Hello Is it advisable to use this to send a file from one pc in my house to another or has security been compromised? It would convenient rather than going to the main pc to write information to save but not at the risk of intrusion. Thank you

Hey Peter1, I would suggest you try a form of portable media storage such as a CD or USB Memory "Stick" (Drive) for easy and secure means of transporting files between computers

not sure what you mean by

has security been compromised?

do you think it's compromised? have you recently had malware on any of your pc's?

if all your computers are clean of any malware then i don't see any problem with using file sharing between pc's on your home network running behind a router.

i'd suggest reading this and it's links :- http://windows.micro...tures/homegroup
use every bit of security you can, change the default name for the group, use file permissions/passwords etc.

like you said makes life a lot easier than to keep getting up and transferring them manually from pc to pc.

If you are moving data between computers in your house, they are all behind your routers hardware firewall, so yes, it's safe. The ports used for Printer & File Sharing are not exposed outside of your small home network.

Great, that's what I wanted to hear. Now I can learn how to do it as I found the tutorials.
I'll be trying to get that MS link to you.

Hello I hope others will benefit from this brief message. Although Windows promotes file sharing one must have time synchronization but more importantly, the WLAN partition must be disabled. As this will not allow internet access with the router enabled , it is back to flashdrives for file transfer for me. Peter

sorry i don't really understand your last post peter,
as far as i'm aware you can file transfer between a pc connected wireless and one connected by wire to your router with no problems,
so i'd think if your having a problem it's probably because your missing a setting or two somewhere,

maybe this will help :- http://helpdeskgeek....t-to-homegroup/

not running any windows pc's so can't tell you how to setup workgroup/homegroup etc for file sharing but it is definitely possible between wired and wireless pc's connected to the same home network router, and also with a bit more difficulty between 2 separate home networks/ routers.

Terry I had a nice prntscrn but it would not upload. It was a picture of a Win article stating you had to disable the WLAN etc. Then Belkin's coment about no internet if you do. I am getting dizzy with the restrictions. I am going to use teamviewer and relax. Anyway, thank you for your continued help Peter Read #3 below. 3. If you are using a wireless network through a wireless router, then check to make sure that WLAN Partition is disabled in the router's wireless settings. When it is enabled, it prevents associated wireless clients from communicating with each other. (see screenshot below) NOTE: This screenshot below is from a D-Link DIR-855 wireless router. You will need to look at your router's manual for how with it.

I don't believe this for a minute. Do you have some links to the web articles talking about this?

As I mentioned in your thread about sharing, dump Homegroup and switch to WORKGROUP. Then everything works like it did with XP. I even told you what I did to set this up.

first to put pics in a reply..

what you need to do is upload them to a free site that hosts them for you,
i use myalbumbank :- http://www.myalbumbank.com/index.php
photobucket :- http://photobucket.com/ is a popular one too.

after you've uploaded them you will find links to it that you can then use in your replies here :- example :-

looks like this when just pasted into my post :- Posted Image

and if you click on it, it'll take you to the full sized pic.

now regarding file sharing, find links to these instructions your following so we can see where your going wrong,
it's really not that hard to setup and you'll realise this the second you have it working,

but sometimes it just seems harder than it really is, especially when we're not 100% sure what's happening.

i know from experience using linux...
you should see some of the pickles i get myself into, that could have been sorted in 2 minutes flat instead of the hrs it takes me.

Terri I have used Photobucket but I emptied my attachments here and It did upload so I hope when I click reply it will be visible. It is the statement about the WLAN which I don't get except Belkin said not to do it. Photobucket makes it ez and thank you. Z-I will work with you on this. The reason I was doing the homegroup was because I watched the Windows videos so I could do it by myself and it stated you must have both pcs with win 7 which I do. And it stated this WLAN business. They said this homegroup is easier than the older way of working with Workgroup but I don't see homegroup working at all. However, I know you know your way around and I do not believe all I read about their sources. So I will see if I can share files with your help. That is why I am here. Btw, I would like to cite the source of the prntscrn for you. So, I know you had told me what to do but; 1-I did not make note of it as I was told to use homegroups by the Win videos and 2-did not really understand some of what was said. I hope to be back with the source of the prntscrn and I hope you will let me know where to begin with this task of file sharing.

Z I found the note with the 1st prntscrn sent to me by a friend and scrolled to the top of the page. This where she must have gotten the 1st prntscrn. I could not follow it further as I did not know how. Perhaps you could if interested. Peter

not having a win7 pc i can only give you links to follow, one thing i did notice was this..

Note

In Windows 7 Starter and Windows 7 Home Basic, you can join a homegroup, but you can’t create one.

http://windows.micro...start-to-finish

just follow the step1, step2, etc tabs to set it up.

first setup a homegroup on the pc with the folder of data you want to share,

then go to the other pc to find and join the homegroup you just setup.

if the 2nd pc can't find the homegroup you've created then post back here with more screenshots of what your seeing, errors etc.

Hi Terri I have Win 7 Home Premium which is supposed to work but thanx for the heads up. It is funny because those are the very steps I followed. I was hoping Ztruker was going to help me through a workgroup but if he hasn't responded, I will give these steps another try and get back to you. it is very nice of you to stick with me and maybe we can work it out together. It could be a fun project. ;) Talk soon Peter

>>>Terri - So after doing step one on the desktop, I do step 2 on the laptop?? Also, there is a page for advaced choices about which dots to select for network discovery, file and printer sharing, passwords etc. When do I set it up and is it the same on both pcs?
Peter
