a drive is formatted, is this true? i believe that there are ways (programs) to recover this deleted data, am i correct?

If you have the cash it may be possible to recover some of it.

Keep in mind we are not in Windows when booting from he iso. We are sort of on the outside looking in.

It's easy enough to see if the windows folder is still on the computer and intact.

With the computer booted from the iso, double click "My Computer" When the window opens, click Folders at the top.

See if you can navigate to C:\Windows Click on it, you should see some folders and files in the right hand panel. Let me know what you find.

For online storage, have you considered Mozy? 4.95 per month unlimited.

I'll upload a copy to Media Fire and post a link.

Hi cld,

The problem we had will OTLPE may have been a corrupt download or bad burn. We can investigate that further if we need to.

Since you are able to access windows let's try to replace the file and go from there.

http://download27.me...nnwy2z/user.zip

On the good computer, download the file from the link above. Save it to the desktop and unzip it to your usb device.

On the ill computer
  • boot with the OTLPE disk if the computer has been shut down.
  • Attach the usb device and open it
  • locate the file ntoskrnl.exe
  • right click it and select copy.

Next

Double click "MY Computer" on the desktop.

Navigate to this folder C:\WINDOWS\system32
  • Right click it and select paste

Double click the system32 folder and confirm the presence of ntoskrnl.exe in the right hand panel.

Next, close all open windows and click the start button located at the bottom left of the REATOGO desktop. Click Shutdown.

The CD should eject and the computer will shut down. Try to boot the computer normally. Let us know if the computer booted to normal windows.

Thanks

There is quite a difference in size and timestamp between SP2 and SP3 version of ntoskrnl.exe so go with the SP2 version from oldman960.
