Hi TOMT,

TOMT wrote:Hi Tallin, I have tried several times to copy/paste the info..... but I can't seem to get it... The info is there but as soon as I try and copy the info dissapears????? I even tried to print the info but same thing, a blank page.....

Firstly my apologies, with the free version of SIW.exe the so and so's will not allow you to copy and paste details..........only with the paid version can this be done. I am sorry I was asking you to do something that was impossible to do.

Here is another software program Sysspec which will tell you all about your RAM and everything else you want to know about your computer. Scroll down and download the
  • Recommended link1
  • run it
  • Click on Memory at the top
  • There you will find what type of RAM you need to purchase.
You can browse the rest of the program to find all other items you need to know about with your Computer.

Again my apologies, with best regards,

Hi Tallin, I have managed to get a screenshot of both the SIW and the Sysspec programs. I have confirmed the model of my board as being a :MSI 865PE Neo2-V This has 3 dimm slots, 2 green 1 purple. There is ram in Dimm1-green and Dimm3-purple. The specs say that this board will go to 3G of ram?? yet the SIW program says there is only 2 slots?? and can take 2G total??? Now i,m getting confused.... I have read what the programs are saying but I still dont know the best way to go??? Anyway here is the piks. Hope it makes sence. Many cheers

TOMT, hi again,

You have done well with your screen shots, and the posting of them....I usually ask for them when all else fails, but this time I forgot...sorry.

As I see it following the SIW information

  • The capacity of the computer is 4GB RAM
  • Currently you have two slots with 512MB in each = 1024MB
  • Please follow Troy's post #9 to upgrade if desired, and
  • Digerati's post #14 for excellent information
  • Paws post #4 is also critical to you decision
Reading the entire thread once again, how is your computer performing now? do you really need to upgrade?

Keep us posted,

best regards,

 Hi guys, Well I have looked thru all the info you guys have given me. And as always I have managed to learn a few things along the way, which to me is a great help. I have decided to go with some " Crucial 2x 1GB kit of PC-3200 DDR (400MHz) RAM / kit part No: CT2KIT12864Z0B" and going by the Crucial site, this kit is recomended for my motherboard. I will keep you informed when I get this done. 2-3 week delay for stock....... Oh Tallin, my pc is running pretty good now, it is fast, unless I have a few diff programs running... I,m going to slowly upgrade a few items on her and this is the start. Again many thanks for your help!!!!!

Hi TOMT,

Thanks for the feed back and I am glad to see you are pushing forward with a decision to upgrade if that is what you really feel you need to do.

Re the slowness when you have a few different programs open, what have you got in your startup folder that maybe is slowing you down?

How may processes have you got running?

  • Hold down Ctrl/Alt/delete all at the same time
  • When Task Manager opens, click the Process tab
  • How many processes are running?
kind regards,

Hi TOMT,

45 processes running is a bit high for my liking, but of course it depends on so many factors. Here is a wonderful program Quick Access that will help you to learn all about your running processes and whether to disable them or not. Before you download it if you decide to, read all about it on the link given as that way you are in front from the start and know just what you are about to accomplish.

Another issue that could be slowing you down is your Start and Services enabled at startup.

You can check these by going to
  • Start
  • Run
  • Type 'msconfig' without the quote
  • OK
  • Startup tab
I have four enabled there only.

  • Now click on Services tab
  • Enable 'Hide all Microsoft Services'
  • Top Right click on Status
  • Those with the tick in the box are all starting when you boot up
  • Click OK twice (in my case) and Exit without Restart. Some configurations you only have to click OK once then Exit without Restart
To look at your Services Automatic/Manual or Disabled go to

  • Right Click My Computer
  • Manage
  • In the left pane, double click on Services and Applications
  • Right Pane double click on Services
  • Reposition the Services box to the left of your desktop then drag the lower right corner so the screen is bigger to view
  • Click Startup Type second from the top right > once
  • View, Automatic, Disabled and Manual by scrolling down to the bottom
  • To exit > go to File then Exit up the top on the left
These are all your Services that are either starting at bootup, disabled, or work manually when you require them. Many systems have far too many Services on automatic that slows down their systems performance.

If you would like to learn more, post back as I can take you slowly, and further into slimming down your system to work faster for you if in fact you have too many Services running at startup.

You are good at Screen shots, so you can send me some if you want to continue with the above suggestions.

Best regards,

Hi Tallin, I had a look at the bits you mentioned, and have enclosed some shots from them. There is 2 of each as I could not expand the window.... so scrolled down. As for looking at " My Computer - Manage" etc, there was no Manage there??? shot enclosed too. I'm all for slimming down, and its a good learning curve. My PC is good at start up, well it only takes @1minute. But if you think that its worth doing more cool. 1 prob I do keep having is with playing video, watching video off net.... it is jumpy? and sound is there, then not, even when just listening to music ???? I have tried updating software and drivers but doesn't help. I have done video card checks, sound checks and they all come back OK.... One reason I was looking at upgrading a few items......

TOMT,

Referring to my last post, did you download and install Quick Access? If you did, you will see when you activate your Task Manager you have a blue information icon next to all your running processes. Once you click on any of these icons a Process Library opens and gives you information about the process.

Here is a direct link to Process Library where you can research each process running on your computer making decisions as to whether they are needed at start up.

Referring to the absence of Manage in the second part of my previous post. To view your services an alternative way to access them is
  • Start
  • Run
  • type 'services.msc' without the quote
  • Click OK
Then follow my previous directions for expanding the box for easier viewing.

Please note the Systems Configuration Utility is not able to be expanded as in the screenshots you sent. If you read again my last post I have explained that the Services Utility is the one that can be expanded.

