I am sure I messed up outlook but I am not that worried about it I can run that cd again or something BUT I did notice that win media player popped up on its own as I was shutting down I guess it might be looking for updates and no norton has not given it permission to go out yet I keep blocking it untill this is done.

Lets look at what's in the startup. click Start> Run> type in Msconfig tap enter key. look in the Startup. List everything there that has a check next to it.

Lets see if one of the ones I marked in bold is causing the issue. Uncheck these. You can always re-check them.

A GREEN CHECK IN A BOX WITH NOTHING THERE IN THE STARTUP ITEM OR IN THE COMMAND THE LOCATION IS:

After you uncheck it and rebooting, you'll be using Selective startup.
When you see the box popup that tells you that, just put a Check in the Box to not show that when you startup. That's how I run mine.

I have checked the ones you told me too including the blank one I ran spy-bot and it came back clean at the presant I am running adaware (hoping it does the same) should I do another hjt and ewido? or what should my next step be? I haave not up to this point seen the little white "hell" box!

Note: This will remove all previous Restore Points

Turn off System Restore:

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Restart your computer, turn it back on.

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Remove the Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Click Start> My Computer, select the Tools menu and then Folder Options, after the new window appears select the View tab…]
This time select the: Restore Defaults
Select: Apply, and click OK




If you dont have these three programs I would recommend that you get them. Spywareblaster, Spywareguard and IESPY AD. They will add 1000's of sites to your resticted zone and block some hijacks from happening. I also have a FREE FIREWALL and FREE ANTI VIRUS if you need one.

It is critical to have both a firewall and anti virus to protect your system.

Keep your system up to date and run Adaware & Spybot, once a week works, and hopefully you will be ok from here on. Both are available below.

Thank you thank you thank you!!! You have done me a world of good and I am happy to show my appreciation!All seems good at this point I am aso going to include a new hjt log just for the info if it is needed. I do have some other questions for you and would like your advise on them as well. I have a linksys router, amodem from moterolla (running comcast) and I am currently running norton for virus stuff. (not sure if it has a firewall) I should be going back to McAfee soon. are there things you would recomend for me to do so I can stay more protected? If I did do anything wrong while deleteing the parts in the registry (and I am sure I did) what can I do to get those "good" files back on my computer w/out having to do a full reboot from cds or the partition? How do I stop wimdows messenger in the start up? I never use it and hate that it takes the time it does starting my computer. and would you recomend me turning on anything that was not on in the start up. Again, You have helped me a great deal and I am very pleased. My five day fight seems to be at an end and to me that is a miracle as is I did not loose my mind (much) and did not shoot my computer! so I do again thank you!!!

If I did do anything wrong while deleteing the parts in the registry (and I am sure I did) what can I do to get those "good" files back on my computer w/out having to do a full reboot from cds or the partition?

They must not have been critical or you would have killed the PC. If any programs like Outlook Express doesn't work, you ned to re-install it.

How do I stop wimdows messenger in the start up? I never use it and hate that it takes the time it does starting my computer. and would you recomend me turning on anything that was not on in the start up.

click Start> Run> type in Msconfig tap enter key.
look in the Startup. You can uncheck it there.

After you uncheck it and rebooting, you'll be using Selective startup.
When you see the box popup that tells you that, just put a Check in the Box to not show that when you startup. That's how I run mine.
