Hello

I am brand new to this forum and have very limited knowledge of PCs. I have arrived at this forum through posting a question on the microsoft antispyware forum.

I have been getting alerts on my Norton Antivirus that my computer is infected with howiper.exe virus and Norton cannot repair it. When I run the scan then it reports there are no viruses found. I have downloaded the hjt software and done the scan and saved the log. I hve posted this below.

I hope I have done things correctly - if not apologies but please tell me where I have gone wrong

I would be very grateful for any help

Thanks

Norman

Hello NormanB, Welcome to the forum.

This is what I suggest you do.

Please do not delete anything unless instructed to.

Even if you've already run these, make SURE they're up-to-date and run per instructions.

Make sure you have the up-to-date versions of Spybot V 1.4 and Ad-aware SE Build 1.06 . All are free and available below.

Download Spybot, install and update. Then download Ad-aware, install, and update.

Spybot:

Install the program and launch it.

Go to Start > Programs >Spybot > Search & Destroy and choose Spybot S&D

Close ALL windows except Spybot S&D
Click the button to "Search for Updates" and download and install the Updates.
Next click the button "Check for Problems"
When Spybot is complete, it will be showing "RED" (RED) entries "BLACK" entries and "GREEN" (GREEN) entries in the window
Put a check mark beside the RED (RED) entries ONLY.
Choose "Fix Selected Problems" and allow Spybot to fix the RED (RED) entries.

Ad-Aware FULL SCAN:

Install the program and launch it.

1. Launch Ad-Aware SE and run the WebUpdate feature. (Click on the Globe icon > Click connect > Click OK > Click Finish.)
2. Set up the Configurations as follows:
-- Click the Gear wheel at the top of the Ad-Aware window
-- Click General > Safety & Settings: Check (Green) all three.
-- Click Tweak > Cleaning Engine > UNcheck "Always try to unload modules before deletion".
3. Click "Proceed"
4. Click "Scan Now"
5. Deselect "Search for negligible risk entries" as negligible risk entries (MRU's) are not considered to be a threat.
6. Select "Search for low-risk threats"
7. Run the scanner using the Full Scan (Perform full system scan) mode.
8. When the scan has completed, select Next.
9. In the Scanning Results window, select the "Scan Summary" tab.
10. Check the box next to each "target family" you wish to remove.
11. Click next > Click OK.

Next:

Please download the trial version of ewido anti-malware 3.5 here:
http://www.ewido.net/en/download/
Install it, and update the definitions to the newest files. Do NOT run a scan yet.

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
1) Restart your computer
2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4) Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

Then please run Ewido, click on the Scanner run a full scan and let it clean everything it finds. Save the logfile from the scan.

Restart your computer in normal mode and please post a new HijackThis log, as well as the log from the Ewido scan.

You might need to hold down your CTRL key if you're using a pop-up stopper program to get the downlod to start.

Forgive me if this is a repeat post but I couldn't see that my last message has appeared so I'm trying again When attempting to install the spy bot and then running it with the internet connection off I got a message to say that it was searching for more files then prompted me to connect to the internet. Then a screen from Norton appeared with the message High Risk is - F3HIP.TMP is attempting to connect to a DNS server and is prompting me to block all connections how should I respond

My guess is Norton is blocking it.

I am getting really frustrated now. I have had a reply from the eiwo support and I seem to be doing all the right things but still no success. I decided that in case I had made a mistake in downloading I would install the programme and start again. I've done this and again when I try to run the update there is no response. It is as if the program is locked At the times when a prompt from Norton appears to create an "automatic" then I have done so Is there anything you can advise to check that my norton settings are appropriate if that is what you think is the problem -I'm afraid I don't know anything about firewall settings Thanks again for your help and patience

OK at last some success to report.
A friend called round I explained my problems re downloading the eiwdo updates and he observed that you could download the signatures from a different part of the site - we did this and I hope we've got the up to date signatures that way

I then ran the program and it picked up some 123 infected files!!!!! but interestingly not howiper

I then ran the hijack log again copies are posted below
