Hello DavidL

it is opening up browser windows to different sites. It was not doing that before.

  • Combofix

  • Download ComboFix from one of the following locations:

    Link 1
    Link 2

  • VERY IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

  • IMPORTANT - Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. If you have difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, refer to this link here .
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.

  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
  • Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Posted Image

  • Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Posted Image

  • Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.
  • When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.
  • Notes: Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
  • Do not "re-run" Combofix. If you have a problem, reply back for further instructions.

Hello DavidL

Thank you for the log.

That seems to have done the trick. You had a rootkit on board that was evading our tools.

Any remaining malware should be easier to detect and remove now.

Are you able to update MBAM now (just curious)?

Please run a full system scan with MBAM and then follow with ESET as you did before, then post the logs created in your next reply.

Are you still getting the error messages from Norton?

Please describe how your machine is behaving now. Are you still experiencing symptoms?

Interesting. It still will not let me update MBAM (same error message) but the intrusions seem to have stopped. Thank you so much for all of your help! - David

Hello DavidL

the intrusions seem to have stopped.

Thats great news, but were the MBAM and ESET logs clean? Please post them (or let me know) then we can go through some cleanup and update procedures.

It still will not let me update MBAM (same error message)

I found the following thread on the MalwareBytes Forum that deals with possible solutions to the same problem you have:

http://forums.malwar...showtopic=45327

If those suggestions do not help the best way forward may be to register at MalwareBytes and start a new thread stating your problem (include the version of MBAM you have, the error message and the name and version of your Security Programs).

Oh yes, very sorry for the delay. MBAM is not updating for me. I went through the forum and tried a few of the proposed fixes but something is still blocking the update. Is it absolutely vital that register with them? In the following post are my MBAM (without update) and ESET logs:

Hello DavidL

Is it absolutely vital that register with them

Its not vital (just a suggestion), but it may be the best way to resolve your MBAM problem. I am sure the people at MBAM will be able to provide you with the best information about why their product is not updating.

Please post the logs when you can :)

Hello, it looks like ESET has changed something. There was no details tab this time around, so I couldn not find the log. (I thought I missed something, btu I ran it twice and couldn't find any tabs at all.) When the scan finished, though, it did say that nothing was detected. The MBAM log (below) also looks good. Hello DavidL

Your log appears to be clean! Good work

Please work your way through the following steps:

  • Please Uninstall Combofix

    • Click on "Start" and then on "Run".
    • Now type combofix /uninstall in the run box and click "OK". Please note the space between the "x" and the "/Uninstall", it needs to be there.

  • Please perform the following cleanup procedure

    • Double click on the OTL.exe icon on your desktop to run the program. (Note: If you are running Vista, right-click on the file and choose Run As Administrator).
    • Once OTL has opened, click on the "CleanUp!" button.
    • Follow any prompts that you receive.

  • Your Adobe Reader is out of date

    • You can obtain the latest version of Adobe Reader from here, and the latest version of Flash Player from here.
    • For more information and links to Adobe updates and downloads click here.

Once you have completed the above steps you should be good to go! If you have any further questions, please feel free to ask.

  • Finally, please take the time to read through the information provided below:

    Enhance your System Security

    • For an excellent list of free anti virus software, free online virus scanners, free spyware detection/removal and free firewalls, click here.

    • IMPORTANT! Please make sure you only have ONE firewall and ONE real-time antivirus installed on your system. When using "on demand" scanners, first update the detection signature files, then disconnect from the internet and disable your resident security program before running the scan.
    • Once complete, remember to re-engage your resident security before going online.

    Web Browsers and Browser Security

    Firefox
    • Firefox is generally considered to have greater browsing security in comparison to other popular programs. You can download Firefox 3.0 from here.

    No-Script
    • If you use Firefox as your default browser, No-Script can provide additional security by preventing malicious scripts from being executed on your system.
    • You can download No-Script by clicking here.

    Internet Explorer
    • The newest version of Internet Explorer is available from here.

    SpywareBlaster
    • If you use Internet Explorer as your default browser, SpywareBlaster would be a valuable addition to your online security.
    • SpywareBlaster prevents malicious ActiveX objects from being downloaded onto your system.
    • You can download SpywareBlaster by clicking here.

    Web of Trust
    • When using search engines, Web of Trust provides you with an easy way of telling the good sites from the bad and is compatible with both Firefox and Internet Explorer.
    • Coloured symbols are displayed next to search results, giving you more confidence in the links you choose to click on: Green (To go), Yellow (Caution) and Red (Stop).
    • You can download Web of Trust by clicking here.

    Keep your Software Updated
    • Outdated software can sometimes have vulnerabilities that are exploitable by malware.
    • Check if there are available updates for your installed software with Secunia's Online Software Inspector by clicking here.

    Passwords
    • Learn how to create strong passwords by clicking here and test the strength of the passwords you already use by clicking here.
