I will ~try~ at work and see if anyone has xp media center edition. If I find someone with "Windows Pro with the same level of service pack" doesn't that mean that I lose my Media Center features until I can get the Media Center Edition?

Hi kapusta, Thanks for the info.....you're right life's not easy.... The fact that SFC is asking you to insert the Windows XP MCE installation disc(s) (Win XP Pro will do (usually!) indicates that it has found Protected System files to be either missing, damaged or in the wrong place....it has failed to copy them to the correct location from other parts of your computer so that is why it is asking you to insert the disc (so it can copy across fresh copies of the damaged or missing files and put them in the correct place.....It's good to have all the protected files undamaged and in the correct place, but its no guarantee that it will may make your sound work..... the damaged or missing files might have no relevance to the sound issue..... they might or might not...we just don't know..... if I had your machine in the workshop it would only take a few minutes to find out........ but from thousands of miles away...... its not so easy! I therefore suggest you consider adopting the following strategy........ 1 Skip the work on SFC until such time as you can get to your work colleagues....find the guys/gals who know about Windows (not necessarily the same thing as the ones who say they Know....... and don't worry, Win XP is a well respected operating system that will serve many folks and business firms well all the while Microsoft continue to provide security fixes and patches (which they will until 2014... Ask them to provide you with the loan of an installation disc with WIN XP MCE with your level of Service Pack for the purposes of running SFC (this is perfectly legal and breaks no rules) if they don't have one readily "on the shelf" then ask them to slipstream you one....... an expert will say "fine when I get a few minutes I'll do that for you"......if the guy/gal doesn't then it could be you are talking to someone who pretends to know about Windows but in reality doesn't or is just too busy at the moment, or who can't be bothered to help out a colleague.....it's good to find out the reason..... 2 Please don't even open regedit until you have backed up your Registry with Erunt (as previously advised) 3 I can suggest some further work in the Registry, but I think borrowing a copy of the installation disc is the right way for you to go at the moment, its what I would recommend you do anyway. 4 On the assumtion you will skip using SFC for a day or so can you please continue and provide me with the information from Device Manager as set out in my post 25 step 6 and 7 and I will respoind with the next steps Regards paws

@ kapusta, I have just seen your last post...it's worth trying the XP Pro disc if you can't borrow the WIN XP MCE disc(s).......it will only be used to replace missing or damaged system files.... not to reinstall Windows...so you should lose nothing. Regards paws

I used regedit because one of your links (or one of your links' links) (updatexp.com with Marc Liron) told me to: "Now you will need to tell your computer you now have the files on your PC. We do this is the registry (type regedit in the Run box on the start menu) by navigating to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\ CurrentVersion\Setup You will see various entries here on the right hand side. The one we want is called: SourcePath It probably has an entry pointing to your CD-ROM drive, and that is why it is asking for the XP CD. All we need to do is change it to: C:\ Simply double click the SourcePatch setting and a new box will pop up allowing you to make the change. Now restart your computer and try scannow sfc again!"

Hi kapusta,

Please don't even open regedit until you have backed up your Registry with Erunt (as previously advised)

I said this because its easy to make your machine unusable if you make a mistake in the Registry......if you make a mistake in Windows then you will often get a nice message " are you sure you want to ......"
whilst working in the Registry if you make a mistake there is no warning.......your command will be implemented even if you have made a slight mistake so that it could wreck your machine (machine may just not start).......so that's why we always should back up the Registry before we even open regedit.....so we stand a chance of putting things back to normal if the worst should happen... There's nothing wrong in editing the Registry...but it best always to back it up first (using Erunt which is good) before you start.

To protect you, I removed from your post, your Windows Product Key (edited your post ) as this is private information that is best not displayed in public.....(bad people might get hold of it and use it to your disadvantage.)

Good news...the information you provided from your Device Manager indicates strongly what is causing the sound problem........
at some time a USB device (Angel Mpeg USB) that has audio facilities included in it has been plugged in a USB port on your machine, but the drivers have not installed correctly (so it won't work properly) and also it has removed the drivers for your Dell onboard sound, so that won't work either, leaving you without any sound, at all.

The solution is probably to install the correct drivers for your onboard sound and I will get on to the Dell website for you and find out where you can get them from for your particular machine. When I've located them I'll post back here with a direct link so you can download them.

If I need any more information from you to help me locate the correct drivers I'll post back here .....
Regards

Hi kapusta,
here's the link you need to down load the driver
http://support.dell..../...=&typeid=-1
The driver you want to down load is the last one in the list, it's called:
Sigmatel Driver v5.10.0.5515_...
its for Stac 92XX C-Major HD Audio and when you come to download it (if your browser puts up a warning..allow it to download) the file name should be:
R171789.exe and it's about 7MB in size.

Important

Before downloading this and installing it please do the following:
1 Make sure that your Angel Audio/video tuner USB device is physically removed from your computer...unplug it please, (but keep it safe.)
2 Now go back into Device Manager and uninstall any references to it (the Angel device, if you find more than one reference to it, uninstall each one, right click and click on uninstall)
3 Close down your computer in the normal way (a full shutdown please, not a sleep/standby/hibernate) and wait 30 seconds with a blank black screen
4 Restart your computer
5 wait 5 minutes (not a second less!)
6 Now follow the link I gave you above, download the file, extract it, install it, and close down your computer again, wait 30 seconds with a blank black screen then:
7 Restart your computer and wait for 5 minutes (not a second less!)
8 now try your sound again (see post number 20 step 15 through to 18
let me know if you hit any problems.
regards

I was worried about the Angel business. I went to Add/Remove and did not really see anything with Angel Emuzed Luminate. I went and added the driver again to see what name comes up. I saw R95342. So I searched and found 2 folders by that name and deleted them: The original and the “(2)”. Then I searched folders named Download and found one in My Documents (?) with Angel in the name, so I deleted them and emptied the trash. There was no icon for Angel, Emuzed, or whatever in Start, All Programs.

OK. Duh!

I suppose that you know why I did not get the bootup theme.
I got the powerdown theme and then when i rebooted (waiting less that 30 seconds and less than 5 minutes, THIS TIME) I got the bootup theme.

Do I now go to:
http://dell.driversd...D...um=3&show=0
and reload the driver for Emuzed Angel USB TV Tuner?

Do I plug in the TV Tuner now?

(I don't think I changed any settings when I revisited your posting #20. I think everything was the same. Except that this time I got ding ping.)

Thanks for editing out the Product Key. I knew that I was probably providing too much information, but I didn't want to provide too little and have to wait for yet another response. I hope that no bad people got it during the time is was up.

"Go to the start menu,
Click run,
Type in regedit, (it will open the Registry Editor)
Highlight My Computer
in left box of registry editor,
Click File in Registry Editor drop down menu
Click export, and choose a place to save it to."

(? ? ?

"A really good free cleaner is at http://www.ccleaner.com

It has a built in backup feature that stores the registry in My Documents."

My external hard drive has 232 GB Total Size and 231 GB Free Space. I’m surprised that I’ve used up so little. Is this enough to export/save Registry Editor?
