Trying to avoid re-install Norton's.

Example: If the Liveupdate folder was here:
"c:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Symantec\Liveupdate"
and you renamed it LiveUpdate_OLD
go to:
c:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Symantec and create a new folder called Liveupdate

look at the files in the Liveupdate_OLD,
N.Log.LiveUpdate.liveupdate
N.Product.Catalog.liveupdate
N.Configuration.Log.LiveUpdate
N.Settings.Liveupdate

Where a digit from one to six is substituted for the letter "N" in my example.
pick the oldest ones of each name type, and copy into the NEW Liveupdate folder.
Then I rename the copies to eliminate the leading digit and period.

See if that works.

OK.

Lets delete the Liveupdate folder you created.
Once it's deleted, rename the original one back to Liveupdate like it was.

Now lets see if their fix works:

got me to this apge which says I have a 3rd party firewall - of course I do not know where - I thought my firewall was only from Norton

Configuring your firewall for use with Norton AntiVirus 2004 or 2005

Situation:

This page tells how to set up your non-Symantec firewall software program to work with Norton AntiVirus 2004 or Norton AntiVirus 2005.

Solution:
If you have Norton Internet Security or Norton Personal Firewall, these programs come preconfigured for use with Norton AntiVirus and other Symantec products.

For configuration information for your non-Symantec firewall, click the icon to the left of your product to either expand ( ) or collapse ( ) the section. (If you cannot open a section, then your Web browser does not let scripts run, or the Windows Script host is not working. Read Cannot expand sections in a Symantec Knowledge Base document for how to fix this. Come back to this page when you are finished.)

Windows XP Internet Connection Firewall (ICF) or Windows Firewall

Windows XP Internet Connection Firewall (ICF) or Windows Firewall
Following are the general steps to configure ICF or Windows Firewall.

Windows and Norton Internet Security and Norton Personal Firewall
If you have upgraded to Windows XP Service Pack 2, you will have Windows Firewall. If you also have Norton 2005 programs or the latest Norton 2004 program updates, and you choose to let Norton AntiVirus protect your computer, then Norton AntiVirus will be automatically configured to work with the firewall.

This is basic configuration information. For more detailed information, consult your user's manual or contact Microsoft technical support.

Follow these steps to manually configure ICF to run with Norton AntiVirus.

To configure ICF
Click Start > Control Panel.

Web Server (HTTP)

Restart the computer.

Windows Firewall
Follow these steps to manually configure Windows Firewall to run with Norton AntiVirus.

To configure Windows Firewall
Click Start > Control Panel.

The full list of Norton AntiVirus and Symantec shared program names is provided in the "Manual Configuration Information" section in Technical Information at the end of this document.

When finished, click Next until the dialog box with the Finish button appears, and then click Finish.

If this article is not what you are looking for
If the information on this page is not what you are looking for, look at the following topics for related information from Symantec.

Subscriptions
If you have any questions about your subscription, please read How to fix subscription problems.

Software problems
Did you reach this document because you have a problem with your Symantec or Norton brand software? In most cases, solutions are available in the Symantec Knowledge Base. Here is how to find an answer.

To run the AutoFix Tool
Go to the home & home office/small business Web site.
If you have not already done so, run the AutoFix Tool from the link near the top of the page. Follow all on-screen instructions. In many cases, you will receive an answer right there, or be given the option to send the information to Technical Support. If not, go on to step 3.
If the AutoFix Tool did not provide an answer, more help is provided on the home & home office/small business Web site. These are clickable links to information on fee-based phone support, and to top installation, subscription, rebate, and other information.

To search for your particular error message or problem
In the online support page, click access free online support.
Chose your product and version from the drop-downs and click continue.
Finally, in the "search the knowledge base" section, type at least part of the error message (an error number works best) or a phrase or a few words that best describe what you see.
To the right of the text you just typed, from the drop-down, select the phrase which best describes what you just typed.
Click search. If too many results--or no results--are found, click the back button on your Web browser and refine the search by typing different words or a different phrase.

Error messages
Did you reach this document because you see an error message when you use your product or run LiveUpdate? In most cases, solutions are available in the Symantec Knowledge Base. There are two ways find this information:

Clickable link in the message
If you are using a current Symantec or Norton brand product, when an error message appears, it may display a clickable link, which looks similar to this illustration:

If you then click the "Click here. . ." link, if a document that describes the problem exists, it will open in a Web browser window. If one does not, you will see a Web page with information on how to get help.

Search the Knowledge base
To search the Knowledge base, follow the instructions in the "Software problems" section that precedes this one.

Viruses, worms, Trojans, and Expanded Threats
If Norton AntiVirus detects a threat and you are using a current version of Norton AntiVirus, when the detected threat message appears, it may display a clickable link, which looks similar to the one descried in the previous section. If it does, just click the link for more information. If there is no link, or you are just looking for information on a threat, go to the Security Response Web site. If it is a current threat, there may be information on the main page. If not, go on to the search page, enter the name of the threat in the search box, and click search.

Click the resulting link or lines for specific information.

I'm not sure but I think you'll need to use Add/Remove programs and click to remove and then you should get the option to repair. If that doesn't work, use the disk to re-install

well I am getting no where fast. I uninstalled the old norton - installed the new one and the same thing basically happens - it keeps telling me I have a corrupted file for my anti virus file - I have tried to go to symantic site and fix this for the last hour but my computer keeps following the prompts by live update to restart and it gets us back to t he same place. Dazed and confused... A corrupted Settings.LiveUpdate file. This must be deleted if it is corrupted

When you uninstalled it were there any folders / files left behind? A lot of times it doesn't completely remove everything. Make sure everything is gone.

Or I can give you a link to the free one I use:

Click the link and Save, Install, Update and run a full scan.
