Do you have a friend who has a Windows Home CD at SP2 level? If so, can you borrow it and use it to complete sfc?

It's also possible your on board network connection has gone bad. There are a couple ways I can think of to check this.

One is to download and create a Linux Live CD like Puppy Linux. See the instructions here for where to get it and how to create the CD: http://www.geekstogo...21#entry1197721

Another is UBCD4WIN through I'm not sure that will work with a Dell Recovery CD/DVD, though I do remember seeing some posts about how to do so. Direction's here on how to build it: http://www.ubcd4win.com/howto.htm

Hmm, seems to me the Dell Recovery CD supports two recovery methods, Repair (install over existing XP without format, which is the default) and Clean (you select Advanced and this formats the drive first so you need to save all your data before doing this). If so, you could also try a Repair install. What is the model number of your XPS laptop? The Users Guide should tell you how to use the recovery disc and the options available.

Hello Dr Bonz,

I have read through your saga of problems and I am sorry you are having such stress with your Laptop.

The Techies that have been helping you are the very best here on WTT, but sometimes it is time for 'a hands on' when you have tried so many different fixes.

I read you are a Physician, so you surely would be in a good city to seek out a reliable IT shop where one of the techies there could look at your Laptop and advise what they can do to fix it. That is what I do with my computers when certain items become past my level of expertise.

Only a suggestion....... we here at WTT do not like sending you off to IT shops, but in this case I think as I said it is for your sanity in the end. I am sure you need your Laptop urgently so that would be my advice to you.

Good luck and keep us posted.

If and when you do call in a techie from your chosen IT shop, you can draw his attention to this thread and what has been suggested so far........doing that will save you cost with the techie in the end.

kind regards,

Paws mentioned being able to create a SP3 or SP2 disc and he/she (sorry don't know your gender Paws), gave a link. Is this still an option and if so, can you give me more detail on how to do it?

Hi Yes,
just follow the directions to be found in the link I provided previously, alternatively a step by step can be found here
http://www.nliteos.c...uide/part1.html
If you are short of time (as most folks seem to be!) and you need to run SFC then just ask around your chums to see who has a Microsoft XP Installation disc, someone is bound to have one lying around. Just be sure that its the correct version for your operating system. For the purposes of running SFc its quite OK to borrow a disc and by so doing you will not infinge any licensing rules etc.
Please note the disc you referrred to earlier is NOT the Microsoft XP installation disc that I was referring to........... Its the Microsoft disc you need not, the manufacturers restore disc.....that is quite a different beast!

PS gender........I was brought up as a German Shepherd, but sometimes I look like a labrador....

Thanks. I still need to look for that darn Windows disc. I was so relieved when I found the one I found only to see now that it isn't the one I need. I will see what happens as far as getting one. I have two other computers and I have to have one sitting around somewhere. If not, I will try the step by step to make one. Glad you are a "dog person". As I type this, my German Shepherd (Rocky) and my Great Dane (Adrian) are playing together about ten feet away. :) As always, thanks again for all of your help!

Hi Raycy1,

:welcome:

We are glad to see you here, perhaps you can contribute as a volunteer like we do?

Hi I notice that no one has suggested using XP's built in restore system

Yes they have, post # 12 link.

I must comment that SP3 has not

"sucked the life out of my computers"

SP3 did not do that to my computers.

Hope you enjoy your time here, there is much to read and learn.

kind regards,

Reason for edit, omitted my comment on SP3.

Thanks Tallin, sorry missed that bit about system restore posted earlier, just a thought , but could either the firewall or antivirus have set itself to a different profile beings as this lap top was introduced to a hotel network, if you think possiblity i will leave it to you to advise the good doctor as to how to knock down the firewalls and stop antivirus to see if it makes a difference .

No, I am still here. I was of town for a week and then when I returned, so did Hurricane Ike. As it made it's way north up to western PA, we had some really big wind storms with gusts up to 60 MPH. TONS of trees down and therefore power lines with them. We had NO ELECTRICITY for the last 6 days! I am now back and hope to be able to work the problem again. As we left it, I think I need to get ahold of a Windows SP2 recovery disk? Also, I believe it was Paws who suggested a web site where I could make one. Could you please go over that again. It's been a long time. Thanks. As for Raycy1's suggestion about the firewall and my antivirus stuff, what would I need to do there? Again, thanks so much for all your help everyone!

Good Morning Doctor,

I would read back over all the posts in this thread, make sure you follow what has been suggested to you to help you fix your problem. All the information is there for reading if you scroll back.

As for Raycy1's suggestion about the firewall and my antivirus stuff, what would I need to do there?

Raycy1's suggestion would be to right click on your Firewall and Antivirus in your systems tray near the clock to disable them Before attempting to install SP3.

I am sorry you have had a bad time during the Hurricane, we are lucky here in Australia, no Hurricanes, but the odd Cyclone in Northern Queensland, miles and miles north of where I am.

After catching up on help already provided, if you have more questions, please don't hesitate to get in touch.

kind regards,
