Dough, I managed to get the CD with the Service pack 2 from my friend who built the PC for me. I ran the sfc scan in about 14 minutes without any problems popping up. The progress bar window quit after the scan was over. Rebooted the PC four times in a row. The Blank window appeared the first and the last times. On the first occasion, the file path in the blank window was: c:\Windows\system32\xpob2res.dll. On the second, it was: c:\Windows\system32\main.cpl I then ran the sfc scan one more time. Like the first time, the progress bar window quit exactly after 14 minutes. The PC was then rebooted three times in a row and the blank window appeared all the three times. However, there were no file paths in any of them. Will await further instructions..... Thanks and regards Jay

Could you do this for me?

Important: Create a folder on the C: drive called C:\HJT.
You can do this by going to My Computer (Windows key+e) then double click on C: then right click and select New then Folder and name it HJT.
Download HijackThis into this folder.

Hi Jay, I've asked Micah to take a look at your thread, separately from the work we have been pursuing. In the event that he has recommendations for you, I will step aside until that work is complete, but will remain available if problems persist beyond your completion of work with Micah. In another matter, during your work with "Mike Lin's excellent startup utility" were any of the steps designed to cause faster boot-up by suspending the various registry and memory scans that typically occur at boot? I ask this because some of the .cpl "paths" refer to Keyboard and Mouse, both of which get polled at boot. Thanks for any answer you can recall. Doug

Dough, Appreciate you asking Micah to look into my problem. Two heads better than one! Mike Lin's utility is a very simple one and all I did with it, is to either enable or disable a program from starting up when the computer is booted up. There were no other steps involved. What does that program do?


CLOSE ALL WINDOWS (even this one) AND PROGRAMS!!!!

Run Hijack This!
Click "Do a systen scan only".
Then "check" the box to the left of these item(s):

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {702EA91C-1ACF-4772-8078-18F2B2EE1031} - (no file)

Then click "Fix checked" and close Hijack This!.

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new HijackThis! log file into this thread.

If your annoying window is still present, please do this:

Run Hijack This!.

Click on Open Misc Tools section

To the right of Generate Startuplist log, there are two boxes.

Check them both, then click Generate Startuplist log.

"Copy/paste" the startuplist log into this thread.

Actually, the utility that I used is called SysInternals AUTORUNS. From what I understood, this gives a complete picture from which you can enable or disable entries running automatically in the system.

I have Autoruns, but it's not an installed service.


You might post some of the things you've tried, that you can remember (as far as running malware checkers and the like), just so I don't suggest them again.

I assume your problem was already present before:

These services:

O23 - Service: Logitech Process Monitor (LVPrcSrv) - Logitech Inc. - c:\program files\common files\logitech\lvmvfm\LVPrcSrv.exe

O23 - Service: NBService - Nero AG - C:\Program Files\Nero\Nero 7\Nero BackItUp\NBService.exe

LVPrcSrv.exe is a process installed alongside Logitech QuickCam and provides additional configuration options for these devices. This program is non-essential process to the running of the system, but should not be terminated unless suspected to be causing problems.

Related to Nero Backup service. Note: Located in C:\Program Files\Nero\Nero 7\Nero BackItUp\

If your antivirus complains, tell it to allow this script.

When you run it, click "Yes" to the "Skip supplementary searches".

It will take a few minutes to run.

When it fininshes, it will tell you what text file it put the results in (it will be in the same folder the VBS file was downloaded into).

I'm sorry Micah, I'm lost! I clicked on the URL you gave me for the Silentrunner. Things happened so fast I do not know where the .vbs scrip downloaded and before I could figure that out, the script ran and a few windows opened. By the time I could try and comprehend what was going on, it was done and said it placed the file in the Startup Program (user - OFD9891CF5.. ?? I've no idea of how to go about accessing the file now! I guess I will have to repeat the process but need detailed instructions please! As to the question you had for me reg. Logitech's Webcam and Nero, the anwer is yes. Both the programs are installed and active. Thanks Jay
