Another hijack of your thread... :D Just a note... looking at your malware removal thread... mostly what you did there was just housekeeping. Those initial entries that were flagged were contained in a "backup" of PC tuneup that is part of your AVG. I believe they only existed due to out of date Java. They were not currently a threat to you (which is why Mbam never picked them up). I'm only pointing that out to say I do not believe they are related to your problem with Internet Explorer. I realize that you have IE set up just the way you want it.. but if it were me... I'd try to use FireFox for awhile and see if I had the same issues as IE is exhibiting. If the problems are confined to IE... then maybe there is an easier solution than doing a repair install (I don't know what it is at this point... I'm just suggesting some troubleshooting). Good luck.

Hi pulsebabe, If your Laptop has only had a bit of 'housekeeping' as Tomk suggested, let's try something simple to fix your freezing Browser problem. We are going to re-set Internet Explorer. NOTE: If you have any special setting or add-ons they will have to be re-applied as this will create a fresh IE (Internet Explorer). !. Exit all programs, including Internet Explorer. 2. Open the Start menu and type into the search box ( inetcpl.cpl ) without the brackets. 3. In the 'Internet Options' box that appears, click the 'Advanced' tab 4. Look for 'Reset Internet Explorer settings' and click 'Reset'. 5. Again, click 'Reset'. 6. When it has finished resetting, click 'Close'. 7. Open Internet Explorer Has this fixed the problem? :) Cheers, Lee

No, not a good idea at this stage.

Did you try my suggestion of re-setting Internet Explorer in my last post?

Please try that if you haven't yet.

Cheers,
Lee

pulsebabe, Could you please follow the 're-setting Internet Explorer' instructions in Post #17 If there are any steps there you don't understand or are confused about, please let me know. Until this is done, we have no way of analyzing any of your current IE problems. Cheers, Lee

OK, it sounds like you need to properly run chkdsk as that seems to be what your PC is trying to do (to fix itself) when you mentioned you are getting 'Disk Volume errors' displayed. However, by switching off your PC when you think chkdsk is 'freezing', it's job is being interrupted.

1. Make sure you are logged on as Administrator in User Accounts.

2. Go to Start / All Programs / Accessories / Run

3. In the Run text box, type (cmd ) without brackets and click OK.

4. In the box that opens you will see a flashing prompt. type in ( chkdsk c: /f ) without the brackets but with the space before / .

5. You will be asked if you want to schedule chkdsk to run at next reboot, n/y (no or yes). Type in ( y ) and press Enter.

6. Re-boot your PC.

7. The chkdsk process can take quite some time, so do not touch anything or in any way interfere with chkdsk when it is running, even if it appears to freeze or your screen blacks out.

Cheers,
Lee

i did do a full chkdsk with the malware team. i have just tried to do what youve suggested, when i get to the box and type in the chk....... and press enter i get a message saying 'Access Denied as you do not have sufficient privaleges. You have to invoke this utility running in elevated mode. i see youre in oz so will take a while to write back so i will go over to the instructions i had to run this from the malware team and try to do it that way in the meantime.

If you have now run chkdsk c: /f you need to post it's Log File here.

Here is how to find it in Vista:

CHKDSK LogFile:

1. Go to Start and type in "eventvwr.msc" (without the quotes) and press Enter.

2. Expand the Windows logs heading, then select the Application log file entry.

3. Double click on the Source column header.

4. Scroll down the list until you find the Chkdsk entry ( wininit )

5. Copy and paste the results into your next post.

Also, I noted in your other thread in the Melware forum that you have a Google Toolbar installed on IE. I'm not sure that re-setting IE would have removed that add-on. If it is still there it needs to be removed to restore IE to it's original default state.

To remove the Google Toolbar follow the simple instructions here:
http://www.java.com/.../5000012600.xml

Re-set IE again.

Cheers,
Lee
