I checked to see if McAfee is up to date and it is. Also, you had asked if I have it set to scan files before downloading...I went all through McAfee just to make sure and if I am reading it right...the only thing that is scans before downloading is e-mail attachments and things of the sort.

The cpu is still running really slow on start up...partly because all the programs you had asked me to download are in the quick launch bar, which they will remain just in case. Here is a copy of HJT log as you requested.

I hope you had a good nights sleep and thanks you again for all your help. I saw that you gave me a :thumbup:

and I only hope that means that this will be taken care of soon and this is not too complicated of a problem for you to help me fix.

Log looking real good. We're not finished yet. Let me know how this goes.

lets see if this will help speed it up.

Backup your Registry...
- Press "CTRL - ALT - DEL" keys all at the same time to start "Task Manager"
- In the Task Manager window click on "File", then from the drop-down menu select "New Task (Run...)"
- In the "Create New Task" window enter\type "regedit" (without quotes)
- Once Regedit opens click on the FILE menu and select Export
- Save the file as backup. Save the file somewhere you will remember and not delete.
IMPORTANT: make sure to set the export range to ALL

I recommend you download RegSeeker. Extract it to it's own folder, open and double click RegSeeker.exe to start the program. Maximize the window and click clean registry. Check all sections and click OK. When the scan is complete, verify the backup box in lower left corner is checked and click the select all button, then select all again. Then right click within the search results and select delete. Run it again and again, deleting everything it finds until it finds nothing. Reboot and make sure your programs are working properly, control panel and add/remove programs windows open, etc (basically just do a quick check of everything). In the event anything was 'broken', you can open RegSeeker, click backups and double click any/all files to put the information back. A reboot may be required for the effects to be seen. Reboot When done.

NOTE: To be extra safe you can choose to only remove the items in RED.

OK...programs still take a long time to open up. Also, having some other problems as far as programs not wanting to open or reall bogged down to the point it tells me "'Program' not responding...End Now or Cancel". I went back into RegSeeker and it tells me: Cannot import C:/Documents and Settings/Jean-Marie/My Documents/RegSeeker/Backup/clean-4-2-2006-10.36.16AM.reg: Error accessing the registry. Was able to Backup the registry with the Task Manager just fine though. I am lost as to what to do now!

use add/remove programs and remove; ewido and spysweeper. see if that helps

OK...it helped speed up the cpu start up process. However, in an attemt to see if McAfee was enabled...the program never opened....I opened task manager to see the cpu usage and it was 0%- 2%. Don't know if that is a problem but I would think it would be important for my McAfee to be running accurately. All other programs at this seem to be working fine.

No...I do not have the CD to repair it with, I can however repair it via internet seeings how that is where I got it. I am an MSN Premium account holder, McAfee comes with that account. Also, in waiting for a reply from you (which wasn't long at all) I attempted to open McAfee again and it will not open at all. It is enabled along with the firewall but it won't let me open to anything...not even a scan if I wanted to. Also, in a previous post you had stated, "In the event anything was 'broken', you can open RegSeeker, click backups and double click any/all files to put the information back. A reboot may be required for the effects to be seen. Reboot When done.

NOTE: To be extra safe you can choose to only remove the items in RED."

So I did that...ran the scan again and deleted all the red...left all the green alone!

I would try to repair McAfee. Some of these infections disable you protection programs.

These are minor items that aren't needed.

Run hijackthis. Hit None of the above, Click Do a System Scan Only. Put a Check in the box on the left side on these:

Sorry it took so long to get back to you, takes a while for McAfee to reinstall. For your own info just in case someone esle asks you about how to repair McAfee from the website, they need to download the whole program all over again and install it. I am so glad I did that as well, there were quite a few options that I did not have before, including the actual McAfee Security Center which is running like it should be now.

Everything seems to running smoothly except it still takes a while to start up. I am not expecting it to take seconds but it does seem slower what it was.

Note: This will remove all previous Restore Points

Turn off System Restore:

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Restart your computer, turn it back on.

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Remove the Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Check "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, Uncheck "Show hidden files and folders."
Check "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Keep your system up to date and run Adaware & Spybot, once a week works, and hopefully you will be ok from here on. Both are available below.

Uh...there is another problem!!!! I did the System Restore thing...rebooted...turned the System Restore back on. Double clicked My Computer and it has been "searching" (flashlight icon moving back and forth) for about 2-3 mintues. Is that normal for that to do that after the Restore "refresh"?
