[Resolved] Search Settings 1.2 reported by CA as Trojan Horse

I have been working for several days to free up some hard disk space on my aging machine. Had just finished uninstalling Adobe Pro 6.0 and installing Adobe Standard 8.0 when Computer Associates (CA) notified me that "Search Settings 1.2" had begun to install and was a known trojan. I clicked "kill it" and the response was affirmative. However, for the rest of the day, every time I change directories or try to go to the Control Panel or open IE, I get the same message … "Search Settings 1.2" "Preparing to Install" and then "Please wait while …(we …somebody) configures your system" …etc. It eventually winds up being unable to install the file because the .msi can't be located in ~temp.

I have run full anti-spyware and virus scans by CA, downloaded and run Malawarebytes Anti-Malware, first in full mode (took 7 hours?), then updated the program, and did a quick scan, both times with 0 infections found.

I see "SearchSettings" in the HiJackThis file, but no boxes are checked and I'm unsure how to proceed although some of those messages look interesting / promising. "If in doubt, RTfM or ask someone who knows." :notworthy:

Thanks in advance for your help!

Please note that all instructions given are customised for this computer only, the tools used may cause damage if used on a computer with different infections.

If you think you have similar problems, please post a log in the HJT forum and wait for help.

Unless informed of in advance, failure to post replies within 5 days will result in this thread being closed.

Hi SusanT

I'm Gary R, I'll be glad to help you with your computer problems.

Before we start: Please be aware that removing Malware is a potentially hazardous undertaking. I will take care not to knowingly suggest courses of action that might damage your computer. However it is impossible for me to foresee all interactions that may happen between the software on your computer and those we'll use to clear you of infection, and I cannot guarantee the safety of your system. It is possible that we might encounter situations where the only recourse is to re-format and re-install your operating system, or to necessitate you taking your computer to a repair shop.

Because of this, I advise you to backup any personal files and folders before you start.

Please observe these rules while we work:
  • Perform all actions in the order given.
  • If you don't know, stop and ask! Don't keep going on.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
  • Stick with it till you're given the all clear.
  • Remember, absence of symptoms does not mean the infection is all gone.
  • Don't attempt to clean your computer with any tools other than the ones I ask you to use during the cleanup process.
If you can do these things, everything should go smoothly.
  • If you're using XP, you'll need Administrator privileges to perform the fixes. (XP accounts are Administrator by default)
  • If you're using Vista, it will be necessary to right click all tools we use and select —-> Run as Admistrator

It may be helpful to you to print out or take a copy of any instructions given, as sometimes it is necessary to go offline and you will lose access to them.

OK, couple of things to take care of, then we'll need to give your computer a good looking over to see there's nothing else hiding on it.

First

Run a scan with HJT and when finished check the following items (if found).

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customize/…//www.yahoo.com

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customize/…//www.yahoo.com

R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customize/…//www.yahoo.com

R3 - URLSearchHook: SearchSettings Class - {E312764E-7706-43F1-8DAB-FCDD2B1E416D} - C:\Program Files\Search Settings\kb127\SearchSettings.dll (file missing)

Question: I see you have CA installed as your Anti-Virus, I also see several entries for Symantec. Have you used Symantec as your AV programme in the past. Are these remnants from an earlier install, or do you still have some Symantec programmes installed ?

If they're remnants they'll need removing, if you've got 2 anti-virus programmes, then one needs removing or you'll have problems.

Let me know and I'll give you details once we've cleared you of your infection.
Hi Gary,

You help is much appreciated.

Question: I see you have CA installed as your Anti-Virus, I also see several entries for Symantec. Have you used Symantec as your AV programme in the past. Are these remnants from an earlier install, or do you still have some Symantec programmes installed ?

I am now using only CA. Symantec was a hog and took forever to load. I deleted the remnants from the register.
Question: My machine is 6-7 years old, with a miniscule 18.6 gig hard drive. I've added an external drive, but am now faced with
trying to have enough room just for the OS and programs. I'm down to 3.96 gig, and want to know if there's somewhere I can go to find out if there are other files that can safely be removed.

The LOGS you requested follow in three separate replies.

Thanks again,
SusanT
Gary, it looks like I will only need this and one more, not 2 more replies to post the logs you want. Gary,

Thanks again. I'm working much easier. If you can point me in the right direction to continue cleaning my hard drive, it would be wonderful. -Susan T

Doesn't look like you're clear yet. Some of your "Search Settings" entries have returned. I suspect it's CA that's returning them.

First

Disconnect your computer from the internet, then disable the Real Time Protection for CA. You usually do this by right clicking on the CA icon in your taskbar (bottom right corner of your screen) and selecting from the menu.

I don't use this programme, so if you need more detail let me know and I'll get them from one of the helpers that use it.

Next

  • Double-click OTMoveIt3.exe to run it.
  • Copy the lines in the codebox below.
:Files
C:\Program Files\Search Settings
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared

:Services
Symantec Core LC
  • Return to OTMoveIt3, right click in the Paste Instructions for Items to be Moved window (under the yellow bar) and choose Paste.
  • Click the red Moveit! button.
  • Copy everything in the Results window (under the green bar), and paste it in your next reply.
  • Close OTMoveIt3

Next

Run a scan with HJT and when finished check the following items (if found).

