Hi, here is some more information: I tried again to paste info from Yahoo to Microsoft Word thinking it would work since I uninstlaled IE7 and I got the same error report. This time I got the following info from the webpage Microsoft Windows Error Reporting: "This problem was caused by Microsoft Office System Software. We've detected that an update is available for your Microsoft Office System product. This cumulative update fixes many of the errors customers have reported to us through the error reporting system. NOTE: Detection shows that Office products on your computer have been updated by your Office product administrator from the administrative installation point on a server. This means that you should not update Office products yourself. ** If you are an Office product administrator, please visit the Office Resource Kit for more information." When I tried to do the update myself I got this message in a box called Microsoft Office XP Proffessional with FrontPage: "The feature you are trying to use is on a network resource that is unavailable. click Ok to try agaign, or enter an alternate path to a folder containing the installation package 'PROPLUS.MSI' in the box below." (and when i clicked ok I got this): The file "is not a valid installation package for the product MS Office XP Professional with FrontPage. Try to find the installation package 'PROPLUS.MSI' in a folder from which you caln installl Microsoft Office XP Professional with FrontPage." I dont understand any of this. I dont know why I can't update the Office myself. I hope this info helps

Hi Safira

Regarding what is a missed packet...

(Taken from compnetworking)
A packet is one unit of binary data capable of being routed through a computer network. To improve communication performance and reliability, each message sent between two network devices is often subdivided into packets by the underlying hardware and software.

More informaiton available here-> http://compnetworkin...ldef_packet.htm

The only thing that is flagged in the PC Pitstop test is to increase your browser cache.

Start Internet Explorer
Select Tools | Internet Options | General
Under Temporary Internet Files click the Settings button.
In the box for the amount of disk space to use, enter a value between 10 and 100 megabytes.
Click OK to accept the changes.

I notice that the upload test was not tested, however on a dial up connection I would not worry about this as I do not think you will be uploading terabytes of files!

As to IE7 - In this case you may be just as wise to listen to doug's quote - As to IE 7.0 -- Who needs it?!
If you reverted back to IE6 then you could set the updates to the Notify but do not download them , option, then (if my memory serves me right) you will get an option about the download/installation of them - choose custom, take the check out of any for IE7 then tell it not to ask you again.

Regarding the copy and paste problem - Thres not too much that I can find out form this either myself, Do you have the original instalation disk for Microsoft. If so I would be tempted to unsintall office then re-install again

Thanks, Hammer for reading the pcpitstop results and the link :) I adjusted the megabyte setting I guess for now I'll stick to IE6 and I've set my updates to Notify but do not download them (updates) I tried accessing my Yahoo account through the Aol browser thinking Id be able to copy/paste from there onto MIcrosoft Word but it still did not and the same error message came up :( "Detection shows that Office products on your computer have been updated by your Office product administrator from the administrative installation point on a server." **** Do you know what they mean by administrator? Unfortunately, I do not have the installation disk for MIcrosoft ; ( Do you know where on TC would be the best section to ask for help w/this MIcrosoft Office Update trouble? bbfn, Safira

Hi Dough, The computer I have is an old, used custom-built one an individual (not me) put together. I had no knowledge of any of the programs or their history when I received this one. To my surprise, I found out this summer that I did not have an authentic copy of Windows XP (it was a volume license key) when it woudlnt let me get updates off the microsoft site , so I wanted to make it legit and purchased a windows genuine advantage kit for about $160! I didnt even know I had office on there as I dont use office but use MIcrosoft Word all the time and don't understand why it won't let me download that update. bbfn, Safira

Much like the "volume license" situation you have previously dealt with, your copy of Microsoft Office may have been "deployed" from a networked server, and thereby subject to "group policies" and "password authentication" that may not exist on your machine, because they probably exist on the networked server from which XP and Office was initially "pirated".

I do remember the distress that you had to deal with upon discovering that your machine's XP operating system was not authentic. Looks like a similar situation with Microsoft Office.

Unfortunately, Office can be even more expensive than XP.

You might want to consider the open-source applications known as Open Office.
They are free to download and use. They are legal. They are compatible and "interact" well with MS Office applications pretty well. For instance, Open Office can create and display files nearly identical to Excell, Word, Access and PowerPoint.

