I was having issues with a constant "security alert" that informed me that my computer was infected (scareware, as I learned), so I came to the site to see what I could do. I'd tried a few free spyware programs before I got Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and, after running that and restarting my system, it seems the security prompt bug has disappeared, but now whenever I press a key on my (laptop) keyboard, the cursor freezes in place. This makes it a bit of a problem to log in here on that computer where I have the Malwarebyte and HijackThis logs stored, as I cant use the keyboard to log in to email or this forum. Does anyone have any idea why pressing a key on the keyboard would freeze the cursor in place? Thanks.

EDIT: Also, the keyboard is entirely unresponsive as well.

Hi, and Welcome to WhatTheTech :)

Apologies in the delay in a response. We are overwhelmed with logs at the moment and there aren't enough helpers to go around. If you still require help, please do the following:

Please download DDS and save it to your desktop.
  • Disable any script blocking protection
  • Double click dds.scr to run the tool.
  • When done two logs should open:
  • DDS.txt
  • Attach.txt
  • Save both reports to your desktop.
—————————————————
  • Post the contents of the DDS.txt report in your next reply
  • Attach the Attach.txt report to your post by scrolling down to the Attachments area and then clicking Browse. Browse to where you saved the file, and click Open and then click UPLOAD.
Please describe how your computer is behaving at the moment, listing any symptoms and problems that you are experiencing.

Thanks.
Thanks for getting back to me. The laptop is still freezing the cursor in place whenever i press a key on the keyboard. The keyboard seems to be nonfunctional as well (dtrl+alt+dlt doesn't do anything, for instance, or any other keys I try and press). My ability to input text is limited to copy/pasting, which slow as it is, seems to be working fine.DDS (Ver_09-02-01.01) - NTFSx86 Run by [removed] at 13:14:16.69 on Wed 02/18/2009 Internet Explorer: 6.0.2900.5512 Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition 5.1.2600.3.1252.1.1033.18.2047.1239 [GMT -7:00] AV: Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition *On-access scanning disabled* (Updated) ============== Running Processes =============== C:\WINDOWS\system32\Ati2evxx.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost -k DcomLaunch svchost.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe -k netsvcs C:\Program Files\Intel\Wireless\Bin\EvtEng.exe C:\Program Files\Intel\Wireless\Bin\S24EvMon.exe svchost.exe svchost.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\ccSetMgr.exe C:\Program Files\Lavasoft\Ad-Aware\AAWService.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\spoolsv.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Apple\Mobile Device Support\bin\AppleMobileDeviceService.exe C:\Program Files\Bonjour\mDNSResponder.exe C:\Program Files\Symantec AntiVirus\DefWatch.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe -k HTTPFilter C:\Program Files\Intel\Wireless\Bin\RegSrvc.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe -k imgsvc C:\Program Files\iPod\bin\iPodService.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\wscntfy.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\Ati2evxx.exe C:\WINDOWS\Explorer.EXE C:\WINDOWS\Logi_MwX.Exe C:\Program Files\ATI Technologies\ATI Control Panel\atiptaxx.exe C:\Program Files\QuickTime\QTTask.exe C:\Program Files\iTunes\iTunesHelper.exe C:\Program Files\Lavasoft\Ad-Aware\AAWTray.exe C:\Documents and Settings\ABS\Local Settings\Application Data\Google\Update\GoogleUpdate.exe C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\NOTEPAD.EXE C:\Documents and Settings\ABS\Local Settings\Application Data\Google\Google Talk Plugin\googletalkplugin.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\SNDVOL32.EXE C:\Documents and Settings\ABS\Desktop\dds.scr ============== Pseudo HJT Report =============== uSearch Bar = uSearch Page = mWindow Title = Microsoft Internet Explorer presented by Comcast uInternet Settings,ProxyOverride = *.local uSearchURL,(Default) = hxxp://www.google.com/keyword/%s mSearchAssistant = BHO: Spybot-S&D IE Protection: {53707962-6f74-2d53-2644-206d7942484f} - c:\progra~1\spybot~1\SDHelper.dll BHO: SSVHelper Class: {761497bb-d6f0-462c-b6eb-d4daf1d92d43} - c:\program files\java\jre1.5.0_06\bin\ssv.dll BHO: PDFCreator Toolbar Helper: {c451c08a-ec37-45df-aaad-18b51ab5e837} - c:\program files\pdfcreator toolbar\v3.0.0.0\PDFCreator_Toolbar.dll TB: {BA52B914-B692-46c4-B683-905236F6F655} - No File TB: PDFCreator Toolbar: {31cf9ebe-5755-4a1d-ac25-2834d952d9b4} - c:\program files\pdfcreator toolbar\v3.0.0.0\PDFCreator_Toolbar.dll TB: {2318C2B1-4965-11D4-9B18-009027A5CD4F} - No File TB: &Yahoo! Hi,

You need to disable TeaTimer, so that it doesn't interfere with our fix.

