Best Answer terry1966 , 01 May 2015 - 01:01 AM

seeing how no usb devices work then i think i'd be looking at a power issue with the usb ports or on the 5v rail of the psu. this is hp's usb troubleshooting guide run through it and see if anything solves your problems. :- http://support.hp.co...... Go to the full post

i'd appreciate it. i'm on disability and the cost of repair or a replacement just isn't there so thanks for trying.

with luck just a simple restore to a time when everything was working is all that is needed.

i vote that terry1966 receive promotion and be given anything else needed. i'm typing this using the usb logitech keyboard K120 that is working again thanks to his/her post here. looking through the HP link to the "The front USB ports do not work on your desktop PC" guide shows a Figure:7 pointing out the usb connection to the motherboard. i simply nudged mine to see if it was secure or felt loose and my moniter blinked, the scroll locks blinked and and thought well i'll try to type but...ok i was doubtful that did it and all was fixed but...it's alive! my keyboard is alive! it shows visiting tech by his name...don't know where he's visiting from but would like to...there is intelligent life there! all i can say is thanks man. i guess sometimes it's that simple and sometimes it's not. now that's done are there any backups i need to do or such...now it shows the driver ver. in device mgr. that before was saying didn't exist was needed. thanks again. thanks again terry1966 and you too ztrucker for keeping the ball rolling. have a great weekend!

 :weee:  :notworthy: :yeah: :woot:

glad you finally found and fixed the problem. :D

don't know if you'd already said you'd been inside the case but like you've found out, it is always best to try the simple things first like making sure all data and power cables are firmly attached in the correct places etc. when troubleshooting these pesky pc problems, and it's usually always the same results, fixing the problem is easy, finding it is the pain in the backside

as to backups you should always have a complete backup strategy in place, so you don't lose any of your important stuff, this would usually consist of at least 1 full hard drive image in case the drive failed so you can install the os and all programs and data again onto a new hard drive along with weekly/monthly backups of just your data.

i always have 2 different backup mediums, hard drive and dvd's for my vital stuff, which should be renewed periodically.

i recommend macrium reflect for doing your hard drive backup image :- http://www.macrium.c...eflectfree.aspx

or all your backups if you buy it and not just use the free version.

here's another link you may find useful :- http://www.enterpris...recovery-1.html

i found out long ago that to get rid of most problems...first turn it on. and you go from there. i was being told by some "experts" at other sites a system restore was all i could try. i guess he was mad and felt i'd toss my pc. he did not want to help me and that made him the one person i didn't want it from. a lot of you help and for free on your time and thanks is all you get...hopefully gratification from helping others. i know karma is alive and well and will visit the good, the bad and hopefully the ugly too eventually. you've got some karma coming someday and i thank you! the way it happened and all just told me do not redo, rebuy, undo or fly to the moon because everything else was fine. i do again thank you and ztrucker too, :notworthy:

thanks for the praise, not sure how deserved it is but it is most appreciated, and i'm sure ztrucker would say the same that we're just glad we can help put a smile on people's faces every now and then by getting their pc's back up and running.

your praise and enthusiasm certainly put a smile on my face. :D

so thanks again and have many fun hours using your pc, and you know where to come if you have any further problems to solve or queries you want answered.

Glad to hear you got it working and many thanks to Terry for responding.

So bottom line the problem was a loose or not fully seated header cable?

I'll have to remember that for future USB problems.

thanks to you ztrucker for sticking around! i guess so...as i'd replied the section of terry's link there is a pic Figure 7, showing the bank of usb ports plugged into the motherboard. i looked at mine to see if there was any thing visually wrong like maybe a wire had been hot. i touched it with the tip of my finger as to nudge it in further if needed and my screen blinked, i heard one of the fans go passing gear, then the locks on my keyboard blinked and came on as they do at start up and bingo. i have an old corded mouse which has been on the blink and i bought a logitech cordless 510 with unifyer. tried d'loading the unifyer software, plugged in the unifyer and...windows did not load device cannot find driver. :rant2: their website is no help so if anyone has any magic code for this to work please spill it! it seems they have a big problem with these and windows 7, but they should work!

well to be honest i'd start from the beginning, insert the wifi dongle in the back of the pc and leave it in there, remove all drivers you've installed for the 510, next i'd go into the device manager and uninstall all usb controllers then reboot your pc and let windows find and install everything again.

with luck it should find and install the correct driver for the device, don't think you need that unifyer software unless your planning on connecting more than a single device to the receiver so don't install it for now. check the mouse as good new batteries and pair it to the receiver also check what surface your using it on try a different one to see if it now works.

if it doesn't work still is the receiver lighting up or blinking in anyway to show it's getting power? like support told you though you may have just been unlucky and got one with a fault that needs returning so they can replace it for you, it's always good to take up the offer of a free replacements because it usually rules out the device as being the problem in the first place and you know you have to look elsewhere then.

yes start with those.

device-manager-usb-controller.jpg

personally i'd uninstall everything you see under this tab, some don't need uninstalling but then again it won't harm the pc anyway because they will just be reinstalled again on reboot.
