Dear Person:.... The following is from another thread... ""I occasionaly return to WTT to learn & pick up pointers to keep my comp running smoothy..... On this one & a few other threads , I noticed others suggest a program called "Erunt".... I have it installed on this unit.... However , I can find no info as to how to "use" it...ie, how do you do a back-up using "Erunt" etc.... I found tons of info as to where to get it , download it , etc , but no "User Manaul" type help.... I hope to never have to "back-up" , but if (More realisticaly "when") I do , I'd like to know how to do it with "Erunt"...""

Ron, Windows Explorer is in Start / Programs / Accessories. You can also use My Computer which is actually Windows Explorer, but doesn't show the Folder pane by default, you have to click on the Folders icon, then you will be in two pane mode, with folders on the left and files and sub folders on the right. This is the default view when you open Windows Explorer directly.

I normally create a shortcut to Windows Explorer and place it in the Quick Launch area of the Task Bar. That way it's handy when needed. The easiest way to do this is to navigate to Start / Programs / Accessories in My Computer, then right click on Windows Explorer and select Send to. Chose Desktop as the target. Close My Computer then right click on the Windows Explorer icon that should now be on your Desktop and drag it to the Quick Launch area of the Task Bar then release the button. Select Move here.

If you start ERUNT and do a manual backup, you will see that the default location for storing backups is C:\WINDOWS\ERDNT.

To restore, just navigate to that location then chose a restore that you named (manual backup) or open Autobackup then choose the date you want to restore to, open that folder and double click on it's ERDNT.EXE file. Take all defaults and follow instructions. Reboot when done and the restored registry will be active.

Edit: Ron, fyi, I just updated the ERUNT link to include the above data so hopefully that will make it easier for other ERUNT users.

Ztruker:.... OK , I found 'Windows Explorer"....Erunt files.... You aint going to believe what I got....So here it is.... [attachment=3850:Erunt_data.jpg] That is only a SMALL portion of what's there.... I've run Erunt twice & could not find a back-up date..... I can not find a folder for it.... When I start Erunt , it says that folder does not exist & would I like one created...I click "yes"..... Have NO clue where it's at.... Later....

Ron, it sounds like you did not allow ERUNT to place an entry in your Startup folder when you installed it. If that isn't there then ERUNT DOES NOT run when you boot and there are no registry backups.

The easiest way to fix this is to reinstall it and this time, when it asks if you want to Create an ERUNT entry in the Startup folder, click Yes. The GeeksToGo tutorial says to click No, which I strongly disagree with.

g. Say No to the portion that asks you to add ERUNT to the start-up folder, if you like you can enable this option later.

There is no easy way to enable this later without manually adding an entry to your Startup folder that looks like this:

C:\Program Files\ERUNT\AUTOBACK.EXE %SystemRoot%\ERDNT\AutoBackup\#Date# /noconfirmdelete /noprogresswindow

As you can see, it's not ERUNT.EXE that gets added to the Startup folder, it's AUTOBACK.EXE. Not intuitive or obvious from the documentation.

I will update the WTT Tips entry to specify that the user click Yes instead of No at that point.

The major advantage of using ERUNT is that it can automatically backup your registry. By default it keeps about 30 days of backups. Disabling this cripples one of it's best features.

You can run it manually now, just keep clicking Yes or OK and it will complete. That way you will at leaast have a backup as of right now.

Ztruker:.. OK , I've uninstalled it & reinstalled it per your instructions.... I'll wait a few days for it to do it's thing & let you know what happens... Methinks that I may have a newer version than what you are working with , if memory serves me right , the graphics appear different....No matter , as long as it works.... Erunt is not working like I've been led to believe.....I have 5 screenshots ......
I'm going to go thru step by step.....Here's the first one===>

This is what I get when I first open up Erunt...In the Back up box there's todays date....To the right of that box is a smaller box with 3 or 4 "-" in it.....When I click on the small box I get this..===>

You'll notice that 5-20-09 & 5-21-09 are missing...& AutoBackup is listed....
When I click on 5-19-09 I get this===>

Now, I was under the impression that Erunt would back-up automatically on boot-up...
It doesn't appear to be doing that....
Also , I would like to know "how' to use the back-up part of this program in the event I need to....
A "HELP" box from Erunt would've been GREAT to have.... ..

Ron, the automatic backups are under C:\WINDOWS\ERDNT\AutoBackup. Manual backups are placed in C:\WINDOWS\ERDNT and you get to specify the subfolder name. For instance, on my computer, I've only created one manual backup: [attachment=3876:noroxio.png] while in the AutoBackup folder I have 15 backups: [attachment=3877:erdnt.png] I limit ERUNT to 15 auto backups (default is 30) with a parameter added to the Startup folder entry as follows: D:\ERUNT\AUTOBACK.EXE %SystemRoot%\ERDNT\AutoBackup\#Date# /noconfirmdelete /noprogresswindow /days:15

Reffering to the 2nd attachment in post for 5-21-09 at 12:12 PM., I clicked on AutoBack-up to get all those dates shown above...
It appears that the AutoBack-up IS working after all...It shows every date & there seems to be legit data attached to each date...
Now , my limited computer knowledge is telling me that to execute a back-up , I would click on an earlier date & let Erunt do it's thing....
Is THAT correct???
IF SO , we got this tiger by the tail....(OR Alligater in your case.. )

Ron, I think you just discovered what I told you in my previous post:

As for restoring your registry, yes, you would pick a date prior to the problem occuring, open that folder and start the erdnt.exe it contains.

Note: You DO NOT do this from ERUNT. You do this from My Computer or Windows Explorer.

Start either one. Navigate to C:\Windows\erdnt\AutoBackup. Open the folder for the date you want to restore to, then double click on the erdnt.exe file in that folder. It will walk you through the restore of the registry. When done, you reboot and the restored registry is in place and active.

On my desktop there's an icon for Erunt...
I click on open file & ALL the attachments in all the posts except May 17 2009, 03:16 PM are from that method....
The attachment for May 17 2009, 03:16 PM IS what I get when I open Windows Explorer...(It actually says "My Documents" at the top & not Windows Explorer)...

In the above attachment , when I open Erunt___Files is when I get all those goofy graphics shown in Post dated May 17 2009, 03:16 PM....I can NOT find either of your 2 attachments shown below!!!

My problem appears to be locating those folders...

You are still looking in the wrong place. I said to navigate to C:\Windows\erdnt\AutoBackup. You went to C:\Program Files\ERUNT ... wrong place. That's where the program is installed, not where it saves the backups.

You don't start ERUNT unless you want to create a manual registry backup. You don't use it to find existing backups or restore a registry backup. You do all that via My Computer or Windows Explorer.

Try this:

• Right click on Start and select Explore
• Scroll down till you see Windows and click on the + sign
• Scroll down and click on the + sign in front of ERDNT
• Click on AutoBackup

You should now see a folder for each registry backup ERUNT has made.

That worked perfect !!!....One last question (I hope!!).....When I click on "AutoBackup" & a string of dates pop up , do I pick out a date from the list , & click on it for a restore to that date?? & (Sorry , another question) Does it walk me thru it or does it do it automatically as the Windows version does??
