HIJACK THIS log, suspicious computer activity

Hi there... my computer's been acting very peculiar for a few months now, but more so recently. I've run S&D, NAV, Ad-Aware, Trend Micro, ewido, SpyWareBlaster, cwshredder, and Windows Defender, but none of them ever come up with anything serious. But my computer continues to take forever to start, sometimes locks on start-up, occassionally just restarts itself, and yesterday was taking a few seconds to register keystrokes.

So I thought I'd check in here. Is there anything going on here? Also, I know I've got a ton of programs running at start-up, so I'm wondering what I can turn off and how I can do it so my computer starts a little faster. Thanks for your help. :)

Welcome to the forum :wavey:

You've got one "unknown" trojan in the log:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Windows Print Spooler] SCVHOSTS.EXE

Let's find where he "lives", then we'll remove him, then work on removing some of the "unnecessary" startup programs....

Copy the text in the following quote box into Notepad:

Save it to your desktop as ff.bat.

CLOSE NOTEPAD.

Now, <double-click> the ff.bat file on the desktop. Wait for a Notepad window to open up.

Please paste it's contents into your next post.

CLOSE ALL WINDOWS (even this one) AND PROGRAMS!!!!
Run Hijack This!
Click "Do a systen scan only".
Then "check" the box to the left of these item(s):

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Windows Print Spooler] SCVHOSTS.EXE

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TkBellExe] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe" -osboot

Then click "Fix checked", and close HijackThis!

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new HijackThis! log file into this thread. :)

Any noticable increase is system speed? :unsure: I had you check "the invisible file" entry, and two other programs that are non essential. I can go thru the log later (when I get home) and look for other "non essential" items if you'd like. :)

Thanks for your help! Start-up is a little slow, but my main concern is making sure I don't have unsafe programs running. Hopefully that trojan is gone. The strange behavior is intermittant, so I won't know for a while if it's stopped or not. One thing that's still happening is NAV Auto-Protect starts disabled, then enables after start-up. I don't know if that's common or not. Regardless, I would like to get some of these unnecessary start-up programs removed, so any advice you can give when you have the time to spare would be appreciated. Thanks again!! :)

Things that you can think about removing:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [WINDVDPatch] CTHELPER.EXE

cthelper.exe is a utility program that is used as an interface by third party software vendors and manufacturers to integrate their software with Creative soundcards and drivers. Normally this process would be left alone, however it has been reported to consume 100% CPU time and cause other system problems. It should be removed from your system, unless you find that doing so causes further problems.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [UpdReg] C:\WINDOWS\UpdReg.EXE

File updreg.exe is associated with Creative Labs software. It is used to remind you to register SB Live product. You can safely remove it from start up list if you don't want to register your SB product.

Applies to the CPQBootPerfDB entry as well. These files generate some kind of server or servlet that attempts to connect with Compaq online. They are like Trojans, but fairly harmless. If you feel comfortable using MSCONFIG, you may want to just disable the ones you are contemplating removing for a while, and use the machine for a while to see how it "behaves" with the changes. If you don't like the behavior, you can easily add it back to the startups.

Another way to help free up resources is to navigate to this folder:

Then, delete all the files in that folder.

Hi there... Still making a couple of these changes, but things seem to already be working better. NAV Autoprotect starts normally now and start-up seems to be faster overall... HOWEVER, I ran CWShredder and it detected CWS.Msconfig. I'd run CWShredder numerous times recently, but this is the first time it discovered anything. I had CWShredder fix it, but then today, when deleting the items in my Prefetch folder, I noticed a prefetch file for msconfig. I deleted it in Safe Mode (along with everything else in my Prefetch folder), emptied the Recycle Bin, ran CCleaner, and ran CWShredder again. I didn't find it, but it made me nervous. Unless I just recently picked it up, CWS.Msconfig had been on my computer for a while before it was detected. What do you think? (Again, any help you're able to give is appreciated.)

I noticed a prefetch file for msconfig


If you used MSCONFIG to temporarily disable some of the items I posted about last, that would explain the file in the prefetch folder.

It's totally unrelated to CWS.Msconfig

Unless you're experiencing redirects or popups, I'd say your "clean".

Try going to:

Start -> Programs -> Compaq Advisor -> Advisor Settings under the "Advanced" tab. See if there is a way to turn it off (the Compaq Advisor), or disable it.

I'm fairly certain that it and this:

O23 - Service: Compaq Advisor (Compaq_RBA) - NeoPlanet - C:\Program Files\COMPAQ\Compaq Advisor\bin\compaq-rba.exe

are related.

Actually, that's one of the things that's strange. I don't seem to HAVE Compaq Advisor. It doesn't come up on my programs list and I have a Compaq Advisor folder in my Compaq folder, but there's no program in there. Inside the Compaq Advisor folder, there's a folder called "bin" and it there's a program called RBALauncher. When I click that, I get a window that says "Compaq Advisor is already running." But I can't access it. Or I don't know how to. It's weird.