Thanks for replying ; ) Oh no, I didnt think about having this same trouble w/M. Office :( Wow, it is expensive! Come to think of it, Id had no trouble w/Microsoft Word (and getting updates) till around last summer when Microsoft cracked down. I wonder if this had anything to do w/my IE7 troubles? If the root of this Microsoft Word trouble (not being able to paste any data from My Yahoo) is from not having an authentic copy of Microsoft Office than how come I can copy/paste to M. Word from other sites using Aol like this one and pcpitstop? If I download Open Office does that mean I'll be able to use it just like MIcrosoft Word? I've never used MIcrosoft Office and dont understand the difference between that and M. Word. I dont understand how not being able to get that Microsoft Office update makes MIcrosoft Word not be able to paste from Yahoo. Thanks for putting up w/all my questions! ;)

Microsoft Word is one of the component applications included in Microsoft Office. (Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, Publisher) My experience tells me that if MS Office is on a machine, it will "work" but if additional elements (upgrade/update/feature) were not originally installed, and now are needed, the user would then need the Installation CD with Product ID, or an authenticated method to download. For instance, I recently was working with some documents that an author had created in WordPerfect (file.wps) My Microsoft Word alerted me that I could not open the files because a "feature" had not been installed......... Do you want to install now? So I popped my Microsoft Office Installatin CD into the CD-ROM tray and allowed that feature to be installed. You may alos have come up against a specific situation in which Word needs an additional "feature" in order to perform the function that you are attempting. ___________ I've not used Open Office much myself, since I do have the Microsoft product. Others have reported being quite happy with Open Office and finding that it is relatively "full-featured". I can only suggest that you give it a try. Best Regards

Thank you for explaining what you know about Office/Word. Yeah, maybe Word needs an additional "feature" since it will paste from this site and others but not Yahoo ;( The download for Open Office on my dialup is about 9 hours!! So im going to try to start it now (fingers crossed) Best Regards Safira

Oh man, that download to Open Office was 13 hours!! And, as luck would have it, as it was almost done, the connection w/Aol went out :( it said "Your modem stopped responding" Then, a box appeared saying: NSIS Error “The installer you are trying to use is corrupted or incomplete. This could be the result of a damaged disk, a failed download or a virus. You may want to contact the author of this installer to obtain a new copy. It may be possible to skip this check using the /NCRC command line switch (Not Recommended) What does the above mean? I thought about ordering a cd from Open Office, but the print is so tiny on the site I coudnt read it. I used Aol Autofix to fix the internet connection. I don't know why i lost the connection then, all I was doing was typing on m. word. Please help, Safira

Oh Safira. What a bummer! The lost connection of AOL probably caused the "corrupted file" problem. Perhaps you can try again during an "overnight" period. I wish I had an "easy" and "quick" suggestion. Best Regards

Hi, yes, what a bummer! Im thinking it may be another exercise in futility to try to download it again as the connection w/aol will probably just go out again. Do you know a good way to not lose that aol connection? (i tried last time an overnight one but got online near the end of it as I figured being offline would cause the connection to go out). A long-distance friend offered to try to put OPen OFfice (they have dsl) on cd and mail it to me but Open Office has taken that download temp off the site because they are about to put up a more recent version of the software but apparently they dont say how soon/long that will be :( That same person recommened I try using Microsoft's Notepad in the interim until i am able to, hopefully, get the Open Office. I had an appt for Microsoft to call me and ...they did not call :( Do you think maybe the new version of IE7 is not compatible w/my illegit version of M. OFfice/Word becuase I wasnt able to get that update? I don't understand how I was able to all this time get updates for M. Office/Word since it wasnt a genuine copy, or maybe I did till this summer. What do you recommend I say to MIcrosoft when they do eventually call? Thanks for reading, Safira

Hi, I've been slowly trying to download the updates individually (the ones that Hammer posted in post #4) that had previously been uninstalled when I uninstalled the IE7. so far ive been able to downlaod /install 2, but I tried to download the security update fo Outlook Express for /Windows XP (KB923694) and an Aol Security Warning box popped up saying: Name: Windows XP –KB923694 –x86-ENU.exe Publisher: Unknown Publisher This file was blocked because it does not have a valid digital signature that verifies its publisher. :( I dont know why this update was blocked. ill tell microsoft if they ever call back.

Safira,

You are quite well protected with your Panda Product. In addition, your excellent Spybot Search & Destroy, and Ad-aware SE provide competent manual scanning antispyware.

I do "not" believe that your "security" is "improved with the addition of your AOL content and package.
If you are able to uninstall or disable the cluster of AOL's Security add-ons, you'll probably have better internet performance.

Uninstall AOL Safety and Security Center or One of Its Components
The AOL Safety and Security Center software is a suite of programs designed to address all of your security needs. The AOL Safety and Security Center software suite includes the following software components:

AOL® Virus Protection
AOL® Firewall
AOL® Spyware Protection
To remove AOL Firewall (or AOL® Privacy Wall™), AOL Spyware Protection, AOL Virus Protection, or the entire AOL Safety and Security Center Suite using Windows® XP:
1. Click the Start button, then click Control Panel.
2. Click the Add or Remove Programs icon.
3. Click AOL Uninstaller once to select it, then click the Change/Remove button.

