Appears the external monitor should be automatic from replies I've read.

If so and you get no external display this would then cast suspicion on the graphics chip / motherboard.

Jephree, you've been extremely helpful. I appreciate all your help. I guess I'll try HP tech support again. They were also helpful. I'll try later this week, I'm a bit tired of it now.

No problem. I think contacting HP is a good idea especially if the laptop is still under any warranty. Anyway let us know how it goes.
