ive never found malwarebytes any good. even when i had the virus, malwarebytes still didnt show up anything. does malwarebytes only show up malware or does it show adaware and spyware also, as the superantispyware i have finds a lot more than previous programs ive had and malwarebytes still shows nothing?

It's your PC pulsebaby, if you don't consider Malwarebytes to be any good, don't re-install it.
If you decide not to re-install Melwarebytes, It might at least be worth keeping 'Scotty' which has a very small footprint and uses a tiny amount of resources. It does a great job too as a Program Guard.

I completely agree with Doug about Adobe Reader / Adobe Acrobat. Apart from it's well know failings he already mentioned, it's a resource hog and has a LARGE footprint. 'Foxit' is great

As for CCleaner, I only mentioned the steps to take if you do decide to use it so that it is not an 'active' program. I didn't recommend the program (even though I have it) and I'm not going to here. The temptation to start using the Registry Cleaner feature is a tempting danger for many PC users. Anything it can do can be done manually.

Lee

Just ignore what it says. Just untick the top box first and then untick any other 'extras' and then conintue/next.. It will still install but without those features. Cheers, Lee

Yes, remove Foxit toolbar. Foxit works just like Adobe, fully automatic. As for Adobe flash, don't remove it. That one you need for web content (movies, etc).

I downloaded the latest version yesterday. Has Adobe done a deal with Google?
It tried too 'silently' install a Google Toolbar and it's updater without any 'ask me first'

I never would have know it was happening as it just looked like the normal Adobe Flash install, except "Scotty' went berserk and blocked it

Lee

You sound good to go

The only other issue I can think of you might like to adjust, is the amount of space your System Restore is using (WAY to much).

If you want to have a go at it, follow these steps for Vista:

1. Make sure you have Admin. rights and then go to 'Run'. Type in cmd

2. Type in the following command prompt where the blinking icon is vssadmin list shadowstorage

Look for User Shadow Copy Storage Space which will tell you how much space in GB it is useing.

3. Now you want to change that max. allowed space.

4.Type in exactly as shown and note Upper and lower case letters. Also note spaces or lack of them:
vssadmin Resize ShadowStorage /For=C: /On=C: /Maxsize=2GB

5. Reboot and go to Start / run and type in WinDirStat and check out the file size now. It should be 2GB.

Cheers,
Lee

Question 1. Yes

Question 2. Be VERY carefully what add-ons you use. They are (all) mostly poorly written software code and make IE8 vulnerable to Melware attack.
Best thing to do before installing an add-on is to Google 'Problems with ..... and IE8.' and check out the responses. There is certainly a Skype issue with IE8 and I would avoid that software. It was the likely cause of your initial problems with IE8.

Lee

If the other PC has a Vista OS, your fine. If not, let me know what the OS is.

You need to turn off User Account Control (UAC)

Turn User Account Control on or off:
http://windows.micro...ntrol-on-or-off

You can turn it back on when you don;t need the Admin. rights later.

ive not had a chance to do the sys restore yet, i should get time this weekend. once thats done i will monitor how the system is going for a few days. all seems ok with ie even with google toolbar back. one thing i do get probs with and im not sure if its a pc fault or isp fault, when im watching tv catchup or some other online videos i get a lot of buffering or having to refresh my screen, it is very annoying and although ive not webcammed for a while i used to often get bandwith problems, what is the cause of these? also, im just going thru my system deleting stuff thats left over from deleted programs. ive found a file called downloaded program files, in it are some java active x, pitstop utility and some damaged files, apart from pitstop all have nothing in. im unable to delete these files separately, am i ok to delete the whole dp files? thanks
