Denise,

Windows Defragger also compresses files. If that's the case, I'm afraid to look through the rest of my ext hdds until I absolutely have to

What makes you think Windows Defragger compresses files. There is no information or option that tells me that is a fact as far as I can see......I could be incorrect as I have not researched this deeply.

Here is a link that maybe of interest to you regarding decompressing many files at a time. Just a suggestion.

Gotta tell ya, tallin. That was a terrific thought you had and it solved the problem.

Just a pity I did not tell you about it earlier. You do realise that you only need to decompress your files as you need them don't you? I still have many on my HD that Microsoft Cleanup compressed when I enabled by mistake those options, but as I have not used those files since, they are all still compressed doing no harm at all.

More thoughts that may help you.

kind regards,

Edit: Sorry Denise, meant to say compresses - not decompress.......my mistake...sorry for that.

Hi tallin . . . I don't think that Windows Defragger decompresses files, I think that it compresses them. When I've watched Windows Defragger at work, it doesn't just move files, it also compresses them. It says either "moving" or "compressing," depending on what it's doing at the time. I thought that when it was compressing the files, it was just moving them up close to one another so there wouldn't be so many gaps between files. I checked several of my drives and all the files on them are compressed, except for the files that I just recently moved to the drives. I hadn't run Disk Cleanup on them so it had to have been Windows Defragger. Power Defragmenter GUI doesn't compress files. When it's finished, there are numerous gaps between the files. I used to run Windows Defragger to get them "together." They got a little too close together though. :( I decompressed all the program files on my C drive. I think that it can only help to make them work a little better. I'm slowly but surely decompressing my video files. Right now, I'm doing my Thanksgiving and Christmas video files. I have over 2,500 Christmas mp3's but I don't think that I'll get to them soon. I have all of my backups on ext hdds also. I won't be decompressing those unless I need some of them. I have 15,142 mp3 files, not including Christmas music. :smack: Denise

Hi all . . .

I found a few things along the way about decompressing files, Windows Defragger, and MPC.

You do realise that you only need to decompress your files as you need them don't you? I still have many on my HD that Microsoft Cleanup compressed when I enabled by mistake those options, but as I have not used those files since, they are all still compressed doing no harm at all.

I tried to decompress all the files in a folder. If all the files in a folder were compressed, I was able to click on Properties > Advanced, and uncheck "Compress contents to save disk space." If several files were already decompressed, this option wasn't available. I then discovered that I could check the box to compress all files and folders, and then chose the option to compress just the folder name. After that, I would uncheck the box to compress the files and folders and chose the option to decompress all the files and folders in the folder. It went much faster. Then I discovered that I could do the same thing with an entire drive. Just click Properties > check Compress, chose the option to compress just the drive name, then uncheck the box and chose all files and folders, and the entire drive would decompress.

I also learned that Windows Defragger doesn't compress files, it compacts them (my original thought that it only moves them closer to one another), so I use Windows Defragger again.

I also uninstalled Media Player Classic and installed Media Player Classic Homecinema, which has better video quality.

Merry Christmas everybody!

Well, let's see....

My Northern California pack-mule could get me to a New York shop that carries Mallomars in about three months.
If I can borrow a horse, maybe 2 months.
Depending on weather, I may have to divert to Miami.
UPS or FedEx from Miami shouldn't be much more than 4 or 5 days.

Hope you're not holding your breath.

Best Regards

Those Mallomars should be almost there about now.
Good One Doug :D
