Yeah, the ESET scan did take an hour or more.
(So, question, is that itself an indicator of things running slowly?)

A quick question outside this issue-----friend of mine got her email address book hacked (I guess) and someone is sending out a money scam in her name.  Do you know where she should look for help?

So many things can contribute to a slow machine.
It can be Microsoft, antivirus updates, just a long list.

Tell your friend to change her email password from a known clean computer and run antivirus and malware scans.

Give your computer a day of ordinary use, then let me know how it's behaving.

Well, I guess it is mostly behaving well.
Of course if I indulge my habit of having Many browser windows open, it gets balky; but when I close them it's okay.
The odd thing with various results when I go back to the machine after ans absence continues.  I.e. sometimes it wakes up with a touch on the space bar or pretty much anything else; sometimes a quick click on the power button; sometimes it takes long enough to show a sign I figure it is all locked up.
Sometimes I seem to have to force it to turn off, then reboot.
Don't know what it means; I can live with it but of course I worry something catastrophic is in the works.

So aside from that, guess it is working well.

I am always soliciting opinions about what would be a really good, long-lasting computer.
My wife and I use Dells serially.  Buy them cheap (new) from eBay resellers.  They last a couple of years or five.  If you have a favorite, always interested.

Thank you for help this time around.

BTW---here is an adjunct.

A lot of the weirdness remaining unchanged my online experience is in Facebook, and has been going on for at least many months.
For instance, on any given FB page I can only scroll down so far before the entries are a blurred blank.  Or the pictures people post are empty squares of black or other color.  Sometimes clicking on "Notifications" shows me more blurs.  Sometimes this resolves into the list in a few seconds; sometimes it requires clicking elsewhere and back again, or even trying again in a few minutes.

I kinda suspect this is all within FB, which has grown strange in the past year or so; but wonder if you know any computer issues that could be responsible.

I don't think answers can be obtained from FB itself, or any of its sponsored forums.

It gives me the opinion your having an issue with the computers processor? and possibly other areas of hardware for fast functioning, maybe needs some driver updates?

I've seen many articles on the net where people complain about trying to wake a computer that has been in sleep mode.
I'm not a hardware person at all or can I get my head around how the internals of a computer work...sigh

What I'm also picking up on is that this might have been a used/refurbished computer when you bought it?
Not that there's anything wrong with that but you get what you buy, never knowing exactly how well maintained or updated, or if a wipe and reinstall was done correct. But if you used the computer for some time and it worked very well from the get go then I think it was in good shape when you bought it.

A good thing about buying 'new' computers is you get the option to buy extended warranties and options that are not offered on buying as is.

As for brands best to buy, you'll have to do you research on that.

You can start by Googling best performing computers to see which would fit your needs.

On items not working well while on Facebook, I'd have to refer you over to the hardware forum and see if anyone can pick up on what could be happening there.

Start a new topic and describe the problem.

OK, then.    (My wife thinks she bought this new and I think it was refurbed!)

I will carry on with research.  None of y'all have ever come back with a recommendation for computers, so must be some policy.  All right.

I will submit a question to Hardware, just to see what is up.

Thanks for seeing me through this.  Things are improved.

If I say I had a favorite, and it was read by a competing manufacturer, I could be accused of plugging and advertising  for that brand (it's happened to many)

Same goes for antivirus brands, I say which I think is the best, it goes all over the internet that (This lady says use this) or if from a different help forum that helpers name so........

It's best policy to give out information for many and you find one that works well for you.

As for computers, there are actually several good name brands out there.
