Just continue with the directions in my previous post. Did the Peper fix give you reports "No files found" ?

I tried to uninstall the Sony thing, once manually, once with the symantec tool. Symantec said the computer doesn't have this, although when I was reading the instructions from the site you sent me to, it had a way to tell if the root kit was on the computer, and I did see it listed. Manually said its not installed or not an installed file. I did run hiajck this again, just in case.

Hi jmoskus

That's very good news and is the information we were seeking, that the rootkit is not installed on your PC.

Now, lets see if we can finish up with that Peper infestation and a couple of other stubborn ones.

Please give special attention to the directions in RED, shown below.

Please set your system to show
all files; please see here if you're unsure how to do this.

Close all Windows leaving only HijackThis running.
Place a check against each of the following.:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ViewMgr] C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Viewpoint Manager\ViewMgr.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [2SWZKN82R5K47C] C:\WINNT\System32\VhkQi.exe
O23 - Service: Plug and Play Device Manager ($sys$DRMServer) - Unknown owner - C:\WINNT\system32\$sys$filesystem\$sys$DRMServer.exe (file missing)
O23 - Service: .NET Framework Service (.NET Connection Service) - Unknown owner - C:\WINNT\svchost.exe (file missing)

Click on Fix Checked when finished.

Reboot into Safe Mode: please see here if you are not sure how to do this.

Using Windows Explorer, locate the following files/folders shown DARK and delete them:

C:\Program Files\Viewpoint
C:\WINNT\System32\VhkQi.exe
C:\WINNT\system32\$sys$filesystem\$sys$DRMServer.exe
C:\WINNT\system32\$sys$filesystem\$sys$DRMServer.exe
If you were unable to find any of the files then please follow these additional instructions:

Download Pocket Killbox and unzip it; save it to your Desktop.

Run it, and click the radio button that says Delete a file on reboot. For each of the files you could not delete, paste them one at a time into the full path of file to delete box and click the red circle with a white cross in it.

Please Note: the entire line(s) must be placed in Killbox, beginning with C:\

The program will ask you if you want to reboot; say No each time until the last one has been pasted in whereupon you should answer Yes.

Let the system reboot.

Reboot , enable hidden files and post a fresh Hijack This log in this topic.

Please use the Post Reply feature to reply, so I will be notified.
The help you receive here is free. If you wish to show your appreciation, then you may donate to help keep us online.

Hi jmoskus

You nor Killbox could not find that file and now I don't see it either.
It has certainly been a stubborn one, but now it seems to be gone.

Hopefully we will not have to STOP SERVICES on the two below, in order to remove them. If we do, that's the next step.

We need to disable your Microsoft AntiSpyware Real-time Protection as it may interfere with the fixes that we need to make.

Open Microsoft AntiSpyware.
Click on Tools, Settings.
In the left pane, click on Real-time Protection.
Under Startup Options uncheck Enable the Microsoft AntiSpyware Security Agents on startup (recommended).
Under Real-time spyware threat protection uncheck Enable real-time spyware threat protection (recommended).
After you uncheck these, click on the Save button and close Microsoft AntiSpyware.
Right click on the Microsoft AntiSpyware icon on the taskbar and select Shutdown Microsoft AntiSpyware.
After all of the fixes are complete it is very important that you enable Real-time Protection again.

Close all Windows and browsers, leaving only HijackThis running.
Place a check against each of the following.:

O23 - Service: Plug and Play Device Manager ($sys$DRMServer) - Unknown owner - C:\WINNT\system32\$sys$filesystem\$sys$DRMServer.exe (file missing)
O23 - Service: .NET Framework Service (.NET Connection Service) - Unknown owner - C:\WINNT\svchost.exe (file missing)

Click on Fix Checked when finished.

Reboot , enable hidden files and post a fresh Hijack This log in this topic.

Please use the Post Reply feature to reply, so I will be notified.

Hi jmoskus, thanks for being patient.

Well, I guess we will just have to stop the service, before fixing with HJT.

The other one we can just leave. It's legitimate, but the file is missing.

