Hi Crow,
Would you mind guiding me further after I click enter please?
This is an area not familiar to me. After clicking enter it says:

Micrososf <R> Windows DOS
<C> Copyright MIcrosoft Corp 1990-2001
C:\ DOCUME~\USER>ipconfig/flushdns
Windows IP configuration
Successfully flushed the DNS Resolver Cache
C:\DOCUME~\USER>

When I click X to close the command it then says:
"Windows cannot end this program. It may need more time to complete the operation.
To return to Windows and check the status of the operation, click Cancel
If you choose to end the program immediately, you may loose any unsaved data, click END NOW."

To flush DNS cache in XP click start, run and type command. At the prompt type ipconfig /flushdns and hit enter.

Thanks

Hi tallin, :wavey:

You can do one of two things.
  • If you're sure that what ever you are doing in the command window is finished (in this case you are)

Successfully flushed the DNS Resolver Cache
    C:\DOCUME~\USER>

You can just go ahead and click End Now.
  • A much more elegant solution would be to type exit in the command prompt and press enter.
Hope that helps.

Alot of the performance issues I see can be solved by simply running maintenance. Windows is intuitive and will learn by your actions, speeding up the most frequently used applications. So run your disk cleanup, defrag, delete cookies..etc. often. There are other variations of these utilities available although I have yet to find a problem with the ones that Windows provides.

To flush DNS cache in XP click start, run and type command. At the prompt type ipconfig /flushdns and hit enter.

Crow, suddenly after following the ipconfig /flushdns for months, I get the following message when I try to execute:

"Could not flush the DNS Resolver cache: Function failed during execution."

All other instructions you give on your maintenance site are strictly adhered to.

I hope you can help.

hmm.. that is indeed odd. Have you run Hijack this to make sure that its not a malwre issue...? If its not, then run SFC and see if it will fix the problem.

Thanks Crow for your post and advice.

However Doug solved this for me in the following way for which I was very grateful.

kind regards, and thanks again for your post.

Hi Tallin,

I'll pop in with a quick answer, and Crow may have a more complete explanation to offer later.

It is quite possible that your DNS Service is not "running" (as in "Status" is not "started and running)

If the above is true, then your machine would have no way to perform the procedure you are asking of it.

Go to your Services
Start - Run - Services.msc - Enter
Scroll down to DNS Client
Double-Click on DNS Client, then select to change the status to Start. (Its OK to leave it as Manual, if that is the current setting, but you will have to repeat this procedure in the future if you elect to flush your dns cache again)

Now you can run your - ipconfig /flushdns

I highly recommend that you also clear your ipconfig and renew your ipconfig at this same time

start - Run - (type)ipconfig /releaseall
start - Run - (type)ipconfig /renew

Please keep us posted with your progress and any additional questions.

Here's a thread in another Forum where the Members are discussing the same problem.
http://help.lockergn...opict44777.html

Best Regards

And my reply:

Dough, Great post and even more information than I requested. You are worth your weight in gold.

I have checked my DNS and you were right it was on manual, but not started! So since starting it my ipconfig /flushdns cleared for me as you predicted it would. Should I change it to automatic?

I also ran as you advised,
start - Run - (type)ipconfig /releaseall
start - Run - (type)ipconfig /renew
how often should I do this

Thanks for the link with further information, will put it away safely for another time after a good read.

Have not seen Crow about for awhile, hope he is keeping well.

Thanks again for helping me out yet another time.

kind regards,

3) Clear your ‘SSL state 'every 3 Days.

4) Clear your ‘Java files’ in your Java console every 3 Days

8) ‘Degauss’ your monitor by turning it off completely and back on, every 5 Days.

9) ‘Completely turn off’ your machine every 5 Days. This is different than re-starting. When you re-start, it does not shut down 100%

Quite useful however, 6) ‘Defrag’ your hard Drive every 5 Days.
frequently defrag HD will do no good

I defrag my HD once a week and am not experiencing problem with it. Instead, it saved me from the "waiting time" of loading some programs I use.

I have a daily update on my anti-virus, anti-spyware, spybot, and ad-aware... and they're all set to do a full system scan daily... i always do a disk cleaup daily...

is it jst if i delete the contents of my prefetch folder? i always delete the contents of that folder...

Hi Hurricane Andrew, If you regularly empty your prefetch it will slow things down quite a bit, so its not recommended for frequent maintenance. After you empty the prefetch it will repopulate itself after each reboot, but then its best to leave it alone unless you are having a particular problem. If you are using for example ATF-Cleaner by Atribune (an excellent cleaner for Win XP and Win 2K with IE) you can leave the prefetch uncheckmarked/unticked and just clear the rest. Regards paws

I'm a tad late, as usual, but better late than never. I picked up some good advice; a lot I'd never heard before. And I shall do some 'housework' right after I click out. Thank you, each and every.

Well

Does anyone know why?

I should look before I leap next time, as quoted by tallin in post#21 Doug has the answer as follows:

If the above is true, then your machine would have no way to perform the procedure you are asking of it.

Thanks Crow, tallin and Doug for this valuable info.

Good little thread this one, bumped up by your kind post. Glad to be able to assist.

kind regards, and glad you found the answer. More from Crow in my Maintenance Program at the bottom of my signature (Learning each day) He taught me so much but we don't see him much these days on WTT.
