Any time I click on the Windows Update button, my entire computer freezes. I've even tried to access it through the Microsoft website, and it does the same. The window will open like it's trying to access the site and it just stays there.

Go to My Computer > Control Panel > System In the dialog box that comes up, write down everything that shows under the 'System' and 'Computer' heading (we don't need any of the 'Registered To' information). Post that information as a reply to this thread.

Ok, the first thing to do is cleanup to make sure a corrupted file isn't interfering with the process. The easiest way to do that is to use a couple of free tools.

First, create a new folder on your desktop with a memorable name such as 'HijackThis'. Next, download HijackThis and unzip it to the new folder you just created.

Click the 'Do a system scan only' button. In the list that comes up, look for the section that has entries starting with the number 016. In that section look for any entries with 'WUWebControl Class' in the parenthesis and/or windowsupdate.microsoft.com as part of the internet address (URL) displayed. Place a check mark next to any you find and then click 'Fix Checked'. DO NOT remove anything else with HijackThis as you could damage your system.

Download and install System Security Suite(you will want to shut down all other programs before running System Security Suite so you will be ready to reboot).

Set it up like this:



Click the "Clear Selected Items" button and accept the reboot option.

When the reboot is done, vist Windows Update and see how things work. You should be prompted by the site to download a control (thats what was deleted by HJT).

I'm posting the HJT file because I didn't see anything that started w/016 that had WUWebControl Class, or windowsupdate.microsoft.com as part of the URL. I also downloaded the other program and ran it. Windows update still freezes when I try to access it. Did I do something wrong?

Your log looks ok but it is missing the windows update control. which is supposed to be automagically downloaded fromt the site (after prompting you to allow it). Run System Security Suite, click the BHO tab and let me know what you see there. How many other programs are you running, i.e. how many icons in the tray and what percent of memory does task manager (ctrl + alt + del > then Performance tab, Physical Memory(K) total: available:). Also, go to Start > Control Panel > Internet Options > Security tab Click the restricted zone icon then the sites button. Make sure you don't see windows.com in there. Next click the internet zone icon, click custom level, at the bottom dropdown choose medium and click the reset button next to the box, click the reset button even if it says medium in the box already. Let us know what you find out and if things improve. Also, when you say the computer freezes do you mean the whole computer locks up or just Internet Explorer?

I can't exit the window unless I do ctrl + alt + del. I appreciate your help!

Sorry it took so long to get back to you.

I'd like you to check a couple of services and make sure that they are running. Go to Start>Run and in the box type services.msc and click ok.

Look through the list of services for the following names and make sure that it says 'Started' in the status column for them.

Automatic Updates
Background Intelligent Transfer Service.

If either is not running, highlight it and then click the 'Start" link that appears on the left.

You are missing the windows update control, lets get that installed.

Download the control and save it to your desktop. Make a new folder (right click and choose New > Folder). Drag iuctl.cab into the new folder.Once iuctl.cab is in the new folder, right click it and choose "open".
Select all the files shown and click "Extract"
Make sure you are extracting them to the new folder and click ok.
In the extracted files, right click iuctl.inf and choose "Install"
When the install finishes, try visiting windows update again.

I've tried going through IE and also going to the Microsoft website and it pops up the window like it's trying to connect and then never does. I have to hit Con-Alt-Del to get out of it.

I still don't see the windows update control listed in your log. When you performed the steps outlined in this post what was the result? Did you get any error messages or did the install go ok?

THe install seemed to go ok. However, I did not see an inf. file to install.

The file named iuctl that has no extension, its description is "Setup Information". Right click it and choose "Install". After that is done try the windows update site again.

Actually, I had already done that, but I did it again to no avail! Do you have anything else I can try?
