:pullhair: Hello again…my internet used to connect almost immediately..now it can take up to two min to connect. I am running an amd thunderbird 1G with 1G of ram. I have recently bought spysweeper and it came with windowswasher..both seem pretty potent..I have NIS 2009 and spywaredoctor also as well as spybot and Ad-aware. None of them seem to find any malware, but I just have a gut instinct there is something there. My last hijackthis log is posted below…I hope someone can help get my internet connection speed back to where it was. It could also be a memory issue as spysweeper and windowwasher seem to be memory hogs but even with then disabled the connection is still very slow…… Thanks :notworthy:

Hi, and Welcome to WhatTheTech :)

Apologies in the delay in a response. We are overwhelmed with logs at the moment and there aren't enough helpers to go around. If you still require help, please do the following:

Please download DDS and save it to your desktop.
  • Disable any script blocking protection
  • Double click dds.scr to run the tool.
  • When done two logs should open:
  • DDS.txt
  • Attach.txt
  • Save both reports to your desktop.
—————————————————
  • Post the contents of the DDS.txt report in your next reply
  • Attach the Attach.txt report to your post by scrolling down to the Attachments area and then clicking Browse. Browse to where you saved the file, and click Open and then click UPLOAD.
Please describe how your computer is behaving at the moment, listing any symptoms and problems that you are experiencing.

Thanks.
 Hey JPShortstuff…I know downloading that DDS.scr is probably an automated response..but before I download it I would like to know what it does…when I googled it some of the posts were that it is malware or there is malware out there with that name…would u mind explaining what it is and what it does…then I will down load it… thanks Bellestarrr
Hi, DDS is a completely non-invasive tool that makes no changes to your computer. All it will do will provide us with two logs giving information about your computer with which I can analyse and check for any Malware on your system. Think of it like HijackThis but a bit more in-depth. I can ensure you that it is entirely safe. Cheers.
:pullhair: Hi JP… here is what i got when i ran dds.scr never did produce two log files but this came up in dos box FINDSTR:CANNOT OPEN TEMP01 EDS.EXE:CAN'T READ TEMP 00:PERMISSION DENIED AND THEN ABOUT 20 ENTRIES OF SAME ITEM EDS.EXE:CAN'T READ TEMP00: PERMISSION DENIED AND THEN IT JUST SAT THERE??? I disabled script debugging in internet options under advanced…didnt find it anywhere else?? B.S.
Hi,

Give this version a go:
http://www.techsupportforum.com/sectools/sUBs/dds/

If that's still no good, give the following instructions a try instead.
  • Download random's system information tool (RSIT) by random/random from here and save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on RSIT.exe to run RSIT.
  • Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
  • Once it has finished, two logs will open. Please post the contents of both log.txt (<info.txt (<
I may not be around to reply over this weekend but I will do my best. Just letting you know.

Thanks.
Hey JP here are the logfiles you requested from the last tool RSIT….thanks for checking them out! The babe killer stuff looks bad?? :smack:

Hi,

The babe killer stuff is fine - that entries you saw were preventing babe killer stuff from loading on your computer.

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
Download - ATF Cleaner»
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

(If you use FireFox or the Opera browser
To keep saved passwords, click No at the prompt.)

It's normal after running ATF cleaner that the PC will be slower to boot the first time or two.

Theres a few programs on your machine that I recommend you uninstall.

Please click Start >> Control Panel >> Add or Remove Programs.
Find each of the below items on the list and click remove on each one.
Java™ 6 Update 2
Java™ 6 Update 3

Also, remove any programs on this list that you don't use/need. Its good to clear these out to free space and resources. Reboot your computer once you have removed the above and anything else you wish to remove.

Installing Java:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 12.
  • Scroll down to where it says "Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 12, The Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation, Multi-language and save it to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially any web browsers.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u12-windowsi586.exe to install the newest version.

You have a Webroot Firewall which is unnecessary as Norton includes a Firewall. You shouldn't run more than one Firewall as they conflict with each other and , as you mentioned, can slow down your system. I notice that it is disabled at the moment, but if you aren't going to use it then there's no reason to keep it.

Let's have a check for any Malware although your logs look OK. If this comes back clean, we can look elsewhere for the cause of slowness.

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.
  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform full scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location.
  • The log can also be found here:
    C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\log-date.txt
  • Or at C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\log-date.txt
  • Post that log back here.
Please also post a fresh HijackThis log.

Thanks.
Thanks :notworthy: JP….will do all that and also uninstall some stuff to see if we can get a little leaner. Gonna take me couple days as have a leaky sprinkler system to work on in the yard next couple days but thanks for the tips.this is cool stuff!! appreciate it

The webroot is spysweeper only no antivirus or firewall(that I'm aware of)…those were an upgraded price. Home web page (google) is loading faster now but not instantly…probably 20-30 sec.
Thanks B.S. :woot:
This is IE right? I am curious. Please click Start >> All Programs >> Accessories >> System Tools >> Internet Explorer (No Add-ons). If things are still slow in that, then we know its not a problem with IE or its plugins/extensions.

Is it just your Internet that seems slow or is the computer generally a bit slow?

On a network? Any other computers using it? Do they experience the same problems?
 When i did what u said…internet no add ons..it is lightning fast almost instant loading of pages and very fast moving between web pages….guess its the tool bars and addons that are slowing it down..this is an old system 1G processor and 1G ram..good enough to do what I want. Spysweeper and some of the other antispyware if you leave them in memory hog almost all the 1G memory along with XP that could be a big part of it too..but yes in IE no addons very fast. Can I surf with that??…I see my Norton Identity protector didnt seem to fill in the passwords necessary to log into some of the sites..the dialog box to add them didnt even come up in that mode. The computer is generally not slow unless a memory hog is operating..not on a network(that I know of)..I see the malware bytes got rid of 1 malware…dont know for sure if it was there or a false positive?? Thanks JP we are getting places…B.S. :notworthy:
Well, the first thing to do would be to look at some of the add-ons/plugins you have and decide whether you need/use them. Things like:
Cooliris
Yahoo Toolbar

Do you use these? If not, consider getting rid of them.

I don't see why you couldn't surf with IE Safe Mode all the time, but it seems like a bit of a "cop-out" solution. I mean, if you are going to use Safe Mode you might as well get rid of all the extensions anyway.

I am suspicious about whether Cooliris is part of the cause for this myself, I am not completely familiar with it but it sounds like it has the potential of being a bit of a hog.

MalwareBytes' did find something, it looks like it was a very mild trace of something bad - it would have picked up a lot more if you were genuinely infected with that. Have you had any full infections that other things have cleaned recently/at all? If so, it could be just a leftover.

Cheers.