Once you access the Services Utility by following the above four suggestions, you can highlight any of them, then

  • Right Click
  • Choose Properties
  • Click the drop down menu
  • Change to Auto, Manual or Disable
Note in the left pane when you highlight anyone of them you are given an explanation what they do.

You need to keep notes of any changes you make as after rebooting if your computer is not to your liking you can go back and enable whatever you disabled earlier. This is trial and error really and it took me some time to get my configuration loading without the bloat that I see in your Services tab via your screen shots sent earlier.

Here is a link to help with your Startup items. These decisions to change anything are yours to make, I can only give you the links to assist you in deciding what you want to change.

Have a good read, do not try to do this quickly, as it takes time to slim down your system.

Post back if you need more assistance.

Best regards,

:smack: Have now downloaded the " Quick Access" and have had a quick look at the proccess,s that are running. Yes I see that by clicking the Green icon as in my case, a full exsplanation from the Proccess library of what this does and if it is needed. I ran out of time before heading to work to try and find " manage" in services, I will look futher when home to night. Also is there a link you can give me to see if my sound/video is OK ? Cheers

TOMT,

I ran out of time before heading to work to try and find " manage" in services,

Tom, you are not looking for 'Manage' in 'Services'. Please read my posts more slowly and take all points I make IN when you are not in a hurry.

I gave you a new way in my second post to access Services as you could not find Manage when you followed the first instructions by right clicking on My Computer.

Also is there a link you can give me to see if my sound/video is OK ?

Go here
  • Start
  • Run
  • type 'dxdiag' without the quote
  • OK
  • Let it check for WHOL digital signatures lower left
  • Click "Next Page" and watch for Notes at the bottom each time you progress along
Remember, don't hurry with any of these suggestions, it all takes time to configure a system to your liking. All of the work has to be done by you now, and I will say, that when you have progressed along you will understand your computer so much better and can join me in answering posts here on WTT.

Post again if need be.

kind regards,

Hi Tallin,

""I gave you a new way in my second post to access Services as you could not find Manage when you followed the first instructions by right clicking on My Computer.""

Now reading your latest post, I see were I went wrong..... Right click 'My Computer'. I was just left clicking as in post 23 . I am never in a rush with the things you guys ask me to do, I admit sometimes that I may not fully take in what I,m reading, the perils of being a shift worker and up far to many hours..... But I never make a change/alter my system unless i,m sure of what I have read. I,m sorry for frustrating you

I see that I have a lot of services,s that are automatic, upon right clicking the item, I see they can be set to manual, I realize that certain items will always have to be in auto.
But if you turn an item such as 'Fax' (which is first in the list) to manual, Does this mean that if I use the Fax this will then start up? and 'status' will be running? or will the fax not function?
This is all very interesting.....

I have also done the WHOL check, and there were no error messages in any of the pages. So i,m still at a lost on the sound/vid issue.

So here are the shots of what you asked way back........ :smack:

Cheers.

TOMT, :)

My apologies, my instructions were not clear in post # 23 regarding accessing Manage. Please take another look as I have corrected my mistake and put it in red. Now you have two ways of accessing your Services so we learn all the time.

You are certainly not frustrating me, we all have a need to learn, and being cautious is the best way to go.

Referring to the above quote. If you use the fax all the time, leave it on Automatic, if only occasionally, enable it to Manual, if not at all Disable it. Another way is Disable it, remember/note what you do and when you want to use the fax, change to Automatic, reboot and send your fax.

If you want to quote to me what I say, please do the following
  • highlight the text you want to send to me
  • Above where you are typing your reply, run your cursor over the icons until you find "wrap in quote tags". with the text still highlighted, click that tab which will quote the text in your reply.

I have also done the WHOL check, and there were no error messages in any of the pages. So i,m still at a lost on the sound/vid issue.

Relate to me again what is wrong with your sound/Vid as I went back through your post and could not find where you related any problems with sound or Video, I guess you mean....it is better that you do not abbreviate as it makes the understanding of your post a little harder to completely grasp when giving a reply. I say this as we have members from countries all over the world, some can barely write English, so we encourage them not to abbreviate as it makes the job harder.

On your screen shots which by the way are very good, click the Name tab to get the Services into alphabetical order, then the Status tab to put Automatic group first, then Disable, the Manual.

Do remember:

  • if you change anything, write it down.
  • If you change to Manual from Automatic, reboot after all changes,
  • also note the left pane as you need to Start the Service if changing from Disable to either of the others (Automatic or Manual)
Hasten slowly, ask any questions you like as we are here to help you learn.

kind regards,

Hi Tallin, OK about the abbreviation bit.... I am slowly looking at all the info that is now there, mind boggling tho lolololol ! there are a lot of services that are required for programs that are on my PC. Is this normal?? I also ran the 'Uniblue SpeedupMyPC' (form the Process Library Link) and this said that there were many tweaks that could be done? I did not register a copy, just did the scan and had a look at the files it mentioned. Many were in the Task Manager Process, but there were hundreds of secret files??? what are these?? and 10-15 windows tweaks. I have run programs like this before discovering this forum, and my PC did not like what they did at all!! I would rather do as you have suggested to me! Also the sound/video thing is an issue I have had for a while, sometimes it isn't a problem, but then some days it is. Upon watching Task Manager (as I have this up a lot now to see what is running  ) I have noticed that when I have the performance pane up and watching CPU Usage, that when the sound/video starts to get 'Glitchy' my CPU is hitting 90-100%. As soon as I close the video, CPU drops back down to 0%. Could there be an issue with my CPU??? I am finding all this new information interesting, I have not made any changes as of yet, I will wait till I am on days off, and have a clear head and plenty of time....
