appleoddity thank you..i gues its possible that there is another disc, but i always keep my software discs together and this disc says on the label "used to install OS, drivers and programs" if memory serves me correctly its always been 1 disc and on other pc's that i have formatted for friends if there is a nother disc it always says to insert it. i have done this pc in the past as well without a problem. so i dont know whats happening. no need to apologize, actually i apologize for all the work that everyone has put into this thread and machine. i will review the chat and the link. i will post back with the results. thank you so much again

According to the motherboard specs, you have a Integrated 10/100 LAN in MCP51G + PHY Realtek RT8201CL network device but the support for it is included in the Nvidia chipset driver package.

Found this thread http://forums.techgu...0143-post8.html which says to get the nForce 430/410 driver from the nVidia web site, but the link he gave no longer has it available. I was able to find it by searching the nVidia web site though.

Download and install it from here: http://www.nvidia.co...nxp32_8.26.html

Hope that finally resolves this one.

Ztruker!!!!!! YOU DID IT!!!!! :woot:

that final link got everything up and running!!! :weee:

i checked device manager and there are no more yellow marks, theres some info next to the green marks that werent there before.

OMG! i really thought it wouldnt be able to be done. but you are very persistant, which i am greatful for.

i'd be making what i feel (although i know its not, but this thread is sooo long and so much work was put into it) mandatory donation. saying that its well deserved would be the understatement of the century.

yes, thers a "but" coming.......

as you know i've been using my sisters computer and she has been paying for internet service and not using it so it was really coming down to crunch time.

i'd been looking on ebay for a cheap pc. of course everything that i found that was cheap was reflected in what i would have been getting (i'm talking $100-$125), 20-40g hard drive, 512-1g of ram, dvd-ROM, not even a writer paired with of course a slow processor.

i had a bunch in my Watching folder and all the good ones kept going way to high for me. then the other day (actually the day before you posted this final link :( ) there was a pc that stood at 116.50 i figured that it would probably go up towards the end of the auction like most do, in that last 30 seconds.

so when it had a minute or so left i saw that it was still the same price and i decided what the hay i'll put in a max bid of $117.50 certainly the leading bidder went higher than that and it turnsout they did.
the thing is that NOBODY and mean NOBODY was going to beat me.....because i accidentally made my max bid to be $117,050!!!!
lol. but i ended up winning it for $130 although i wasnt sure if it would have what i wanted the description wasnt that detailed.

so what i did is emailed the guy telling him of the error that i made but if he were to answer some questions i might be able to get it rather than have to retract my bid.
i asked him about USB's, video card, does it come with a restore cd, or the cd's to reinstall everything should it ever have to be formatted (i would never want to go through or put anybody through what it took to get this pc up again), he said that he would make them if i wanted them, i asked if it has any free slots to add a video card (it does and i have an older, but pretty decent 1 laying around) how many ram slots are open (2 are open) & i asked what kind of system would you say this is best suited for? to me it it seems as though its a custom pc. i was satisfied with his answers so i managed to scrape together (delay a bill) the money and it should be on its way soon.

but i'm still going to be using the one we've been working on, when i can i'm going to get a larger hardrive and a new burner, that was something else that i took into consideration, i have to spend $40 for a hard drive and maybe another $25 for a burner (i'm having trouble with the drawer opening)so getting this made sense. anyhow it'll be great for my docs, movies email etc.. actually i maybe using it more than the other.

heres that "BUT" my donation will be on its way this coming pay, like i said i know its not mandatory but it is VERY much deserved. i just dont know how to go about it when a thread gets closed (and letting you know), could you advise me?

also i'm providing a link to what i won for you to look at (if you wouldnt mind), i googled everything, seems very well worth it, i think the processor is an Extreme edition from around 4-5 years ago (thats the only dual core 3.46ghz one i could find). this pc has windows vista (yuck) so i'll be back because i'd like to install xp professional instead (if thats possible or i could just partition and have two OS going to need help there).

would you like me to run any tests or post anything to make sure all is actually well with my pc (i'm posting from it)?

heres the link, just scroll down because the 1st thing that will come up is bidding ended.

Hot Ziggety :pullhair: Glad that last link got the drivers you needed. No need to see the Belarc report now, but thanks for that info anyway.

