Hi. It looks as if we've got a bit of work to do. :)

Step 1. - FixWareout

You may want to print out these instructions for reference, since you will have to restart your computer during the fix.

Please download FixWareout from one of these sites:
http://downloads.sub.../Fixwareout.exe
http://www.bleepingc.../Fixwareout.exe

Save it to your desktop and run it. Click Next, then Install. Make sure that Run fixit is checked and then click Finish. The fix will begin - follow the prompts. You will be asked to reboot your computer. Please do so (your system may take longer than usual to load - this is normal).

At the end of the fix, you may need to restart your computer again.

Now lets check some settings on your system.

Click on Start and then Control Panel.
If you are using Windows XP's Category View, select the Network and Internet Connections category otherwise double-click on Network Connections.
Then right-click on your default connection, usually Local Area Connection, and left-click on Properties. Click the Networking tab.
Double-click on the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) item and select the radio button that says Obtain DNS servers automatically.
Press OK twice to get out of the properties screen and reboot if it asks.

Next, click on Start, then Run, type cmd and click OK. A command prompt (black window) will open.
Type ipconfig /flushdns (that space between g and / is needed)
Hit the Enter key, type exit then hit Enter again.

Reboot your computer.

Step 2. - SmitfraudFix

Please download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri)
Extract the content (a folder named SmitfraudFix) to your Desktop.

Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press 'Enter'; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a 'RiskTool'; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between 'good' and 'malicious' use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.
http://www.beyondlog...processutil.htm

Step 3. - Move HijackThis

Your copy of HijackThis is still in a .zip file. Having HJT zipped, it can't create backups, so we must delete this .zip file and re-install HJT again. To do that, please follow the instructions below:

* Please delete your old copy of HijackThis.
* Download HijackThis (self-extracting) to your Desktop.
* Double-click the file, then click the Unzip button.
* Close the window afterwards.

Your HijackThis is now in a permanent folder, and can save backups safely. Please remember that it is now saved in C:\Program Files\HijackThis\

Step 4. - Post Reports

Finally, please post the following, as a reply to this thread (you may need to make more than one post, to avoid cutting off the reports):
  • The contents of the FixWareout logfile (C:\fixwareout\report.txt).
  • The SmitfraudFix report (C:\rapport.txt).
  • A new HijackThis log

Well done, HijackThis is now in the right place and the scans have run properly. There's quite a lot for you to do in this post. It's very important that you follow the instructions exactly and do each step in the order given. If you have any problems, stop and let me know.

Step 1:

First, I need you to download a couple of programs.

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune © from here : http://www.atribune..../click.php?id=1
This is a stand-alone program that does not need to be installed. Save it to a convenient location and make a shortcut on your desktop. Do not use it yet.

Next, download the trial version of AVG Anti-Spyware from here and install it. When the program has been installed, and you click the Finish button, AVG Anti-Spyware will open. Do not run a scan yet.

If the program does not automatically update itself during installation, or you are unsure whether it has done so, please do the following:
  • Click the Update icon at the top and under Manual Update click the Start update button.
  • The program will either update or inform you that no update was available.
You will need to change the following settings:
  • Click the Shield icon at the top and under Resident shield is... click active. This should now change to inactive.
  • Click the Update icon and untick the automatic update option.
  • Click the Scanner icon at the top and then click the Settings Tab.
  • Under How to act? click Recommended actions and select Quarantine from the menu.
You can now close AVG Anti-Spyware. Important: Do not scan yet!

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Step 2:

Run HijackThis and click Scan and then check (tick) the following, if present (don't worry if any are missing):

O17 - HKLM\System\CS1\Services\Tcpip\Parameters: NameServer = 85.255.115.77 85.255.112.159
O17 - HKLM\System\CS2\Services\Tcpip\Parameters: NameServer = 85.255.115.77 85.255.112.159
O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\Parameters: NameServer = 85.255.115.77 85.255.112.159

Close down all programs, browsers and other open windows. Make sure that only the above items are checked and then click on Fix checked.

