In the last step under safe mode I was unable to delete C:\WINDOWS\sytem32\rpcc.dll because it was "being used by another user or program".

There's a couple of nasties that are being a bit stubborn!

Please download Killbox and save it to your desktop: http://www.killbox.n...ads/KillBox.exe

Double-click to start the program
Copy the following: C:\WINDOWS\system32\rpcc.dll
Paste this into the text box in Killbox
Click on the red button with the white 'X' on it (Delete File)
Click Exit

Run HijackThis and click Scan and then check (tick) the following:
O20 - Winlogon Notify: rpcc - C:\WINDOWS\system32\rpcc.dll

Close down all programs, browsers and other open windows. Make sure that only the above items are checked and then click on Fix checked.

Reboot your computer.

We now need to run FixWareout again. You may want to print out these instructions for reference, since you will have to restart your computer during the fix.

Run FixWareout. The fix will begin - follow the prompts. You will be asked to reboot your computer. Please do so (your system may take longer than usual to load - this is normal).

At the end of the fix, you may need to restart your computer again.

Now lets recheck some settings on your system.

Click on Start and then Control Panel.
If you are using Windows XP's Category View, select the Network and Internet Connections category otherwise double-click on Network Connections.
Then right-click on your default connection, usually Local Area Connection, and left-click on Properties. Click the Networking tab.
Double-click on the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) item and select the radio button that says Obtain DNS servers automatically.
Press OK twice to get out of the properties screen and reboot if it asks.

Next, click on Start, then Run, type cmd and click OK. A command prompt (black window) will open.
Type ipconfig /flushdns (that space between g and / is needed)
Hit the Enter key, type exit then hit Enter again.

Reboot your computer.

Hopefully, not for long!

The file's gone, so we should be able to get rid of the rest of it now.

Run HijackThis and click Scan and then check (tick) the following:

R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - {4D25F926-B9FE-4682-BF72-8AB8210D6D75} - (no file)
O20 - Winlogon Notify: rpcc - C:\WINDOWS\system32\rpcc.dll (file missing)

Close down all programs, browsers and other open windows. Make sure that only the above items are checked and then click on Fix checked.

You will need to reboot your computer into Safe Mode for the next steps. N.B. It would be a good idea for you to print these instructions, as you will not have access to the internet.

Important: If you have an 'always on' connection to the internet, physically disconnect that connection until you are finished with Safe Mode and have rebooted back into normal mode.

Boot to Safe Mode. To do this:

Restart your computer.
Continually tap the F8 button as your computer is booting (a menu appears).
Use up-arrow key to select Safe Mode and press Enter.

Click on Start then My Computer and find the following files and folders, shown highlighted in red. Delete any found but don't worry if they're missing.

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CSUBC.EXE <-- File only
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DMIBO.EXE<-- File only

Reboot into Normal Mode.

Please post a new HijackThis log.

Hello again and a continued thank you for your help. One question though please. When I reboot into the safe mode and look for the files CSUBC.EXE and DMIBO.EXE what if I find files exactly the same but without the EXE on the end. For instance would I delete "C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CSUBC"?

Those are the ones - you can delete them. The reason is that you have the extensions hidden (.exe)

Congratulations! It looks as if we've done it. The latest log looks clean, but I would like you to do an online scan just to make sure that there's nothing still lurking. I'm off to bed now (it's midnight here!) so I'll look at the logs in the morning.

Kaspersky Online Scanner

Using Internet Explorer, click on Kaspersky Online Scanner

You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click 'Yes'.
The program will launch and then start to download the latest definition files.
Once the scanner is installed and the definitions downloaded, click 'Next'.
Now click on 'Scan Settings'
In the scan settings make sure that the following are selected:
- Scan using the following Anti-Virus database: 'Extended' (If available, otherwise 'Standard')
- Scan Options: 'Scan Archives' and 'Scan Mail Bases'
Click 'OK'
Now under 'Select a target to scan' select 'My Computer'
The scan will take a while, so be patient and let it run. Once the scan is complete, it will display whether your system has been infected.
Now click on the 'Save as Text' button:
Save the file to your desktop.

The Kaspersky scan shows some more files that we need to delete.

First, let's run ATF Cleaner again.

Double-click the shortcut on your desktop to run the program.
Under Main, choose Select All
Untick Prefetch
Check that Java Cache is ticked
Click Empty Selected
If you use Firefox browser,
- Click Firefox at the top and choose Select All
- Click on Empty Selected
- NOTE: If you would like to keep any saved passwords, please untick that option.
Click Exit to close.
If you use Opera browser,
- Click Opera at the top and choose Select All
- Click on Empty Selected
- NOTE: If you would like to keep any saved passwords, please untick that option.
Click Exit to close.

You will need to reboot your computer into Safe Mode for the next steps. N.B. It would be a good idea for you to print these instructions, as you will not have access to the internet.

Important: If you have an 'always on' connection to the internet, physically disconnect that connection until you are finished with Safe Mode and have rebooted back into normal mode.

Boot to Safe Mode. To do this:

Restart your computer.
Continually tap the F8 button as your computer is booting (a menu appears).
Use up-arrow key to select Safe Mode and press Enter.

Click on Start then My Computer and find the following files, shown highlighted in red. Delete any found. Please let me know if any are missing, or if you are unable to delete them.

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\ctldlg32.dll <-- File only
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\dwjqddtl.exe <-- File only
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\qsubjapq.exe <-- File only

Then navigate to this folder:
C:\Documents and Settings\Rick\Application Data\Sun\Java\Deployment\cache\

Check that the folder is empty. If not, delete any files or folders that are present.

Reboot into normal mode.

Please run another Kaspesrky scan, to confirm that we've got everything:

Using Internet Explorer, click on Kaspersky Online Scanner

You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click 'Yes'.
The program will launch and then start to download the latest definition files.
Once the scanner is installed and the definitions downloaded, click 'Next'.
Now click on 'Scan Settings'
In the scan settings make sure that the following are selected:
- Scan using the following Anti-Virus database: 'Extended' (If available, otherwise 'Standard')
- Scan Options: 'Scan Archives' and 'Scan Mail Bases'
Click 'OK'
Now under 'Select a target to scan' select 'My Computer'
The scan will take a while, so be patient and let it run. Once the scan is complete, it will display whether your system has been infected.
Now click on the 'Save as Text' button:
Save the file to your desktop.

Please post the Kaspersky report and another HijackThis log.
