OK, lets check out if your CPU (dual core) is functioning properly and using both cores.

Just follow the simple steps here:

How to Test a Dual Core CPU

Cheers,
Lee

pulsebabe, No, that's exactly what it is meant to show. It means both cores are being used. It is very hard to determine without a 'hands-on' just how your Laptop is really performing. Acceptable for the model or not. Your Laptop is quite a decent one with plenty of memory for Vista (3GB) and an adequately fast CPU (The 2.16GHz Pentium T3400 processor). We have 'cleaned up' the start-up list and installed a decent Defrag. program. Your security is good and well matched, so you should be experiencing a decently performing Laptop unless there is something wrong with it we can't diagnose from here. If there are still annoying issues or the performance is not what you expect (all PC's slow down over time unless expertly maintained). you might consider having the Laptop serviced by a professional hands-on Tech. PC's are a bit like Cars, they often need a tune-up and service. Depending on the skills of the PC owner, some things we can fix from here, but not everything :( Cheers, Lee

the test actually said that after unchecking the cpu0 there should be less activity in one of the boxes, but my activity stayed equal, so thats not what was expected to show

No, whatever you were running at the time of the test shows that it was optimized for dual core. Obviously you have well matched cores. The test shows both cores are working and that is all we needed to find out. Not if one core was working more or less than the other. If both were working equally, that's fine and nothing to be concerned about. Both cores work and that's all we needed to know. Cheers, Lee

Hi pulsebabe, let's still get a full report from PCPitStop Overdrive. Earlier you had trouble with the "Run As Administrator" function. Here's a screen shot of "where" you can make this selection. Run_as_Adminitrator.jpg Click on the Vista Start Orb. Select - All Programs Near the top of the list, you will find Internet Explorer At that location, you can Right-Click and select from the context menu to Run As Administrator. Please do so now, and then run another fresh OverDrive and post the Results link

As you can observe from the OverDrive Results, you have a large number of applications and processes running from your Startup Menu.
This means that the enabled items will load (and consume system resources) any time you turn on your machine. (any time you boot)

To observe with OverDrive....
Select - Software from the top menu line
then next
Select - Processes from the lower menu line

In order to regain control over what you have running on this machine, let's use CodeStuff Starters.

We'll take it in (3) three steps, starting with Startup Menu, then Processes, then Services.

First we will begin with Startups

Please consider running this simple utility that will help you get control of programs and processes that you wish to have running active, or not.

CodeStuff-Starters
http://www.snapfiles...et/Starter.html

Download and install, agreeing to the licensing terms and allow to install with all of the default settings as preselected in the installation wizard.

When you finally allow CodeStuff-Starters to run
It will preselect StartUps Tab -
  • Click on File
  • Select - save as .Plain Text (name the report file - Startups Nov7.txt

In your next reply, post the file as an attached file (use browse and upload buttons -- at the bottom-right corner of your topic posting window where you are typing your next reply)

Please do not make any changes with Code-Stuff Starters, until after you post the requested information above and receive recommendations from a helper here.

Best Regards

CodeStuff Starters is a utility application program that is available on-demand but does not run actively, nor consume any resources except when you are actually using it (Maybe 45 seconds at a time).

After you are finished using it, it can remain in your Program Files Folder for future use.
It occupies about 600kb of hard drive space.
Compare that to the size of an average low pixel .jpg image file.
___________________________--

As for the processes having been disabled via WinPatrol....
You've worked long and hard through this thread and the previous one.
Others have given you excellent suggestions to reduce processes running
But your PCPitstop Overdrive still shows (76) Seventy-Six items Consuming 53% of your RAM at 1545MB used, and 27% of your CPU processing Cycles..... just while it is sitting there doing.... nothing.

Compare that to an average cluttered machine running between 32 and 45 items active.
Compare that to a lean running machine having between 25 and 32 items active.

Both percentages of RAM used and CPU committed, should be very close to (0%) zero percent when at rest.

But it is up to you.
You've already received some good assistance up to this point in your Topic Thread.
It is certainly your choice, whether or not you are satisfied with your machines present configuration and level of performance.

Best Regards