There are a couple of files we need to delete. We therefore need to make sure that we can see all of your system files:
  • Click Start
  • Open My Computer
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options
  • Select the View tab
  • Advanced Settings: Under Hidden files and folders, select Show hidden files and folders
  • Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (Recommended) option
  • Click Yes to confirm
  • Click OK
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Step 3:

You will need to reboot your computer into Safe Mode for the next steps. Please print these instructions, as you will not have access to the internet.

Important: If you have an always on connection to the internet, physically disconnect that connection until you are finished with Safe Mode and have rebooted back into normal mode.

Boot to Safe Mode. To do this:
  • Restart your computer.
  • Continually tap the F8 button as your computer is booting (a menu appears).
  • Use up-arrow key to select Safe Mode and press Enter.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Step 4:

Click on Start then My Computer and find the following files, shown highlighted in red. Delete any found but don't worry if they're missing.
  • C:\Windows\System32\CSUBC.EXE <-- File only
  • C:\Windows\System32\DMRWP.EXE <-- File only
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Step 5:

Still in Safe Mode, open the SmitfraudFix folder on your desktop and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press 'Enter' to delete infected files.

You will be prompted : 'Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?'; answer 'Yes' by typing Y and press 'Enter' in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.

The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found); answer 'Yes' by typing Y and press 'Enter'.

The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process.
A text file will appear onscreen, with results from the cleaning process; please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.
The report can also be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt.

Reboot into Safe Mode (as above).

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Step 6:

Run ATF Cleaner by Atribune ©. Using this program will remove temporary files, temporary internet files and cookies from your system, which will mean that any scans will run faster.
  • Double-click the shortcut on your desktop to run the program.
  • Under Main, choose Select All
  • Untick Prefetch
  • Click Empty Selected
  • If you use Firefox browser,
    • Click Firefox at the top and choose Select All
    • Click on Empty Selected
    • NOTE: If you would like to keep any saved passwords, please untick that option.
  • Click Exit to close.
  • If you use Opera browser,
    • Click Opera at the top and choose Select All
    • Click on Empty Selected
    • NOTE: If you would like to keep any saved passwords, please untick that option.
  • Click Exit to close.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Step 7:

Close all open windows and then start AVG Anti-Spyware, which you downloaded earlier
  • Click on Scanner on the toolbar.
  • Click on the Settings tab.
    • Under How to act? - make sure that Quarantine is selected.
    • Under How to scan? - All checkboxes should be ticked.
    • Under Possibly unwanted software - All checkboxes should be ticked.
    • Under Reports - Select Automatically generate report after every scan and uncheck Only if threats were found.
    • Under What to scan? - Select Scan every file.
  • Click on the Scan tab.
  • Click on Complete System Scan to start the scan process.
  • Let the program scan your computer.
  • When the scan has finished, follow the instructions below:
    • Make sure that Set all elements to: shows Quarantine
    • Important: Click on the Apply all Actions button (this must done before saving the report).
    • When Ewido has finished, it will display the message All actions have been applied.
    • Then click the Save Scan Report button.
    • Click the Save Report as button.
    • Save the report to your Desktop.
  • Right-click the Ewido Tray Icon and select Exit.
Reboot in Normal Mode.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Step 8:

Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #3 - Delete Trusted zone by typing 3 and press Enter.
Answer Yes to the question "Restore Trusted Zone ?" by typing Y and hit Enter.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Step 9:

Please post, as a reply to this thread (you may need to make more than one post, to avoid cutting off the reports):
  • The Smitfraud report (c:\rapport.txt)
  • The AVG Anti-Spyware report
  • A new HijackThis log

My system is really chugging right now...the modem looks like a Christmas tree with all the lights blinking.

Good job! :)

There's still a bit more to do I'm afraid, but don't despair - we're getting there.

Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop.
  • Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
  • Click the Scan for Vundo button.
  • Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
  • You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
  • Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
  • When completed, it will prompt that it will reboot your computer, click OK.
  • It will create a report named vundofix.txt on your main drive (C:\vundofix.txt)
Note: It is possible that VundoFix may encounter a file it cannot remove.
In this case, VundoFix will run on reboot Simply follow the above instructions starting from "Click the Scan for Vundo button" when VundoFix appears at reboot.

The malware we're targetting here can hide things from HijackThis. To fool the 'nasty' into letting us see the complete picture, we need to rename HijackThis.

Open the HijackThis folder on your desktop. Right-click on HijackThis.exe, select Rename and change the name to NoHiding.exe. Please then open it, scan and post another log.

Please post:
  • The VundoFix report (C:\vundofix.txt)
  • A new HijackThis log (now called NoHiding)

Update Java Runtime:

You are using an old version of Java. Sun's Java is sometimes updated in order to eliminate the exploitation of vulnerabilities in an existing version. For this reason, it's extremely important that you keep the program up to date, and also remove the older more vulnerable versions from your system. The most current version of Sun Java is: Java Runtime Environment Version 5.0 Update 9.
  • Go to http://java.sun.com/...loads/index.jsp
  • Click on the link named Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 5.0 Update 9
  • Click on Windows Offline Installation, Multi-language and save the downloaded file to your hard disk
  • Go to Start => Control Panel => Add or Remove Programs
  • Uninstall all old versions of Java (Java 2 Runtime Environment, JRE or JSE)
  • Reboot your computer
  • Install the new version by running the newly-downloaded file, and follow the on-screen instructions.
  • Reboot your computer
Run HijackThis and click Scan and then check (tick) the following, if present (don't worry if any are missing):

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {3F508AB1-6BBA-C983-6D11-032A0C7AF158} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\nkejwol.dll (file missing)
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {549B5CA7-4A86-11D7-A4DF-000874180BB3} - (no file)
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [qykcscn.dll] C:\WINDOWS\system32\rundll32.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\qykcscn.dll,ztrtgce
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [dmqzc.exe] C:\WINDOWS\system32\dmqzc.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [taskdir] C:\WINDOWS\system32\taskdir.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Windows installer] C:\winstall.exe
O20 - AppInit_DLLs: c:\windows\system32\ldcore.dll
O20 - Winlogon Notify: rpcc - C:\WINDOWS\system32\rpcc.dll
O21 - SSODL: IEFilter - {6CAA625E-CBDC-468D-9C64-51FEEA9C703D} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\IEFilter.dll (file missing)

Close down all programs, browsers and other open windows. Make sure that only the above items are checked and then click on Fix checked.

HijackThis may not remove all of the files relating to the fixed items. We therefore need to check this and delete them if necessary. First we need to make sure that you can see all of the files.
  • Click OK
You will need to reboot your computer into Safe Mode for the next steps. N.B. It would be a good idea for you to print these instructions, as you will not have access to the internet.

Important: If you have an 'always on' connection to the internet, physically disconnect that connection until you are finished with Safe Mode and have rebooted back into normal mode.

Boot to Safe Mode. To do this:
  • Restart your computer.
  • Continually tap the F8 button as your computer is booting (a menu appears).
  • Use up-arrow key to select Safe Mode and press Enter.
Click on Start then My Computer and find the following files, shown highlighted in red. Delete any found but don't worry if they're missing.
  • C:\winstall.exe <-- File only
  • C:\WINDOWS\system32\dmqzc.exe <-- File only
  • C:\WINDOWS\system32\dmzbq.exe <-- File only
  • C:\WINDOWS\system32\IEFilter.dll <-- File only
  • C:\WINDOWS\system32\ldcore.dll <-- File only
  • C:\WINDOWS\system32\nkejwol.dll <-- File only
  • C:\WINDOWS\system32\qykcscn.dll <-- File only
  • C:\WINDOWS\system32\rpcc.dll <-- File only
  • C:\WINDOWS\system32\taskdir.exe <-- File only
Reboot your computer normally.

Please run HijackThis (now called NoHiding) and post a new log.
