I guess I contracted some malware. A WTT Forum God was helping me with that in "Internet Security 2010 - System Scan - Security Warning - Worm.Win32.N" I wasn’t using anything with audio at the time, but since the contraction I haven’t been able to get sound on anything – no bootup themes or sound with my DVD playing in MediaCenter. I have other problems with my MediaCenter that I have to pursue, but for this lingering symptom that resulted from the malware, LDTate had me follow up here.

In the other forum I wrote: "When I use the volume buttons on the front of the keyboard, the volume indicator that pops up shows up indicates that the volume is at max. When I put a DVD in and it comes up with no sound, I go to the screen volume "buttons" and the same thing - it's at max. I think I used to have a volume feature in the tray/task bar, but I don't see one now. And when I clicked on the windows symbol in the upper left hand of my MediaCenter, to see what options I could get, I got the window "ehshell.exe - Common Language Runtime Debugging... Application has generated an exception that could not be handled. Process id=0xa20 (2592), Thread id=0x240 (576). Click OK to terminate the application. Click CANCEL to debug the application" next window "ehshell.exe - No debugger found. Registered JIT debugger is not available. An attempt to launch a JIT debugger with the following command resulted n an error code of 0x2 (2). Please check computer settings. cordbg.exe !0xa20 Click on Retry to have the process wait while attaching a debugger manually. Click on....." Then when I get rid of the window a crash reports begins generating. The error messages seem to be something that I had before the malware. I think. I have an Angel TV tuner that has been having increasing problems over the last year, and It will be my next problem to fix on this site. However, the no-volume problem started exactly when the malware started.

"I think I used to have a volume feature in the tray/task bar, but I don't see one now." So, I don't think I have mistakenly put the sound on mute.

Your Plug and Play service is probably turned off. Please try the following: set the startup type for Plug and Play to Automatic. To do so, follow these steps: 1. Click Start, click Run, type services.msc and then click OK. 2. Double-click Plug and Play. If you receive a Configuration Manager message, click OK. 3. In the Startup Type list, click Automatic, and then click OK. 4. Close Services. 5. Restart the computer.

Hi kapusta,

First thing to do is to check in Control Panel - Sounds and Audio Devices Properties
On the Volume(tab) be sure that "mute" is not checkmark/ticked and "place a volum icon in the taskbar" is checkmark/ticked.

If You do not find an Audio Device listed, then it will be necessary to reinstall your existing Audio Device.

You describe additional TV Tuner Cards and DVD utility. Both of them are most likely "dependent" upon your Audio Device to provide audio output.

It will help us to help you more accurately if we know what Hardware and Software your machine has installed.

Please consider running the following inventories:

D-A-L Hardware Scan - http://www.d-a-l.com/hardwarescan/

PCPitstop Full Tests (OverDrive) http://www.pcpitstop.com

Run each of the above and post a link to your Results from both Tests.

Best Regards

When I go to Sounds and Audio devices
(1) Mute is NOT checked
(2) "Place a volume icon in the taskbar" is NOT checked.
When I click that box I get a window:
"Windows cannot display the volume control on the taskbar because the Volume Control program has not been installed. To install it, use Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel."
OK

When I hit the scan button on "D-A-L Hardware Scan - http://www.d-a-l.com/hardwarescan/"
I got the message "Testing for compatability....."
and then all my Mozilla windows closed.
I tried it again and the same thing happened

When I follow your link “PCPitstop Full Tests (OverDrive) http://www.pcpitstop.com”
The choices are: Optimize, Driver Alert, Exterminate, Disk MC, Erase.
No “overdrive”. Which one do you want?

or

If I search on “PCPitstop overdrive” and follow that link, there is a posting about OverDrive, but when I click “OverDrive – Full Tests” in the left margin next to the writeup…
there is an area near the top that says “In just a few minutes OverDrive creates an extensive report…” but there is no button near it, but a link for you to Create FREE Account.
Should I create a FREE account?

Anyway....

Tried to add IE8 reboot Loading the pitstop utility..... It went "Done" but I did not get the security certificate. Went to the "troubleshooting" page. "You have not yet loaded the PC Pitstop utility. If you have already tried....." "....follow the instructions HERE." "3. Incorrect IE Security Settings: Your Internet Explorer security may be set so that you cannot accept ActiveX controls (PCPitStop's utility is an ActiveX control) or do not have JavaScript enabled The default IE security settings will ask you whether you want to accept controls rather than blocking them. To restore the defaults in Internet Explorer, follow these instructions. " "Medium security level is sufficient for use with PC Pitstop, and you can get to that setting by clicking the Default Level button. " Tools - Internet Options - Security So I changed the level from Medium High to Medium and same message: It went "Done" but I did not get the security certificate. (I had already disabled my ZoneAlarm.) "You may encounter a bug in IE where the browser will sometimes show the Medium setting but will not actually use the proper settings for the Medium security level. In that case, click the Custom button and set each individual security setting as shown in the picture at right. " My custom settings were already at what was pictured. troubleshooting page: "If you are using IE6 or IE7 and are continuing to experience a loop when trying to load the PC Pitstop utility, go to: Tools | Manage Add-ons | Add-ons currently loaded in Internet Explorer and also | Add-ons that have been used by Internet Explorer and verify that all Active X add-ons from PC Pitstop are enabled. " Huh? I will try that later. You may also want to check our ActiveX test page to see if your ActiveX support is functioning properly. "Please uninstall or temporarily disable these applications. " "If you see the message ActiveX is not supported, then your browser doesn't recognize ActiveX at all. Netscape, Opera, or other browsers usually do not support ActiveX. " I see the message ActiveX is not supported.

I know the last posting is kind of scattered. It was kind of late. I hope it makes sense. For the holiday weekend I will only be gone for dinner. The rest of the time I will be in my apartment with the only TV or DVDs available: the ones I play on my laptop. It will be a sad, quiet, lonely "vacation" without any TV or movies. Will there be anyone to help?

By the way, my no-audio problem started (along with a host of other problems) when I mistakenly hit Allow instead of Deny on my Zone Alarm when malware "Internet Security 2010" showed up.
