Hi, OK I understand. Lets try and narrow it down a bit further: Open a command prompt and ping the bbc and let me know the results: 1 Click Start 2 Click Run 3 type in the white box cmd 4 hit the Enter key in the black DOS like window and at the blinking prompt, type: ping bbc.co.uk 5 hit the Enter key Let me know the output please. (Please note the space after the g and before the b is essential...if your firewall is on, allow the ping) 6 Now try and ping eircom.net, the syntax is ping home.eircom.net hit the enter key and let me know the output. 7 Next Enable your Secure Socket Layer (SSL) In Internet Explorer, choose Internet Options... from the Tools menu. Click on the Advanced tab. A scroll window is displayed. Scroll down to 'Security'. Select the SSL 2.0 and SSL 3.0 tickboxes/checkboxes. Close Internet Explorer. Now delete internet file cache and cookies Choose Settings from the Start menu, then select Control Panel. Double-click Internet Options. The Internet Options dialog box is displayed with General tab selected. Click the Delete Files... button. The Delete Files dialog box is displayed. Select the Delete all offline content tickbox/check box and click OK. There may be a delay as this operation takes some time to complete. Click Delete Cookies... A confirmation dialog box is displayed. Click OK if you want to go ahead. After a short wait, the cookies are deleted. Please note: If you use online banking or are registered online with any other organisations, ensure you have memorised password and other personal information as removing cookies will temporarily disable the auto-login facility. Ensure that your firewall is configured correctly, (These notes courtesy of BT) its OK to disable it(your firewall for a minute whilst testing...but not for very long... 8 Next In your browser (IE please) type in at the address bar: 212.58.251.195 and hit the Enter key 9 Do you arrive at the BBC's website? Don't give up....we will get it nailed, before we start checking the hardware I need to be reasonably sure the software is OK. Regards paws

Paws, No luck yet I'm afraid... ping bbc.co.uk gave me the error message 'ping request could not find host bbc.co.uk' I got the same kind of message when trying to ping eircom The SSL 2.0 and SSL 3.0 boxes were already checked in IE/Internet Options I deleted the file cache and cookies I disabled the firewall and typed the IP address you gave me in the IE browser, but it didn't take me to the BBC website - I just got an error message saying "IE could not open the search page" Brian

Hi Brian, Ok I understand. Before we go to looking at the hardware can you please do the following: 1 Check again all your configuration settings are as I recommended. 2 Check that your modem Speedtouch is directly connected to the BT socket outlet and this is the master socket, I.e. the first one in th house connected to the external BT wire (its important that you do not connect to an extension of any sort. (move the computer if necessary!) 3 If your BT socket has a removable faceplate with a single socket below it then plug the Speedtouch directly into this socket. 4 Be sure that you have in place a filter/splitter in every telephone socket including those for set top boxes burglar alarms, extensions, fax machines etc. 5 Now do this: Click on Start Click on Control panel Click on Network connections your BT broadband should be the only one that says connected..if it is disconnected then right click on it and select Connect. You should now get a dial up box....... Can you copy me with the connections that are shown under network connections and their status please? Regards paws

Paws,
I followed the instructions in your last post and the connections shown in Network Connections are as follows :

Dial-up

BT Openworld Broadband Dial-Up Connected SpeedTouch

LAN or High-Speed Internet

Local Area Connection LAN or High-Speed Internet Network cable unplugged Broadcom 44

I was going to include the actual screenshot, but I'm not sure how to do that in a post.

Brian

Hi Brian, You should get a dial up box open and then it should be plane sailing.......however I think we have some way to go yet...... Do check that in Control Panel>Internet Options>Connections that your BT broadband connection is still highlighted and "Always dial .....is selected click Apply then Ok your way out If you don't get a dial up box then let me know, and also open IE and if you get "server" not found error or webpage unavailable then click on the "diagnostic". follow the directions and copy back the output in your next reply. Regards and good luck paws

Sorry paws, I think I hadn't completely woken up when I posted earier! Yes, I do get a dial-up box and I am able to connect to BT Openworld...or at least that's what my computer tells me. Then when I open either browser, I just get the 'server not found' messages. Didn't know about clicking on diagnostic...I'll do that and get back to you with the output Brian

Hi Ok, When you get the dial up box open..please also click on settings and tell me what you see? I just want to check that nothing has "slipped" (Make sure firewall and AV is off/disabled) Also can you download a fresh copy of Firefox on your work machine and save it to a memory stick and then reinstall Firefox on your home machine?