There is no need to donate for any help I've provided, but if you would like to then see here: http://www.whatthetech.com/donate/

Is this the computer you got on eBay? Intel Pentium D 3.46 GHz 400GB Nautilus Vista Ultimate

If so it's a lot more of a machine than you've indicated:

Processor Type: Intel Pentium D
Processor Speed (per Core): 3.46 GHz
Processor Configuration: Dual Core
Memory (RAM): 2 GB
Hard Drive Capacity: 400 GB
Primary Drive: DVD+/-RW
Operating System: Windows Vista Ultimate

3.4Ghz is the fastest processor available that I'm aware of.
2GB of ram is okay for Vista though Windows 7 would run better I think. The first upgrade I'd make tp this computer would be to to 4GB (or more) of RAM.
400GB HD is excellent.
It's Dual Core (2 processors) and I'm sure it's 64bit so you could move up to Windows 7 Pro X64 (what I run) at some time in the future or even Windows 7 Ultimate X64 though I don't see anything there that makes it more appealing than the Pro version.
It already has a DVD+/-RW drive so not sure why you think you need to buy a CD burner.

That's a heck of a computer for $130 + shipping.

hi Ztruker,

There is no need to donate for any help I've provided, but if you would like to then see here:

i know that, but man its well deserved!!!

That's a heck of a computer for $130 + shipping.

thats what i thought. when i typed that i would like to get a larger hard drive and that i need a new burner i was referring to the one we've been working, i'm not going to retire it as i've indicated above. i'd need a new burner because the draw has been giving me problems opening up.

aside from being able to increase the ram considerably (i think its 16 or 32? something like that) with a x64 as opposed to a 32bit system are there any other differences?

if it is 64 will i be having a problem running my usual programs or are most compatible for both?

the only thing is that i am not to keen on is learning a new system (vista), that and the fact that it has given so many people problems and had quite a negative following. is windows 7 actually good? would you say its comparable in stability, user friendliness etc as xp or is it starting out as a flop like vista did?
sorry i dont know very much about it.

just a few more things, if i wanted to, could i instead install xp pro? if it is a 64 are there different versions of xp (one for 32 and one for 64) or no?

if i cant just install xp in place of vista (should i decide to) i assume that i could partition the drive and have both OS's on it, is that correct?

and a BIG THANK YOU again!!!!!

With a computer like the new one, stay with Vista or upgrade to Windows 7. Then if you need to run some things that will only run under XP , do so under Oracle Virtual Box or Windows 7 XP Mode as a virtual guest. I do this for my scanner which has no Vista or Win 7 drivers. I run XP as a guest under Oracle VB and use my scanner there. Works very well. The ability to Copy and Paste between the Virtual Guest and Windows 7 makes it even better. I also have Linux Mint, Ubuntu Linux, Windows 98 SE and Windows Pro X86 (32 bit) as available guests that I can run any time I want. You could setup XP Pro as a dual boot with Vista or Win 7, but with free Virtual Machine software available, why bother.

Not to post conflicting information. But, I for one, would certainly recommend against any idea of loading Windows XP 64-bit. Others may have had different experiences, but this was pretty much a flop of an idea Microsoft made. If you are going to install 64-bit, definitely go to Windows 7. And, even then, 64-bit operating systems are still notoriously unstable and problematic. I loaded Windows 7 64-bit on my new machine at home, and basically I live with the little quirks. So, the world still isn't there yet, but we are finally being forced to use 64-bit because of the increase in memory size. Overall, they are becoming a lot more stable because vendors are creating more compatible drivers and software. On any machine that doesn't have MORE than 4GB of RAM, I wouldn't even consider using a 64-bit operating system, no matter what it is for. I've even been known to reload OSes on client machines with 4GB of RAM or less just to install 32-bit so they can have a good running computer without all the hassles.

Nowhere did I say to load XP 64 bit, just Windows 7 X64. I run it at home on my Dell Precision 370 3.4Ghz system which has 4GB of ram as that's the max it will take. I've been running with Virtual Memory turned off for several months now with no problems. The computer he is buying comes with Vista Ultimate but it doesn't say if is 32 or 64 bit.

hey guys, i'm a little confused...
1. do i have a choice in what i run? can i choose either 64 or 32? i know with 32 less ram is recognized, some programs and drivers arent compatible (with 64) and that is where it ends as far as my knowledge.

btw i dont mind get along with 4g of ram.