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customize/…//www.yahoo.com
R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - {E312764E-7706-43F1-8DAB-FCDD2B1E416D} - (no file)

O23 - Service: Symantec Core LC - Unknown owner - C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\CCPD-LC\symlcsvc.exe

Now close all open windows and click Fix Checked to remove them.

Reboot your computer (this is important)

Re-enable CA, if notified of any changes, please allow them.

Next

Run a new scan with HJT and post me the log please.

Summary of the logs I need from you in your next post:
  • Latest OTMI log
  • New HJT log

Please post each log separately to prevent them being cut off by the forum post size limiter.

PS. I'll get back to you on freeing up disk space once we've got rid of the unco-operative remnants.
Hi Gary,

I'm stumped. I followed your instructions but am still seeing that "Search Settings" is in the HJT log. I ran through the procedures you gave me twice. :pullhair:

INFO: 1) My husband and I are networked here. I unplugged the connection so was removed from the Network and the Internet. I ran an HJT on his machine but no instances of Search Settings were reported.

2) As you'll see from the OTMI logs, Symantec Core could not be removed. I looked at the Administrator Services in the Control Panel, and it says they are "stopped".

1st Run of OTMI:

NOTE: 3) I then ran the HJT, following the instructions, "FIXED" the offenders you mentioned. Ran the HJT again, and they were still there.

4) Went back and ran MOVE IT again:

Gary, here's a PS: I did a search of the registry for "searchsettings" and found the following keys still involved. You've only given me part of the data I need to successfully remove the other Registry settings.

Download RegSearch by Bobbi Flekman.
  • Create a folder in your C: drive C:\Regsearch, and extract all the files from the zip archive into that folder.
  • Double click regsearch.exe to launch the programme.
  • Copy/Paste the following into the Search Box SearchSettings
  • Click OK.

Regsearch will now search your Registry for the required strings, when it is finished it will open a Notepad file RegSearch.txt, saved to the Regsearch folder.

Copy/Paste that file into your next post please.
Gary, Here's the output from RegSearch. I have not compared it to my manual search. (I didn't think, when we began this, that you and I would be beginning a new carreer, but it is beginning to look like that ..at least for me.) Thanks for all your time. OK, lets have one more go with OTMI, if that doesn't work then there's other tools we can try. I did make a mistake with the earlier script which is probably why the Symantec service didn't go.

Not sure at this point why HJT didn't remove the 04 entry. OTMI shows the files as gone, so it's only the Registry entry being stubborn. Hopefully removing the others will have the desired effect.

Before we remove all the Reg settings, we need to make a backup just in case of problems (I'm not expecting any but best to be safe).

  • Download ERUNT to your desktop
  • Double-click on the file to install the program
  • Untick the NTREGOPT desktop shortcut option
  • Click No when you get the option to run Erunt at Windows startup.
  • During the installation, tick Launch Erunt
  • Accept the defaults for running a backup
  • Erunt will then backup your registry

Once you've done that.

Disconnect from your Network and the Internet (as last time) and disable CA.

Then

  • Double-click OTMoveIt3.exe to run it.
  • Copy the lines in the codebox below.

Reboot when finished, then run a new HJT scan, if any of the "removed" objects is still there, let me know. Don't bother trying a 2nd run with OTMI.

Summary of the logs I need from you in your next post:
  • OTMoveIt log
  • New HJT log

Please post each log separately to prevent them being cut off by the forum post size limiter.
Good morning, Gary. There are some strange things happening. First, when I went to use MoveIt3, it had vanished. So, I had to download it again. The log follows. But, then when I tried to run HJT, I received an error: " HijackThis has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience." I tried that several times with the same result, and eventually tried to uninstall it through the Control Panel, "install/uninstall programs" but received the same report. At this point, I can't use it and I can't uninstall it. I'm open to your suggestions. I'm getting a bit concerned in all this that I might be transmitting my personal data to some hacker everytime I'm on the internet. Anyway, here's the MoveIt log. Couple of "not founds" and several "deleted successfully." I think I'm going to call it a night. As always, thank you. Don't like the sound of these latest symptoms, I think we need to look a little deeper into your computer to see if we can find what's causing them.

First

Download DDS and save it to your Desktop (must be in this location).
Disable any script blocker, and then double click dds.com to run the tool.
  • When done, DDS will open two (2) logs:
    • DDS.txt
    • Attach.txt
  • Save both to your Desktop.
  • Copy/Paste the contents of both into your next reply please.

Next

Download GMER and unzip it to your Desktop. (It will create a folder GMER)

Alternate Download Site

  • Disconnect from the Internet, and close all running programmes.
  • There is a small chance this programme may crash your computer, so save any work you have open.
  • Open the GMER folder, and double click gmer.exe
  • Let the gmer.sys driver load if asked.
  • If it gives you a warning at programme start about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run a scan ….. click OK.
  • If no warning:
    • Click Rootkit tab.
    • Ensure that All the boxes to the right of the program are checked except Show All.
    • Click Scan.
  • Do not use your computer while the scan is running.
  • Once scan is finished click Copy.
    • Click Start > Run then type Notepad.exe then click OK.
    • This will open a Notepad file.
    • Hit Ctrl+V to paste log into it.
    • Save the log to your Desktop.
  • Reconnect to internet and post the log please.

Summary of the logs I need from you in your next post:
  • DDS.txt
  • Attach.txt
  • GMER log

Please post each log separately to prevent them being cut off by the forum post size limiter.
