Hello again Chazyb,

Please follow the suggestions below and post back and let us know how your system is running after the SFC scan. There will be no report posted on your desktop when the scan is completed, so reboot and see how you go.

kind regards,

Backup/archive/copy

To be on the safe side I strongly recommend that before doing anything at all you check that your back up/archive/copy of all your important data, drivers, files, settings, work, etc is 100% up to date accurate and reproducible, (even if your back up is even only a day or so out of date, it's worth updating it now.)
Also don't forget to check that you have all your application Installation CD's to hand together with the product keys (including those for Windows itself)

Windows Protected System File Checker SFC

Start>Run
type:
sfc /scannow (note the space between the c /)
Have your Win XP installation disc handy as if damaged files are found they will need to be copied across from your disc, if SFC can't find correct copies elsewhere.

Windows XP Installation disc not available or wrong Service Pack - SP1 when SP2 is needed

There are work- arounds to this problem but the easiest, by far is to borrow one and use that. It is perfectly OK to do this, for the purposes of running SFC,and if you ask around all your friends, you are likely to find someone who will be able to help you out.

Hello Chazyb,

What backup software have you been using?

There is Winbackup included in Windows XP if you have no other, but make sure you back up to your external HD to be safe if anything unexpected happens. Go to start > programs and you should see it under Winbackup if you have your programs in alphabetical order......to do this, right click on any of the programs installed and scroll down to "sort by name".

If you need information about image backup such as Ghost or Acronis, please ask. I run both and so am somewhat knowledged about them.

You can run the SFC scan without backing up your system, but that is your decision entirely.

kind regards,

Go to the Manufacturer's website for your Computer Enter your Computer model information. Select Support and downloads. Download and save (without installing) all of the Chipset Drivers appropriate to your operating system. Save these drivers to a folder you can easily find, so that you can get back to them and burn a copy to CD. Do the same for other devices you may have. The most important ones will by your Chipset Drivers. Best Regards

Hi Doug I got and saved the chip set drivers but it also gives me options to save other drivers. I went onto USB driver downloads and it says Downloads File Category: USB Operating System: WinXP SP1 File Title: USB 2.0 driver Palomar PE File Version: 1.0 File Date: 27-5-2003 17:15:00 File Size: 354647 Bytes Technical Note: This is the standard driver for USB 2.0 on the Palomar PE motherboard. This driver only works on Windows XP with Service Pack 1 installed! Please install Service Pack 1 before installing this driver. BUT, I have service pack 2 installed, what should I do please? and should I download the ones for sound, video, modem ect? PS, do I need to download these as well. System BIOS Description Version System Date Palomar PE/PL BIOS CD 4.0 WinXP 23-01-2004 Palomar PE/PL BIOS CD 3.9 WinXP 22-10-2003 thanks chazy

Hi Chazyb, Yes. You should download and save to CD all of the drivers that you indicate. Your Windows XP SP2 is just fine. SP2 "includes" all of SP1. So you are OK with the "standard driver for USB 2.0 on the Palomar PE motherboard." ________________ Windows XP has a Certificate of Authenticity (COA). Usually it appears on a holographic sticker attached to the outside of your computer case. You will need those numbers if a complete re-installation of Windows XP is eventually necessary.

Hi Chazyb,

Since, if needed, you would be installing the chipset drivers and other drivers early in your repair (after Windows is installed, but before the devices are fully functional) it would be recommended to have the drivers on CD rather than on an external HD.

Remember that one of the Drivers that would need to be installed is the USB 2.0 driver for your Palomar PE motherboard.
If the default or legacy USB drivers available via Windows XP are not sufficient to utilize your External Hard Drive, you would have the information saved, but no way to use it.

I'm confused about this:

Also where would I find tthe info about windows that I need to save? I have the sticker on my pc case, will it be stored on the pc disc?.

Seems like you have the required information Product Identification Code, from the Sticker.

Unless you "upgraded" the machine to XP from Windows /98*ME or Windows 2000, the sticker on your case should be referring to your actual Windows XP Product Key.

Hi Chazyb,

Yes the Product Key is often included on a sticker on the envelop that the XP CD comes in.
Sometimes the Product Key is printed on the CD itself
Often times it is only printed on the COA sticker on the case of the machine.
Glad you found it.
It is an 25-digit alpha-numeric sequence.
You should write it down on a piece of paper and store it separately in a safe place.
By safe place, I mean just somewhere separate from the envelope, CD or machine, where you can have it as a second copy.
______________

Here's an informative link that will help you do the actual saving/burning to CD.
