thank you Ztruker i will post over there. i wont be looking for a card for the old one, i was just telling you what i had tried with a video card that i had laying around to illustrate the point that i know all cards dont fit all boards. i'm guessing the card wouldnt fit the new one either because my old one has an available pci-e slot and the new one as you've said would need a pci-e video card so this card that i have wouldnt be of use. well that would be somewhere down the line anyhow, i would, when i can invest in ram first, just rying to get a heads up on what i would be looking for. thank you again.

No true, you can run a 32 or 64 bit Operating System. Vista is a good 64bit OS, Windows 7 is better. Will be interesting to see which one is installed on the new one. With that kind of hardware, a whole new world of possibilities opens up for you

hi ztruker, turns out that it the 805 processor and the owner had installed the 32bit vista ultimate. i borrowed a disc and installed win 7 ultimate. just thought i'd give you an update. i do think that i'm in need of a video card, having some trouble with setting the resolution, which i posted serately about..... maybe i will try out the suggestions you made until i can get video card (virtual partition for xp), if it turns out that the res problem is related to the video card...

Hi cld.

I don't know what kind of Disc you received with your E-machine, but give this a try:

Download and create a bootable CD from the .iso file XP Recovery Console

You don't burn the iso file itself to CD., you create a CD from the iso file using your CD burning software. There is a good freeware burner called ImgBurn which will
do this.

Boot the CD and at the first opportunity, enter R to start the Recovery Console.
Next, choose which XP installation you want to login to. Normally this will be 1.
Lastly you will be asked for the Administrator password. Just press the Enter key as the Administrator does not have a password (unless you gave it one, then you would enter it).
From the command prompt, enter: chkdsk c: /r
Allow it to complete undisturbed. It can take an hour or more depending on the size of the hard drive.

Remove the CD, type exit and the computer will reboot. Hopefully that will have fixed the problem (corrupted file system)
.

If that doesn't work then I would suspect a problem with your RAM. You didn't say what kind of computer you have, dekstop or laptop, but for either it's fairly easy to open it and check the RAM. If there is more than one stick, remove one and try again. If it still fails, swap RAM sticks. If you don't want to open the computer to do this, you can try running a memory diagnostic.

There are two programs that are normally used to test computer memory, Memtest86+ and Microsoft Memory Diagnostic. They are available from the following locations:

Memtest86+
Microsoft Memory Diagnostic

They are bootable CD ISO images. You don't burn the iso file itself to CD., you create a CD from the iso file using your CD burning software. There is a good freeware burner called ImgBurn which will do this easily.

Let me know how you make out.
