Running Win XP and have run Lavasofts Ad-aware SE and Norton AV. Tried procedure for removal on Symantec site but still can't get rid of this. Let me know what you want me to do and logs to post.

There's a new version of HijackThis.

Please delete any HijackThis Folders and Files you have now.


Please download this self extracting file to your My Downloads folder or My Received Files (dependent on your Operating System):

here

Click the "Save" button.

Navigate to My Documents>Chose My Downloads or My Received Files folder once inside that folder click "Save".

Now go to the folder you saved HijackThis_sfx.exe in.

Double click HijackThis_sfx.exe and select Unzip. When done click "OK".
Close the WinZip self Extractor window.

Open HijackThis and select: Do a system scan and save a log file.

When the scan is finished, Click Edit> Select All> Edit> Copy> and paste its contents here [Add Reply].

Please download Please download MsnVirRem.zip
and save it to your desktop. Once in place, right click the zip file, and extract the files to your desktop. DO NOT RUN ANYTHING YET


Restart your computer and boot into Safe Mode by hitting the F8 key repeatedly until a menu shows up (and choose Safe Mode from the list). In some systems, this may be the F5 key, so try that if F8 doesn't work.


In the new MsnVirRem folder, that you should have on your desktop, double click MsnVir.bat and let it run its course. A DOS window should pop up, Let it run until it disappears. It will take time.
After it disappears, reboot back into normal mode, and post a fresh HijackThis Log.

I suggest you do this:

Run hijackthis. Hit None of the above, Click Do a System Scan Only. Put a Check in the box on the left side on these:

F3 - REG:win.ini: load=C:\WINDOWS\system32\nusgoz\csrss.exe
F3 - REG:win.ini: run=C:\WINDOWS\system32\nusgoz\csrss.exe
O4 - Startup: csrss.lnk = ?

Close ALL windows and browsers except HijackThis and click "Fix checked"


Delete this File if listed:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\nusgoz\csrss.exe <--From this directory ONLY.

Delete this Folder
C:\WINDOWS\system32\nusgoz


1. Open My Computer
2. Right click on your hard drive that you wish to clean (C drive, for example)
3. In the context menu that opens, select properties
4. Under the general tab you should select Disk Cleanup
5. Windows will scan your drive which will take a few seconds/minutes
6. A box will display the various files you can remove.
Check all boxes except compress old files (If listed)
7. Click OK and windows will comply.

Restart your computer.

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new log file into this thread.
Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.

Ran system scan and checked those you said It asked to delete three items and I said yes. HJT came up with the following error; "Unexpected error occurred! Error #52 (Bad file name or number) in Sub GetLongPath(?.exe). Please send a report to merijn@spywareinfo.com, mentioning what you were doing, and what version of Windows you have. This message has been copied to your clipboard." Next it said could not delete O4 - Startup: csrss.lnk = ? I could not find the nusgoz folder even by unchecking "Hide system files" I did the clean up as requested and took a long time deleting "temporary 3°" files. The clean up stopped with the error; cleanmgr.exe application error unknown software exception (0xc00000fd) in application at 0x60e91da8 Rebooted pc and it now cannot start windows as can't find <windows root>\system32\hal.dll asked to reinstall copy of file That is a far as I can go. Getting kind of worried now.

Open HJT and click on View list of backups.
Put a Check on what we just deleted and restore them.

Reboot and post a new HJT log.

We'll need to try and kill this another way.
The infection you have is a nasty one.

The problem now is that I cannot get past the "can't find hal.dll" message which is the first thing that comes up. I can't get into the PC at all now.

Will it boot in Safe Mode? Are you posting from another PC?

The problem is with my son's PC. I am posting from mine. I tried safe mode but the same message comes up and cannot get any further.

Some of the infections going around now, can kill the PC when trying to clean it. Do you have your windows CD.

Here's what to do: 1.Insert and boot from your Windows XP CD. 2.At the first R=Repair option, press the R key 3.Press the number that corresponds to the correct location for the installation of Windows you want to repair. 4.Typically this will be #1 5.Type bootcfg /list to show the current entries in the BOOT.INI file 6.Type bootcfg /rebuild to repair it 7.Take out the CD ROM and type exit