2. as far as quirkiness/flops etc...is vista still considered an overall flop? have vendors now caught up and have programs compatible for both (xp & vista)?

3. is the gemeral concensus that windows 7 is good?

and lastly...can someone point me in the direction of where i could findout what cards would fit this motherboard? i have looked, but either havent found anything or it didnt make sense to me..

ASUS P5WD2-E series motherboard with Intel 975x chipset

btw appleoddity thank you for the edit in belarc i hadnt realized hiow much info was in that report

thank you in advance

Sorry ztruker. Somewhere I thought I read you had suggested XP 64-bit. But, reading it again, I see you didn't.

1. Choice - yes if the computer has a 64bit processor. As Appleoddity mentioned though, do not load XP 64bit - way to many problems. Vista X64 was good and Windows 7 X64 is excellent, it's what I'm running. 2. Vista - with service pack and all updates it's a decent OS but still a resource hog. The new machine you bought comes with it so I would say stay with it until you can upgrade to Windows 7. 3. Windows 7 - yes, excellent OS. Uses less resources than Vista, runs everything i need except my scanner which I run in XP Mode. Vista and Win 7 will require some getting used to though as they are quite different from XP as far as the User Interface is concerned. Don't fight it though, just go with it and learn to use it, you won't be disappointed. Info on the ASUS P5WD2-E series motherboard: CPU Support: LGA775 supporting the Intel Pentium 4 / EE / D / Celeron (@ 65nm and 80nm) 1066/800/533 Chipset Intel 975x Features: •4 DDR2 DIMMS / Max 8GB / Dual Channel capable •PCIe: 2 – x16 (x8 when both in use) / 1 – x1 / 1 – x4 •2x NIC- Marvell 88E8053 10/100/1000 featuring AiNet2 •ICH7R - 1x ATA133 / 4x SATA-II (RAID 0/1/5/10) •Marvell 88SE6141– 1x ATA133 / 4x SATA-II (RAID 0/1/0+1), 1x eSATA-II (when used SATA_RAID4 is disabled) •Realtek ALC882M HD 8-Channel CODEC with S/PDIF Optical/Copper •Crossfire™ support / Crash-Free BIOS2 / Stack Cool 2 •8x USB 2.0 (4 rear, 2x2 headers) / PS2 (2) / IEEE-1394 (2 headers) What kind of card/cards are you interested in. I can't think of anything that computer you bought from eBay needs. The only thing I would do is bump it to a minimum of 4GB of ram and if you can affor it go to 8GB (why not).

hey Ztruker thank you for the detailed response, although there is a good deal that i have no idea what it means  . i will, at one point or another add ram. i had emailed the guy that has the pc to ask specifics, one of them being what type of video card it has, his response was "the vido card he had went bad and it now runs the intergrated one" i guess that means whats built into the board. i'd be looking for a middle ground type card, not anything to fancy or expensive, something decent though. from what i understand radeon (ati) has some good performers for under $100 (and maybe i could find something cheaper on ebay) i just dont know how to lookf or or find out what the board would take. i do see from the info you posted it support crossfire (i think thats ati or radeon?) but i still dont know exactly what i would be looking for brcause everything doesnt fit all boards. on the pc we were working on i have a pci ex slot open and i tried to put in a video card that i have laying around and it just didnt fit. pointing this out just as an example. thank you

For the new machine, you want a PCI-E (Express) video card. I'm not a hardware type so really have no experience with what is the best video card value. I would estimate something in the $100 to $150 range. For the old one, unless you need it, why spend money on another video card if the onboard card does the job?

My computer is an older Dell Precision 370 built 4/6/2005. It has a 256MB nVidia Quadro FX 3400/4400 PCI-E video card which does everything I need as I'm not a gamer. It handles Windows 7 Aero flawlessly. It has 3 drives (2 SATA, 1 IDE) with about 1TB of space and 4GB of ram.

I would recommend asking these kinds of question in the General Hardware forum.
