Ok.. That does clear things up. Lets focus on the desktop in this thread. I do suggest that you receive assistance in the malware removal forum to make sure your laptop is clean of malware, then post a new thread in the windows forum if you continue to have internet connectivity issues. Please do not use those registry cleaner tools to fix whatever problem you are having, I assure you that they are not going to fix anything about your "DNS problem." Its a common misconception that these programs are some kind of "magical pill," you can take to fix every problem under the sun. It is simply not true and they do more harm than good more often than not. Anyways, let me know how you come along on the desktop.

Great!! Keep an eye on it for "Windows is replacing bad cluster..." messages during stages 4 and 5.

Current situation is ... CHKDSK is checking the volume... CHKDSK is performing additional checking or recovery... CHKDSK is performing additional checking or recovery... CHKDSK is performing additional checking or recovery... 53% completed. At least it is back moving in the right direction. I dont mind if it takes awhile, though 75% back to 50% is a little discouraging.

Its now at 59%. Is this normal. How long does it normally take? Is it possible, (considering the server problems that I had) that I may have been infected when downloading the rc and/or IMGBurn and therefore the cd that I made may be corrupted?

Had got to 72%, went back to 65%, but then quickly went up to 73%. Just went to 100% complete.

When I rebooted, I choose "Start Windows Normally", instead of "Start From Last Good Known configuration." I hope this was the right choice. Though it seemed to work, everything seems to be back and working, although it was a little bit slow in loading the desktop. Thanks again appleoddity for all your help. Is there anyway of checking that everything is okay? Just to let you know that at the end of the recovery sequence it had the disk space listed, and underneath that it had the following 1. Bytes in each allocation unit. 2. Total allocation units on disk. 3. Allocation units available on disk. I wrote these numbers down in case they may be of any significance.

I don't mean to pester, but is there any way to make sure that everything is working properly. Is it also possible to find out what caused the problem. It would be interesting to know . Thanks again for all your help.

Hi Equssdico. Did you perform the chkdsk command with the /r switch? Like this: chkdsk /r

Those numbers that you wrote down. One of them should've said xx bytes in bad clusters. What was it?

Now that your laptop is booting, please perform a PCPitStop test on your computer so that I can get some better information about the health of your computer:

How to run PCPitStop's Overdrive tests:
  • Please click here to go to the PCPitStop Overdrive sign-up page: Signup at PCPitStop (You need to use Internet Explorer with this test so that an ActiveX control can be installed.)
  • Click "Create a free account"
  • Enter in your relevant information on the sign-up page. You must sign-up in order to have your results recorded so that we can take a look at them here.
  • After signing up you'll see the "Registration Complete" page, and you can click "Test Your System Now" to return to the test page.
  • Login with your newly created e-mail address and password on the left hand side.
  • Follow the directions to "Scan this system now." An activeX control will need to be installed. It is safe, and you should allow it to be installed.
  • Once the tests have been run, you will see an "Almost there" page requesting further information about your computer and your experience with PCPitStop, just scroll down to the bottom and click "GO."
  • A test results page will display, and I need the link to that page.
  • Look in the address bar of your browser. It will look like 'http://www.pcpitstop.com/betapit/...' Please copy and paste that here to the forum.

Note: PCPitStop may recommend that you use certain utilities to fix problems on your computer. At WhatTheTech, the help we provide is free. We do not endorse or recommend the use of any products PCPitStop may suggest. Instead, we prefer to help you with each issue manually without using possible pay to use programs.

After looking at that I will be able to better advise you.

I have tried both the new and old test, but each time it gets to the 3D performance test and then a pop up comes up saying Internet explorer has to close due problems encountered with internet add-on.

Per the PCPitStop website:

If your system crashes during the video test in part 2 (RunTests2.asp), your video driver is at fault. To work around the problem you can turn off acceleration. To do this, click Start | Settings | Control Panel | System | Performance. Click the Graphics button and move the slider for acceleration all the way to the left. You will need to restart your system for the change to take effect.
