ok this is kinda complicated i guess, just take the time out to listen pls. where to start :S, When I go to Sounds and Audio devices in control panel the thing says no audio device, its actually all greyed out, but in my computer it says i have 2 things as audio stuff.. (Standard Game Port and Unimodem Half duplex audio device). My freind says he has them too.. so i dont know whats happened there. my speakers are wired up correctly and WERE working untill my stupid mother did something, which she cannot recall doing :S, in the system folders or something... I just cant seem to get these things working. throw me questions and ill answer most things ive treid except for putting windows xp disc in i cant find it lol and thats probably what i need to do. another thing is when i start my computer, just as i am about to enter the windows xp starting thing, i get a whole list of drivers in the driver folder in something like system32 etc etc... the drivers come up with the full path and i get about 30 come up, then after it i get the normal windows xp loading thing. i dont know if that has anything to do with it but it might... i need help, and dont want to pay some idiot to fix it when i can do it myself with a bit of help from you hopefully :) thx

Hello Lochy,

...another thing is when i start my computer, just as i am about to enter the windows xp starting thing, i get a whole list of drivers in the driver folder in something like system32 etc etc... the drivers come up with the full path and i get about 30 come up, then after it i get the normal windows xp loading thing.

This sounds like your computer is booting into safe mode. Try this, restart your computer and start pressing the F8 key. Select the "Start Windows Normally" option and see if your issue is resolved.

Once in Windows, go to Start|Run, type msconfig, and press Enter. Click the "BOOT.INI" tab and make sure "/SAFEBOOT" is not selected under the Boot Options section. You may also want to make sure "Normal Startup" is selected in the "General" tab. Please post back your results.

Thanks,

Ax

yup thanks for that. what you have told me to do ive actually recently done the exact thing, it DID start in safe mode constently untill i did that.. but thats not my problem, its sound... i checked off boot.ini and now it doesnt boot in safe mode every time i start up but it still comes up with the full path of the drivers and the resolution is very low. but the computer seems to run fine when i change the resolution :S.. just sound. So thank you for the reply. also, when i try to uninstall the sound audio controller, when i restart, it comes up as new hardware found which is all normal, but when it trys to install itself its a big yellow question mark and it doesnt work in the end after its installed.. i think i need the windows xp disc that could be the whole problems could it be anything to do with directx? i have just downloaded the latest version of it(9.0c). ---------------------------------edit--------------------------------- i just found out that the "Normal Startup" was not selected so ill restart now and post my results: ok, i cannot choose normal startup without the safe boot not on.. and when i uncheck safe boot the normal boot turns off. vice verca :S

Go to Start-->Right-click "My Computer", and choose Properties. Go to the Advanced tab and click "Settings" under Startup and Recovery. For each option in "Default operating system", click the Edit button and post the information here. Alternatively, if you are comfortable with it, you can try removing any "/safeboot:minimal" strings (or the like) from the files as well. If you get to this point, go and try the msconfig "Normal Startup" option mentioned earlier.

Let me know if you have any questions,

Ax

If there are disabled items on the startup of your system, it can affect a whole range of items. We'd like to make sure that this is not the issue first of all. You should only have to click "Edit" and post the contents once, please do this so we can determine what is currently disabled. Thanks, Ax

I'm just an interested Member who has a lot of respect for Ax238. I'm watching and learning. Delays often happen, because of telephone, family, and such obscure things as dinner on the stove. I know I've been managing all those things since starting to follow your thread and a few other threads. Sometimes I'll log into a thread, and then be distracted, or need to consult another thread, leaving it to appear that I'm still actively reading your thread. I apologize if I've caused you any distress. You're in good hands with Ax238. Best Regards Doug

Sorry for the delay Lochy, This will probably be my last post for tonight. If dough is still on, he should feel welcome to assist if further necessary. The reason your drivers are showing on bootup is because of the /SOS. Go to msconfig and change the mode to "Normal Startup". Don't restart at this point. I would like you to change what it says in the file you pulled this information from. Replace it with the following: [boot loader] timeout=30 default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS [operating systems] multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect /NoExecute=OptIn After your replace it, close the file and save when prompted. This will not change the msconfig startup to normal, but it should help get things back that way. Reboot and post back your results. Ax

That's great to hear about the first part, but what do you mean by "could this be it"?
