I had one of those annoying "Your computer is infected, click here to download anti-spyware" windows popping up constantly from my system tools tray. In an effort to fix it I downloaded both Spybot and Adaware, got the latest definitions for each, and let them do their thing. I ran Spybot first with no troubles, rebooted, and ran Adaware. However, upon rebooting after Adaware was finshed, my PC no longer gets to the desktop. It hangs after trying to "load personal settings."

I rebooted in safe mode and ran Spysweeper and Adaware until they didn't find any new results - rebooting between each attempt, but with no luck in fixing my system (although many many things were "cleaned"). Additionally, Internet Explorer no longer functions, instead it just pops an error window anytime I try to use it. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Great

Lets start here:

Please download the trial version of ewido anti-malware 3.5 here:
http://www.ewido.net/en/download/
Install it, and update the definitions to the newest files. Do NOT run a scan yet.

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
1) Restart your computer
2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4) Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

Then please run Ewido, click on the Scanner run a full scan and let it clean everything it finds. Save the logfile from the scan.

Restart your computer in normal mode and please post a new HijackThis log, as well as the log from the Ewido scan.

Ok, ran Ewido, cleaned a bunch of files. My PC now gets all the way to the desktop in normal mode, but there are multiple error windows that pop up along the way, as well as a couple Ewido "Infected object found" windows coming up.

Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Clear "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Show hidden files and folders."
Clear "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Please do not delete anything unless instructed to.

Download the trial version of Spy Sweeper from Here

Install it using the Standard Install option. (You will be asked for your e-mail address, it is safe to give it. If you receive alerts from your firewall, allow all activities for Spy Sweeper)

You will be prompted to check for updated definitions, please do so.
(This may take several minutes)

Click on Options > Sweep Options and check Sweep all Folders on Selected drives. Check Local Disc C. Under What to Sweep, check every box.

Click on Sweep and allow it to fully scan your system.If you are prompted to restart the computer, do so immediately. This is a necessary step to kill the infection!

When the sweep has finished, click Remove. Click Select All and then Next

From 'Results', select the Session Log tab. Click Save to File and save the log somewhere convenient.

Exit Spy Sweeper.

Empty Recycle Bin

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new HJT log as well as the Resullts from Spy Sweeper file into this thread.

Ok, so Spy Sweeper removed some more things, and Windows startup is beginning to look much smoother. A few things that still happen: A black command prompt type window appears right as my desktop icons are loading, it blips around for a moment, then vanishes. Several seconds later, after my desktop is fully loaded and everything seems ready to go, Ewido pops up a window saying "infected object found," with the following information:

I have not yet cleaned this file (figured I'd wait for express instruction to do so).

Also, Internet Explorer seems to be functioning normally now. (it would previously just error out whenever I tried to open it)

How did you get so infected?

1.Click Start > Settings > Control Panel.
2.Next, open Add/Remove Programs and remove if listed:
Spy Sweeper <--It could stop our fix if not removed
Viewpoint Toolbar
Viewpoint Manager

Now Click Start>> Run>> Type in Services.msc and Click OK!

Sroll that list and locate each of the following services. When you find it right click it and Select "Properties">> Click "Stop">> Go up and Change the "Startup Type" to "Disabled"

Windows Service Manager

Now Click Start>> Run>> Copy&Paste the command below into the Open box, and Click OK! If you get an error message ignore it and go to the next line.

sc delete WSCM

Next, launch Notepad (Start>All Programs>Accessories), and copy/paste all the blue REGEDIT below to it
Save in: Desktop
File Name: fixme.reg
Save as Type: All files
Click: Save

Everything is running well at the moment - no strange windows popping up anymore. As to how I got this infected... man I wish I knew. Things have improved significantly though.

Download Avenger by Swandog, and unzip it to your desktop or somewhere you can find it. (Do not run it yet).

Note: This program is for use on Windows XP 32 bit systems only, and must be run from an account with Administor priviledges. If yours is a 64 bit version, do not use it, let me know.

Open a Notepad file by clicking Start > Run and typing Notepad.exe in the box, click OK.

Click Format, and ensure Word Wrap is unchecked.

Copy and Paste all the text inside the box below into Notepad.

Now save the file as RemoveFiles.txt in a location where you can find it.

Files to delete:

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents\Settings\2006.dll

Registry values to delete:

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\Notify | 2006.dll

Start Avenger by double clicking on Avenger.exe.

Check Load script from file:

Click on the folder symbol below and to the right, and browse to RemoveFiles.txt.

Double click it to enter it into Avenger.

Click the green traffic light symbol.

You will be asked if you want to execute the script, answer Yes.

At this point you may get prompts from your protection systems, allow them please.

Avenger will set itself up to run the next time you re-boot, and will prompt you to re-start immediately.

Answer Yes, and allow your computer to re-boot.

Upon re-boot a command window will briefly appear on screen (this is normal).

A Notepad text file will be created C:\avenger.txt.

Copy and Paste it into your next post please, along with a new HJT log.
