I have run and gotten clean scans on SpyBot S&D AdAware and Norton Antivirus 2004 (logged on as myself).
If I run Norton Antivirus 2004 logged on as "Guest" I get the following error.
"The file C;\Windows\System 32\howiper.exe is infected with the Trojan Horse virus".
Norton cannot clean it up or delete it, and when I try to delete it with Windows Explorer I cannot delete it either.
When logged on as myself (have Admin. Rights) the file is not visible in Windows Explorer.
After running ewido, which initially had many errors which it cleaned, I am left with 3 errors that it can not clean. I don't know if they are related to the howiper.exe problem or not.

My initial difficulties were causing stalls when logging onto windows. Computer would have to be shutdown with Task Manager about 2 out of 3 logon attempts. When successful Internet Explorer would be redirected to unwanted websites.

After cleanups with ewido problems have been greatly reduced but still there.
Guest login on nortons still produces howiper error.

I have attached the Hijack this log and the ewido scan report I have The scan report showing all the errors that it cleaned up if needed.

any help would be appreciated.

You may want to print out these instructions for reference, since you will have to restart your computer during the fix.

Please download FixWareout from one of these sites:
http://downloads.sub.../Fixwareout.exe
http://swandog46.gee.../Fixwareout.exe

Save it to your desktop and run it. Click Next, then Install, then make sure "Run fixit" is checked and click Finish. The fix will begin; follow the prompts. You will be asked to reboot your computer; please do so. Your system may take longer than usual to load; this is normal.

NEXT

Please download the trial version of Ewido Security Suite here:

http://www.ewido.net/en/

Install it, and update the definitions to the newest files.

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
1) Restart your computer
2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4) Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

Then please run Ewido, and run a full scan. Save the logfile from the scan.

Restart your computer in normal mode and please post a new HijackThis log, as well as the log from the Ewido scan.

I downloaded , installed, and ran FixWareout.
I believe it aborted after not finding Autoexec.nt in C:\WINDOWS\system32\AUTOEXEC.NT.
Searching I found 2 copies of it in C:\I386 and C:\Windows Repair.

Here are the files requested:

I downloaded , installed, and ran FixWareout.
I believe it aborted after not finding Autoexec.nt in C:\WINDOWS\system32\AUTOEXEC.NT.
Searching I found 2 copies of it in C:\I386 and C:\Windows Repair.

Here are the files requested:

Reboot.

Try downloading and running wareout again and ewido and then a new log.

If you loose your connection do this

In the windows control panel. If you are using Windows XP's Category View, select the Network and Internet Connections category otherwise double click on Network Connections. Then right click on your default connection, usually local area connection for cable and dsl, and left click on properties. Click the Networking tab. Double-click on the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) item and select the radio dial that says Obtain DNS servers automatically
Press OK twice to get out of the properties screen and reboot if it asks.
That option might not be avaiable on some systems
Next Go start run type cmd and hit OK
type
ipconfig /flushdns
then hit enter, type exit hit enter
(that space between g and / is needed)

Sorry to be so long getting back, I only seem to get at this thing on weekends. Generally after work I'm too burned out.
Since the last installment I installed and am running Spy Ware Guard on the system. It doesn't seem to have caught much though.
As requested:
Ran AdAware: clean
Ran SpyBot S&D: clean
Ran Norton Antivirus: clean
Ran HiJack & deleted the entries per instructions
ReRan HiJack after Restart found:
04-hkcu\..\Run:[LDM] \Program\BaclWeb-8876480.exe returns
ReRan FixWareOut (Log attached)
Reran ewido (Log attached)
Got a lot of new errors with ewido and several Norton Antivirus Notices regarding
The file C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\howiper.exe is infected with the trojan Horse virus and can't repair or delete.while ewido was running.
Although [212], [236], [804] weren't among the errors.

Download Blacklight Beta from here:
http://www.f-secure....light/try.shtml
Hit I accept. It will take you to download page.
Download blbeta.exe and save it to the Desktop.
Once saved... double click blbeta.exe to install the program.
Click accept agreement and Click scan
This app too may fire off a warning from antivirus. Let the driver load.
Wait for it to finish.
If it displays any items...don't do anything with them yet. Just hit exit (close)
It will drop a log on Desktop that starts with fsbl....big number
Please post contents of log.

Download TheKillbox from here http://www.downloads...org/KillBox.zip Save to your Desktop and double click it to open it up. In the 'Enter Full Path and Filename to Delete' box, copy and paste these entries one by one, clicking 'Find and Kill This File' after each one:

c:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\howiper.exe

NEXT

Lets scan these 2 files and see what shows up on them

c:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\csfal.exe

c:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\WBEM\wbemtest.exe

Scan them at the link below. It will only scan one at a time. Then post the log for each please.

Siggyx, I not having too much luck tonight. I downloaded KillBox ok. When I loaded the howiper.exe I couldn't find a 'Find and Kill This File' button, so I clicked on the Button with the red X in it (Delete File). The results are pasted below. The other scanner sight said the csfal.exe file contained 0 bytes. It said the other file was ok. Do you have any opinion on Registry Booster by Uniblue? I scanned the system with it but didn't make any changes, but it found quite a few errors. I couldn't figure out a way to retrieve the list though. __________________________________________________ Pocket Killbox version 2.0.0.648 Running on Windows XP as Ed(Administrator) was started @ Monday, May 29, 2006, 11:21 PM # 1 [Files to Delete] Path = C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\howiper.exe *This File could not be Deleted # 2 [Files to Delete] Path = C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\howiper.exe *This File could not be Deleted __________________________________________________ c:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\csfal.exe The file you uploaded is 0 bytes. Blacklight

Note: While scanning, it is important to observe the following precautions:
Close all browser, program and Explorer windows.
Disconnect from the internet to prevent background programs from autoupdating during the scan.
Do not touch your computer (mouse & keyboard) or have any programs running other than BlackLight

Click Scan
When the scan is complete, press Next
Only rename c:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\howiper.exe if present, even if other hidden items are found
Close all other programs before continuing, and then select Next -> Finish.
Select Restart now to reboot the computer so the changes take effect
After the reboot, the hidden items should be renamed and visible on the computer.
Re-run BlackLight to verify that c:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\howiper.exe is no longer found.

BlackLight beta creates a log file fsbl-<date-and-time>.log in the same directory as the blbeta.exe.
