I am getting help from shelf life on a problem with my desk top. My brother, however, borrowed my laptop and it came back messed up. My brother said he is not sure where the file came from, but that he was on a website trying to view a video clip and that the file came up with some sound but no picture. He then downloaded a "codec" and the file worked....that is when the problems started. It came back with spyware strike (or something to that effect) on it. I kept getting this little obnoxious bubble in the lower right quickstart menu claiming that my computer was infected and to click a bubble to fix the problem. It kept taking me to their web site. I tried to uninstall the bug via "add/remove". It would uninstal for a short time then the bug would recreate itself. I ran Spybot S&D, Ad-aware, Panda activescan, Norton's online scan and an out of date version on my comp, and Trend micro's house call. They managed to terminate a number of programs, but the little bugger kept comming back. The online version of Norton kept finding adware that none of the others would find. I went into safemode and ran all of the above programs. I thought that I had things fixed but the program came back. I also would randomly drop web pages though out all this mess. I would be in the process of running one of the online scanners when the web page would randomly close. It seemed like I could only have two internet explorer windows open. Finally I got them to run. I then checked the location of the file that online Norton was finding. It was in my "temp" folder. I then rebooted in safemode and deleted everything in the "temp" folder. I then uninstalled by "add/remove" the spyware strike (or what ever it was). At this point I thought things were okay. But now I cannot visit seemingly random webpages. I first noticed the problem when trying to go to Yahoo.com. I could not go to it. I then tried to go to www.dictionary.com. I am getting a message basically indicating that the page does not exist. http://sea.search.ms....dictionary.com I then tried going to www.whitehouse.gov. At first I could not get it, but later I could. There are a few other web pages that I cannot get to at the moment but i cannot remember them. They ARE all webpages that I have visited in the past and may have been sites that were in my history when the bug got me.

PS: The problems seemed to be associated in some manner to mssearchnet.exe I could delete this file and it would reappear. I also think that I read somewhere that the bug injects itself into explorer to prevent detection.

Ran the proggy. No go on the websites. When I try to open www.dictionary.com I get the same thing as before. The sites that I can open do so at a snails pace. When I boot my computer up it takes a while for the icons to go from the stock little thing to the real picture. Also every time I get a little pop-up windows warning saying that my antivius is turned off. Norton then a little while later comes on.

In IE: click Tools> Internet Options> Security> look in the Restricted Sites and see if they're listed.

use Add/Remove Programs and remove / uninstall ewido anti-malware. That should speed things up, let me know.