Using Windows Security Center - Re-enable your Windows XP Firewall

Once you have connected to the internet via AOL connectivity, you should be able to minimize your AOL portal window, open another browser, for instance Internet Explorer or Firefox.

Try the downloads for Open Office using Internet Explorer.

------------------------

An item that we have not addressed, is your JAVA Runtime Environment, which is terribly out of date.
Go here to download the Offline installation:
Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 (build 1.6.0-b105)
The Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications.

The item you need: Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 (build 1.6.0-b105)
is about half way down that page,
Download and save the Offline Installation for Windows.

Once you have that item downloaded and saved, don't install it yet.

Instead, go to your Control Panel - Add/Remove
Uninstall all items related to having the word JAVA in its name (all of them)
Then navigate to: C:\Program Files\(any item and folder with the name JAVA in it)
DELETE any item and Folder related to JAVA

Next:
You can now make a fresh installation of the updated JAVA RunTime Environment
(this is an important thing to do, since the older versions that you have on your machine have vulnerablilities that put your machine at risk) The new version patches those vulnerabilities.

Thanks for your reply, Dough. I know this isnt fun for you, either, so I appreciate your help. I believe that too, that aol doesn’t add to my security. I didn’t know that I had any aol “addons”. I checked under the Add/remove programs (thanks for the instructions) and I could not find any aol security center components. I do not have the aol privacy wall or AV. Now, aol annoyingly runs this spyware check everytime I log on but I could not find it at all listed in add/remove. What I did find was: “Aol (choose which version to remove) Used: frequently. Last used on: 10/30/03” (I don’t understand this as I use aol every time to get online) And “Aol Coach version 1.0 (Build:20040229.1 en)” (I don’t know what this is ) so I did Not remove these. I was hoping id be able to find and delete something as those Aol Security Warning boxes are troubling. The Firewall I have been using is my Panda one as I read on TC that they didn’t recommend the Microsoft Windows one. Should I keep using my Panda Firewall since I’ve paid for a year of Panda? The only way I know to open another browser is to click on Start and click on IE. When I do that, I’m still getting “Cannot find server- Microsoft Internet Explorer” The page you are looking for is currently unavailable. The Web site might be experiencing technical difficulties, or you may need to adjust your browser settings.” Clicking refresh doesn’t do anything and its not a spelling error. It says to check connection settings to match those provided by the LAN or ISP. I don’t understand why I’m still getting that “Cannot find server” error message on IE as I Uninstalled the IE7.0  I didn’t have a problem w/IE6 before that IE7 update and my installing/uninstalling it. I have decided to buy Open Office from Amazon. Thank you much for letting me know that my Java RE was very out of date! I had no idea. I clicked on your posted Java link and then clicked on Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 it took me to a page that said Java™ SE Runtime Environment 6 The platforms listed for Windows are: Windows Platform - Java™ SE Runtime Environment 6 Windows Offline Installation, Multi-language jre-6-windows-i586.exe 12.56 MB Windows Online Installation, Multi-language jre-6-windows-i586-iftw.exe 361.63 KB But I could not find the exact one you said to use: Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 (build 1.6.0-b105) there. Did I do something wrong? Please let me know which of the two above to use. I don’t want to mess this up! You said to not install yet but to save it….where do I save it to, my desktop? A box on the Sun Downloads page said : “… Internet Explorer Users: Check the top of this page for a "Java™ Web Start ActiveX Control" message in the information bar. If it appears, click it to finish detecting your Java version. We were unable to detect a recent version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) on your system. With the latest JRE, you can automatically download, install, and run Sun Download Manager (SDM) directly from this page…..” I could not see any ActiveX Control message. Do you recommend I dodwnload and install the SDM so this Java download goes ok? I checked in my add/remove programs and here are the Java items I saw: Java Runtime Environment Standard Edition V 1.3 And Java RESE v1.4.1_03 And Java Webstart I have not deleted any of those yet as I don’t know if its safe to delete any of those old ones before I know which new Java file to download. Out of the 5 updates Hammer posted (post#4) ive been albe to download all except 2. when i tried the most recent one I got a box saying: "KB926247 Setup Error Setup cannot continue because one or more prerequisites required to install KB926247 failed. For more details check the Log File c:\windows\KB926247.log" I searched on google for the above log file and could not find it. I'll try to call Microsoft again today. I dont know what exactly to tell them as this is complicated. Over and out, Safira Om Mani Padme Hum