First, Boot into Safe Mode:
Restart your computer and immediately begin tapping the F8 key on your keyboard.
If done right a Windows Advanced Options menu will appear. Select the Safe Mode option and press Enter.

To stop a service and set to 'disabled'
WXP ONLY

Go to Start > Run and type in Services.msc then click OK

Click the Extended tab.

Scroll down until you find the service. NET Framework Service (.NET Connection Service)

Click once on the service to highlight it.

Click Stop

Right-Click on the service. NET Framework Service (.NET Connection Service)

Click on 'Properties'

Select the 'General' tab

Click the Arrow-down tab on the right-hand side on the 'Start-up Type' box

From the drop-down menu, click on 'Disabled'

Click the 'Apply' tab, then click 'OK'

The service is now stopped and disabled.

Next:

Close all Windows leaving only HijackThis running.
Place a check against each of the following.:

O23 - Service: .NET Framework Service (.NET Connection Service) - Unknown owner - C:\WINNT\svchost.exe (file missing)

Click on Fix Checked when finished.

Then, please reboot and post a fresh Hijack This log in this topic.

Please use the Post Reply feature to reply, so I will be notified.

Patience is no problem, considering I was being advised to re-install my entire operating system, I much prefer this. And I think I'll have my computer better protected when we're done. Here's the Hijack This Log:

Hi jmoskus

What is really maddning, is to do a re-install and when finished have just as many problems as before. I've seen that happen too.

Your Hijack This log looks to be clean.

Just a few more things to do now and we are finished.

One of the best features of Windows XP is the System Restore option, however if Malware infects a computer with this operating system the Malware can be backed up in the System Restore folder. Therefore, clearing the restore points is necessary after a virus removal.

To reset your restore points, please note that you will need to log into your computer with an account which has full administrator access. You will know if the account has administrator access because you will be able to see the System Restore tab. If the tab is missing, you are logged in under a limited account.

(winXP)

1. Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Here are some tips, to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future, I strongly recommend installing the following applications:
  • Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
  • Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.

Download the new Ad-Aware SE version, and follow the instructions on how to do a full scan: http://forums.spywar...showtopic=11150
-reboot after using Ad-Aware SE. Also while there get the VX2 plugin and follow the instructions to run it also.
  • How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.
To protect yourself further:
  • MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
  • Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
I also suggest that you delete any files from "temp", "tmp" folders. In Internet Explorer, click on "Tools" => "Internet Options" => "Delete Files" and select the box that says "Delete All Offline Content" and click on "OK" twice. Also, empty the recycle bin by right clicking on it and selecting "Empty Recycle Bin". These steps should be done on a regular basis.

And also see TonyKlein's good advice
http://castlecops.co...tlite7736-.html
So how did I get infected in the first place?

Safe surfing. :wavey:

I was hoping to post you to say thanks, but have one more little problem. I can't run System Restore. When I click on System Restore I get the error message "RunDll as an App" has failed (or soemthing to that effect). And lists rundll32.exe as the actual program. I clicked on report to see if I could maake sense of the error but it was gobbedly gook to me (I'm sure you would understand it). Don't know if this is still malware, or related to changes we might have made? Please advise and thank you, J Moskus

Hi jmoskus That's an odd one for sure. Did you follow the directions in my previous post, to turn off System Restore, or did you use another method ? The reason I ask is that I've never personally experienced what you describe. Try the method described in my previous post and if that doesn't do the job, post back with the error message.

Yes, followed your instructions, and I noticed this happening when I was first trying to fix the infection because one of the things I thought of trying was to run system restore, but I had forgotten all about this until today. I followed the instuctions and here's what happened. I did find the XCP CD Proxy listed. However the 2 tools, Sophos and Symantec didn't find anything. When I tried to manually delete I got the message "This specified service does not exist as an installed service." I also ran Sony's removal tool and it didn't say anything after it ran, but when I went back, the XCP CD Proxy was no longer listed. For kicks, I tried system restore after I rebooted but no joy. Here's the Hijack this log:
