hi if you have a servicing agreement that offers free repairs...then why not take advantage of it? Its inconvenient being without the machine for a while, but if your back up is good, its just a question of waiting... Regards paws and yep I like the self edit!

I'm guessing that's the spoiler

it's not the inconvenience that bugs me overall (although that does bug me) it's the fact that when they have your computer (I'm only talking about
Spoiler
there are many good repair shops out there) they watch numerous films  (from potentially unsafe locations such as USB memory sticks etc.) to 'test' the good function of your computer (they did this when i sent it in with power problems  ) and they are so stupid, they forgot to clear the "Recently Opened Documents" on the start menu :smack:

overall, there service is OK at best. My Rating:

Regards

Duey

P.S. i will send it in after i've tried whichever method of BIOS/CMOS resetting you suggest (either software or holding power button)

Hi, I understand... If you flashed the BIOS to the latest version ( for Vista) after you had set up the multi boot..and after you cleared them, then there should be no need to reset it further..... If the bios chip is accepting the latest firmware Ok then that generally indicates the chip is OK.....(but not always!) Try it with another hard drive,(a clean one with nothing on it at all) with default bios settings...if you still have the problem then its off to the servicing facility.... Regards paws ps don't forget to make sure that everything is backed up correctly before sending it in...

I would try a different HDD but it's a laptop and uses SATA and i only have desktop SATA drives (i know you can use laptop in desktop but not the other way around) so would need to buy/borrow one and i don't see the need to buy one just to test.

Thanks

Does anyone local to sheffield (more accurately, S35) have a blank or spare Sata laptop HDD (in working order) that I can borrow to install an OS on to test? I will data wipe the HDD (using DBAN with an 8 pass wipe) install the OS and then Re-Data-Wipe it and return it? The only reason I ask is because it has been suggested to try a different HDD before sending it to the "Servicing Facility" AKA The Tech Guys which really is a last resort. If not, then i'll send it in. If i haven' got a reply by 21/2/10 then i'll just send it anyway FAO Admins / Staff:

Thanks in advance Duey

Hi paws, Firstly, Thanks for all your suggestions. Secondly, i haven't sent the computer in to the 'Servicing Facility' but i've just done ALL windows updates (for xp) and it just booted up fine. I'll turn it off for an hour or 2 (it usually takes less time than this if i've just turned it off before it does it's "Come back in about 10 mins and i might load" thing...) I'll post back with results (Here's Hoping...) **Fingers Crossed** Regards, Duey

'twas all to no avail. turned it off (from start menu) in the evening (about 1am lol) turned it back on at about 5pm and it took ages. i think i might have a reason why it booted once - told it to shutdown then was given the option of "Install Updates and shut down" and i also have the "require reason for shutdown enabled" on XP. I decided to install updates and shut down. when i turned it on again, it worked like it should have done (nice and fast). this probably makes it harder to work out where the fault lies but oh well... lol
