boot your vista install cd and choosing repair pc then using it's system recovery options select command prompt and run chkdsk /p from there.

I tried to do the memset but nothing happened. i shut the PC down, booted and nothing happened, just went to the login page. would this happen with the Vista disc too?

Just to make sure i've done the Memset disc correctly. when i'm logged in and put the disc in this happens

has it frozen since you ran the sfc/ scannow option?

Yeah twice, unfortunately.

not sure what memtest disk your trying but did you make sure your cd/dvd drive is the first boot device so it boots whatever disk you have in the drive, memtest disk or your vista install disk, etc. on pc startup instead of just booting your hard drive and taking you straight to the windows os?

the chkdsk problem.

Ran the Vista disc > command prompt etc

typed chkdsk /p

"Invalid parameter"

so tried with chkdsk C:

scanned for awhile, saw a few things saying no problem and one saying Windows checked file system and found no problems.

Scan stopped, at the bottom was

Failed to transfer logged messages to the event log with status 50

here's the original link again, run through all tests suggested to see if any 1 thing stops the freeze problem :- http://helpdeskgeek....random-freezes/

if nothing seems to stop it, then run a diagnostic on the hard drive, use vivard if you want or go to the drive manufacturers site and use their software.

here's a list of some other hd testing software :- http://pcsupport.abo...p/tophddiag.htm

personally i always used to use either seagates seatools or western digitals lifeguard to run checks on my hard drives.

if the drives fail any of the tests then i'd assume that is probably the cause of your random freezes and suggest installing a new hard drive.

seatools guide:- http://knowledge.sea...US/FAQ/202435en

wd lifeguard guide (pdf) :- http://www.wdc.com/w...2779-701022.pdf

run the long or extended tests or whatever the software you decide use calls it to test your hd.

I had a friend over and they tested it with CrystalDiskInfo, they said it was a similar test to the above. he recommended i get a new hard drive.

this is what it found

Infact he told me to buy a whole new pc but no chance i can afford that at the moment. does this look like its the problem?

well to be honest i don't see anything that would overly concern me just yet, if the raw value of the reallocated sectors count was higher and kept increasing with use then i'd be worried and swap the drive asap but your raw value is only 1 at the moment.

the drive is a seagate baracuda drive so run the seagate seatools :- http://knowledge.sea...US/FAQ/202435en and see what that report says.

There are 5 tests for the seagate. i wasn't sure which ones to do or do them all. I did the Short scan, Short Generic scan and the Long Generic. Log file says they all passed.

it passed, so i doubt you need a new drive just yet or that the freeze problem is caused by your drive, time to move onto the software checks to see if something there is causing the problem, make sure you have everything updated, clean boot, etc. etc.

if worst comes to worst and you still can't find the cause of the freeze problem then i'd suggest doing a clean install on your current drive and see if that fixes the freeze problem.
