Help! I've tried Spybot, adawareSE, spysweeper and none of them show a problem now but I still get Winfixer and other pop-ups even when i'm not on-line. Any help short of wiping and reformating would be appreciated. I had some malware problems a few weeks ago but my anti-malware cocktail removed the threats (Win32 conhook was one, Winfixer another) yet the pop-ups continue - not as bad as before.

Heres my HJT log:

Hello , welcome to the forum

Please print these instructions out for use in Safe Mode.

Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop.
  • Double-click VundoFix.exe to extract the files
  • This will create a VundoFix folder on your desktop.
  • After the files are extracted, please reboot your computer into Safe Mode. You can do this by restarting your computer and continually tapping the F8 key until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode then hit enter.
  • Once in safe mode open the VundoFix folder and doubleclick on KillVundo.bat
  • You will first be presented with a warning.
    It should look like this

    VundoFix V2.13 by Atri
By using VundoFix you agree that you are doing so at your own risk
    Press enter to continue....

  • At this point press enter one time.
  • Next you will see:

Type in the filepath as instructed by the forum staff
Then Press Enter, Then F6, Then Enter Again to continue with the fix.

  • At this point please type the following file path (make sure to enter it exactly as below!):
    • C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\IIIHF.DLL
  • Press Enter, then press the F6 key, then press Enter one more time to continue with the fix.
  • Next you will see:

Please type in the second filepath as instructed by the forum staff
Then Press Enter, Then F6, Then Enter Again to continue with the fix.

  • At this point please type the following file path (make sure to enter it exactly as below!):

    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\FHIII.*

This will be the vundo filename spelt backwards. for example if the vundo dll was vundo.dll you would have the user enter odnuv.*
  • Press Enter, then press the F6 key, then press Enter one more time to continue with the fix.
  • The fix will run then HijackThis will open.
  • In HiJackThis, please place a check next to the following items and click FIX CHECKED:

    O2 - BHO: ATLDistrib Object - {659E147E-BD03-4605-988C-AA6D7EA497CA} - C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\BYXYA.DLL (file missing)

    O2 - BHO: ATLDistrib Object - {93C6313C-9DB4-4694-8BD0-E378C573A9AD} - C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\IIIHF.DLL

    O4 - HKLM\..\RunOnce: [*IIIHF] rundll32.exe C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\IIIHF.DLL,CreateProtectProc rerun

    O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control Panel present

  • After you have fixed these items, close Hijackthis and Press any key to Force a reboot of your computer.
  • Pressing any key will cause a "Blue Screen of Death" this is normal, do not worry!
  • Once your machine reboots please continue with the instructions below.
Download and install CleanUp!

Open Cleanup! by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from the Start > All Programs menu).
Set the program up as follows:
Click "Options..."
Move the arrow down to "Custom CleanUp!"
Put a check next to the following (Make sure nothing else is checked!):
  • Empty Recycle Bins
  • Delete Cookies
  • Delete Prefetch files
  • Cleanup! All Users
Click OK
Press the CleanUp! button to start the program.

It may ask you to reboot at the end, click NO.

Then, please run this online virus scan: ActiveScan

Copy the results of the ActiveScan and paste them here along with a new HiJackThis log and the vundofix.txt file from the vundofix folder into this topic.

OK, LDT, here they are. Vundofix did not run according to instructions. Activating it did not lead to the step by step process you escribed but ran through a bunch of DOS screen commnads, finished and opened HJT. I followed instructions from that point but I did nopt have the options you envisioned.

Here's Activescan:

Not sure that fix works on windows ME.

It looks like you have items unchecked in Msconfig.
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\msconfig.exe /reminder

click Start> Run> type in Msconfig tap enter key.
look in the Startup. Make a note of the items you want to keep unchecked.
Now I want you to put a check on ALL items.
Exit Msconfig. DO NOT reboot.

Scan with HJT and post a new log.

We need to try this again.
Make sure you run it in SAFE MODE.

    R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - ~CFBFAE00-17A6-11D0-99CB-00C04FD64497} - (no file)

Trying to do over, friend. Running into problems. First, the Vundofix folder has no killvundo.bat file. It has a killvundo file that looks like it loads a DOS program. Also, the readme file in the vundofix folder says this application won't work for windows ME, have to use DOS to remove vundo. When I try to run killvundo i get a warning about running a DOS program in safe mode. When I do so anyway I get a DOS screen that has wording similar to what you state but does not allow me an option of entering the specific file lines you want. I think the ME config might be messing us up here. I hate Windows ME. Other ideas? Do you want me to tell you the specific wordings of the screens or do you know why this is happening? Thanks for hanging in.

I suggest you print this out.

Restart your computer in Safe Mode.

Press the F8 key until the startup menu appears.

Choose the Safe Mode option then press Enter.

I suggest you do this:

use Add/Remove Programs and remove:
surfmonkey

Run hijackthis. Hit None of the above, Click Do a System Scan Only. Put a Check in the box on the left side on these:

R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - ~CFBFAE00-17A6-11D0-99CB-00C04FD64497} - (no file)

O2 - BHO: ATLDistrib Object - {93C6313C-9DB4-4694-8BD0-E378C573A9AD} - C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\IIIHF.DLL

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ELNKProxy] C:\WINDOWS\surfmonkey\smproxy.exe

O4 - HKLM\..\RunOnce: [*IIIHF] rundll32.exe C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\IIIHF.DLL,CreateProtectProc rerun

Close ALL windows and browsers except HijackThis and click "Fix checked"

Delete these Files if listed:
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\IIIHF.DLL
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\FHIII. <--Any with this name.

1. Open My Computer
2. Right click on your hard drive that you wish to clean (C drive, for example)
3. In the context menu that opens, select properties
4. Under the general tab you should select Disk Cleanup
5. Windows will scan your drive which will take a few seconds/minutes
6. A box will display the various files you can remove.
Check all boxes except compress old files (If listed)
7. Click OK and windows will comply.

Restart your computer.

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new log file into this thread.
Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.

LDtate, when do you sleep? OK, at this point I'm going to go step by step with you. Start//Settings//Control panel//add/remove programs does not show surfmonkey as a program that can be removed. Surfmonkey is the parental control file for Earthlink. I did a Start//search and found the root files. Do you want me to delete them? I suggest they are harmless. Your call. Should i delete and continue with your instructions or leave them alone and continue with your instructions? FYI - I've had my eye on the R3 URLSearchHook (no name) file in HJT as a host but was afraid to do anything. Also the ActiveScan log I sent you on Jan 12 shows a virtumonde not disinfected file named C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\vtust.dll. Thats the badboy that Adaware SE idendified as a Win32 conhook malware but could not delete when I started having problems. Adaware hung up when i tried. I tried quarantining and then deleting it and now adaware shows no signs of it but it looks like it never left. Next steps? What is a forum god?
