Ken545,

I'm not sure if i'm missing somthing here......

The only classic view i can find is if i right click on my start button and select properties, a window pops up with two tabs.....which are taskbar or start menu, i click the start menu and have two choices.....either Start Menu or Classic Start Menu. So i select classic thinking that this is what you mean for me to do.

It changes things slightly but essentialy no more options are presented to me.

I have done as you said as far as i am aware and before i posted this i double clicked the System icon within the control panel, i clicked the System restore tab but am not presented with an option to Create a New Restore Point. All i see is a check box to Turn Off System Restore. It also shows the status of the C drive as MONITORING .

Hope all that makes sense.

Cheers...........Stu :oops:

No, not this, this is for setting up options for your start menu.

Lets try this a little differntly, click on the Start Menu and then the Control Panel and then on the left hand side towards the top in the blue area you will see an option to change to CATEGORY VIEW , do so and the options will be there.

Sorry Stu, miss communication on my end, here are the instructions to turn on and off System Restore, but to create a Restore Point you need to be in Category View

TURN Off then TURN ON SYSTEM RESTORE

Everytime you start WINDOWS, SYSTEM RESTORE creates a restore point, or if you
manually create a restore point on your own, all WINDOWS files are backed up including any that
we just cleaned that were infected with Malware or a Virus. This is the only way to clean out these files.

(You will lose all PREVIOUS RESTORE POINTS which are likely to be infected)

Turn off System Restore.

* Right Click on MY COMPUTER
* Click on PROPERTIES
* Click on the SYSTEM RESTORE TAB
* Check TURN OFF SYSTEM RESTORE ON ALL DRIVES
* Click APPLY / OK

RE-BOOT YOUR COMPUTER

TURN ON SYSTEM RESTORE

* Right Click on MY COMPUTER
* Click on PROPERTIES
* Click on the SYSTEM RESTORE TAB
* UN-Check TURN OFF SYSTEM RESTORE ON ALL DRIVES
* Click APPLY / OK

Now create a new RESTORE POINT

Make sure you are in Category View.

* Go to Start/ Control Panel/ Performance and Maintenance/ System Restore/ Create a New Restore Point
You can name the restore point anything you like that you can remember

Hey Stu,

AVG Free Edition
AntVir Personal Edition

I just posted these because you cant believe the amount of people dont have any AV, but with AV software programs MORE IS NOT BETTER, so just stick to what you have.

* Win Patrol --(i have something similar from symantec, but haven't seen it operate for a while...what d'ya reckon)

I like this program because I use it for the startup items, but not needed if you use Norton.

* IE- Spyad --(does this cause conflict in any way?)

Nope , it wont conflict, all it does is put 1000s of bad sites in the restricted zone so they cant set cookies and downloads from them are blocked.

* Thunderbird Mail -- (not too worried about this as i only open mail if i know where its from----what d'ya reckon?)

Your call on this one, I like it better than Outlook Express , but just be careful what you open.

* Zone Alarm --- (will this interfere with my norton firewall?)

Yes it will, only one firewall is needed , if your running Nortons firewall, you should make sure the windows firewall is turned off. BUT, you can have one software firewall and a hardware firewall built into lets say a router.
Go to (here we go again Stu ) Start> Control Panel> Security Center> Windows firewall and make sure its turned off.

Glad everythings ok.

Ken :D