This is a two step process.
First step:
  • Right-click the Spybot Icon in the System Tray (looks like a blue/white calendar with a padlock symbol)
  • If you have the new version 1.5, click once on Resident Protection, then right-click the Spybot icon again and make sure Resident Protection is now Unchecked. The Spybot icon in the System tray should now be now colorless.
  • If you have Version 1.4, Click on Exit Spybot S&D Resident
Second step, For both versions :
  • Open Spybot S&D
  • Click Mode, choose Advanced Mode
  • Go to the bottom of the vertical panel on the left, click Tools
  • Then, also in left panel, click Resident shows a red/white shield.
  • If your firewall raises a question, say OK
  • In the Resident protection status frame, Uncheck the box labeled Resident "Tea-Timer"(Protection of over-all system settings) active
  • OK any prompts.
  • Use File, Exit to terminate Spybot
  • Reboot your machine for the changes to take effect.

Please download OTMoveIt3 by OldTimer.
  • Save it to your desktop.
  • Please double-click OTMoveIt3.exe to run it. (Note: If you are running on Vista, right-click on the file and choose Run As Administrator).
  • Copy the lines in the codebox below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose Copy):

    :reg
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbar]
    "{BA52B914-B692-46c4-B683-905236F6F655}"=-
    "{2318C2B1-4965-11D4-9B18-009027A5CD4F}"=-

    [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Explorer Bars\{32683183-48a0-441b-a342-7c2a440a9478}]

    :driver

    :files
    c:\windows\system32\998.exe
    c:\windows\system32\winlogon2.exe

    :Commands
    [emptytemp]
    [Reboot]

  • Return to OTMoveIt3, right click in the "Paste Instructions for Items to be Moved" window (under the yellow bar) and choose Paste.
  • Click the red Moveit! button.
  • Copy everything in the Results window (under the green bar) to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy), and paste it in your next reply.
  • Close OTMoveIt3
Note: If a file or folder cannot be moved immediately you may be asked to reboot the machine to finish the move process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes. In this case, after the reboot, open Notepad (Start->All Programs->Accessories->Notepad), click File->Open, in the File Name box enter *.log and press the Enter key, navigate to the C:\_OTMoveIt\MovedFiles folder, and open the newest .log file present, and copy/paste the contents of that document back here in your next post.

Please also post a fresh DDS log (just DDS.txt). Let me know if there is any change to your computer's performance.

Thanks.
Thanks again. I'm still having the same issue with the keyboard. ========== REGISTRY ========== Registry value HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbar\\{BA52B914-B692-46c4-B683-905236F6F655} deleted successfully. Hi,

Please run OTMoveIt again, but this time use the following script:
:services
gtermddo

:commands
[emptytemp]
[reboot]

Your Java Runtime Environment is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update.

Updating Java:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 12.
  • Scroll down to where it says "Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 12, The Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation, Multi-language and save it to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially any web browsers.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u12-windowsi586.exe to install the newest version.
Please run this online scan, using Internet Explorer with Administrator priviledges (Vista users right-click and select Run As Administrator…):

Panda Activescan
  • Once you are on the Panda site, click the Scan now button
  • When prompted to install ActiveX control click Install
  • On the update page, click on the security warning at the top of the page and select "Run ActiveX control…"
  • Panda should now start scanning your system.
  • When the scan completes, if anything malicious is detected, click the Export To…(with a little notepad icon) button, then Save the report to a convenient location.
Post the contents of the Panda scan report, along with a new HijackThis Log.

Download the GMER Rootkit Scanner. Unzip it to your Desktop.

Before scanning, make sure all other running programs are closed (including this browser) and no other actions like a scheduled antivirus scan will occur while the scan is being performed. Do not use your computer for anything else during the scan.

Double-click gmer.exe. The program will begin to run.

**Caution**
These types of scans can produce false positives. Do NOT take any action on any
"<— ROOKIT" entries unless advised!

If possible rootkit activity is found, you will be asked if you would like to perform a full scan.
  • Click NO
  • In the right panel, you will see a bunch of boxes that have been checked … leave everything checked and ensure the Show all box is un-checked.
  • Now click the Scan button.
Once the scan is complete, you may receive another notice about rootkit activity.
  • Click OK.
  • GMER will produce a log. Click on the [Save..] button, and in the File name area, type in "GMER.txt"
  • Save it where you can easily find it, such as your desktop.
Post the contents of GMER.txt in your next reply.

Thanks.

Thanks.
Thanks again. The SystemLook scan doesn't seem to be working with that code for some reason. I am still having the same issues with the keyboard. Hi, Your logs look pretty clean to me. Are you having any other problems apart from the keyboard issues? I'm not sure there is any Malware involved, but I will ask for a second opinion from my colleagues. I may well have to send you over to our Tech Team though, as they will be more able to troubleshoot non-Malware related problems. I will post back as soon as I have heard back from my colleagues. Thanks.
Oh, and no, there are no other noticeable problems. As I said before the issue began after I ran MalewareByte and restarted the system, so I thought it was somehow spyware/malware related. Before I ran that and other spyware/antivirus programs the computer would deliver a prompt telling me that the computer was going to shut down (after 30 or 60 seconds or something). I was also receiving intermittent security prompts from the taskbar that, when clicked, would try and send me to a scareware site. And again, the problem I'm experiencing now is that whenever I press any key on the keyboard, both the cursor and keyboard become unresponsive/frozen. Other than the everything else seems to be running smoothly (other than that the desktop displays a blue background instead of the usual desktop background picture).
