Hello,
I was directed here from the Virus forum. We did an ATF Clean and a Malware scan and came up with nothing. Essentially I'm getting some errors in Office 2010 and Chrome. Here's the last post from my thread...

Computer seems to be running the same as before. Overall well, but with these errors.
I've been getting another one in Outlook...

"Outlook could not create the work file. Check the temp environment variable."

When I tried to reinstall Chrome, I got a "Windows - Application Error" that says "The application was unable to start correctly (0xc0000135). Click OK to close the application." I click ok twice and it goes away but Chrome won't load any sites.

Sorry, this is getting really far away from viruses and malware. But I appreciate the help.

Essentially:
- Programs loading and bringing up strange errors in warning windows.
- Google Chrome all of a sudden doesn't work at all
- Outlook started bringing up an error about temp files not being found. Mail crashes.
- Copy pasting into Paint crashes Paint.

Can someone help?? Thanks!!

That's good to hear, but 10 munutes is a pretty short time frame...... test it for a few days and see if its still OK after at that time (you should do a few complete shutdowns during the test to make sure that all is well.)

If after a few days of testing all is still well with MS Office then you can move on to the other system problems.

Start with running the System File Checker...here's how:
http://www.sevenforu...le-checker.html
test for a few days and then us know if there is any improvement?
Also at that time test Internet Explorer 8...any difference?

I will continue testing Office. So far so good. But I need to figure out what's wrong with Chrome. I'll run the System File Checker. I can run Internet Explorer 8 but I won't be able to detect a "difference" because I don't use IE8. Update: just ran system file checker and everything was fine.

Well, I was just running it and it crashed on me. Started to run really slow and couldn't handle opening several tabs. Again, I don't use it so it may be behind on Flash and Shockwave plugins. I got another error on Outlook again. Same one as above.

Hi, it looks like you have serious problems with your machine... You can try and deal with each one of the problems in a piecemeal way, but this will be a time consuming and resource hungry ( lots of work for you.... or you can adopt a more radical approach. Some areas for you to consider: 1 As a top priority you should check your back up/copy/archive, make sure its 100% accurate complete, reproducible and kept safe on removable media.......... You should not do anything else with your computer until this has been done and you are sure that everything that is important to you is copied and safe. Check that all serial number keys, Installation discs or executable files are included together with a note of your user names, passwords etc, don't forget the disc for all your applications and for Windows itself. 2 If you have a disc image of your "perfect computer system" kept safe on removable media, and made when your machine was in top form then maybe its best to re-image now...you will be up and running with all faults corrected in less time than it takes to walk the dog! 3 If you don't have a disc image then you can adopt a piecemeal approach starting with uninstalling all your troublesome applications and rebooting after each one, performing a disc clean up and then reinstalling a single application and testing it thoroughly for a few days before moving on to the reinstallation of the next product. Before you start this process you may like to do a Repair installation of Windows to ensure as far as you can that you are operating from a "level playing field" Be advised that this should not affect your data files (but the full back up is still a wise precaution, as things can go wrong!) but it will leave you with lots of updating to do....probably a few hours worth. 4 Formatting your boot drive ( which clears/removes everything) and then reinstalling Windows, and all your applications, updating everything and then copying back your data files usually guarantees to resolve the majority of "Windows problems" providing your hardware is OK. Although it will take a little time its probably quicker than the other routes (except for re-imaging) and usually can be totally completed in less than a working day...however the reimaging is by far and away the quickest option ( Item 2 above) taking only a short while... I tried going back to a previous restore point and the system told me it couldn't do so because it found an error that might be associated with my antivirus program. But when I disabled my antivirus, it still gave me the error. Now I'm really confused. As far as reinstalling Windows, I already installed from the copy of Windows 7 that I purchased a while ago and it's a once only installation like all Windows installs so there's no way I can reinstall it and I refuse to pay for another one. That's ridiculous. I don't know why they only let you install it once. I'm lost.... :(

More importantly perhaps, can you give me some idea how this could have happened in the first place? What did I do wrong? Or what could I have done to create this problem??

Hi, I had a look at your logs over in your recent malware topic and its pretty clear from them that you have installed at some time P2P File sharing programs........There are legitimate uses for P2P File sharing, but a lot that I come across are used for the downloading of files,(especially music, videos, games etc) that breach both National and International rules on copyright. There is currently a major crackdown on folks who use File Sharing to break copyright rules and heavy penalties are being imposed......often it's the young folks who are tempted to do this, their parents often being unaware, but it might be as well to check that your machine is squeaky clean in this respect, just to be on the safe side.

File sharing is a well known vector for the distribution of malicious code and large numbers of machines are infected by this route, the effects can be devastating and sometimes a format and reinstall of the operating system is necessary...... In addition it is said that otherwise malware free files are "seeded" with extra code in an attempt to create problematic system performance and persuade folks that files with an unproven provenance can make for big trouble......For these reasons I recommend that you uninstall all P2P file sharing or similar applications, utorrent. etc. In addition any files that you have downloaded via utorrent etc where the provenance is not 100% are best deleted and the recycle bin emptied.

Making a disc image is a wise move and highly recommended when your machine is running well again and in its "perfect state" Win 7 has its own built in imaging facility or otherwise Acronis, Ghost, Paragon are good( paid for versions) or free versions are available from here:
http://www.thefreeco...pandimage.shtml
Its always best to take your first full disc image when you know that your machine is running fast and sweet, with all appropriate Windows updates installed, with no virus or malicious elements present, with junk files deleted, all unneccessary or unwanted applications removed, fully defragged and with updated anti virus, firewall and anti spyware protections in place. Remember , if you make a disc image of an "infected or badly running system and then use it to reimage your hard drive you are just making things tough for yourself as the problems will just be propogated....

However, subject to the above paragraph if, at the moment, you do not have a disc image kept safe on removable media, then I recommend you make one immediately.......In the event that you hit serious trouble that cannot be resolved in a timely or cost effective way by the usual means, then you will be able to reimage and have your machine up and running in less time than it takes to walk the dog!
