I've just bought a Buffalo Drive station USB hard drive 1TB. If I leave it connected the computer won't boot. I've been into BIOS and changed to boot from hard drive C. It boots fine if the usb is disconnected but the hard drive is not seen when the usb is reconnected nor does it switch off when the computer does or function correctly. The hard drive is recognized if I connect usb and power after the computer boots up and it functions correctly Device manager gives code 10 to the problem when the usb is connected retrospectively and power left on A Dell dimension 4600 with XP service pack 3 All ideas welcome Thanks
Hi and welcome to What The Tech!

Device manager gives code 10 to the problem when the usb is connected retrospectively and power left on

Device Manager gives a code? You mean Event Log Viewer, right?

Have you installed all the drivers for the external hard drive?

In Device Manager we can find out if anything is wrong with your hardware.
  • Right-click on My Computer
  • Click Manage
  • Now click on Device Manager
  • Expand all the sections and check them for any exclamation marks. Make a note of it
  • We need to know the section where the device was found and the name of the device

By viewing the Event Viewer logs we could maybe find out what is wrong.
  • Go to Start
  • Click on Run
  • In the box, type eventvwr
  • Look at the System and Application log files and note any that are red and made at the time you have a problem
  • We need to know the Event ID and Source.

Please let us know.

Regards,
John.
System Service control manager 7000 or Service control manager 7009 Application Application Hang 1002 Application error 1000 Checked Device manager no exclamation marks. I downloaded new updates from Dell for BIOS it seems to start up sweet now at least so far so good. Thanks for the help John

Clear as mud to me John although it makes a kind of sense. I rebooted again to get the time precise Ed
Thanks for putting me on the right track John. I've sorted the live update issue (Norton) ages old. I now need to investigate the service control manager as the computer hangs doesn't close down but at least the hardware now connects. System restore?
Hi,

It seems to be a driver/service problem. We will go into the services administration tool of Windows where you can change settings of services:
  • Click Start
  • Choose Run
  • Type services.msc and press Enter or click OK
  • A window will open
  • Try and find General Purpose USB Driver or something like that
    • If it is not there, let me know
    • If it is there, go on
  • Right-click on the name of the service (General Purpose USB Driver)
  • Choose Properties
  • Make sure the Startup type is set to Automatic
  • Also take note of the Service status
  • Now click OK and close the opened window

Reboot and let us know if this helped, what the setting was set to and what the service was.

Regards,
John.
Hi John The two nearest to it are plug and play which is set to automatic and universal plug and play which is set to manual. No General Purpose USB Driver though. It has booted up ok some times but its not consistent.
for what it's worth, universal plug n' play service is now showing the ability for holes to be opened up in NAT routers; causing security concerns.

if you don't need the service, it's best to disable it and its sister/parent service SSDP Discovery Service.

There's a free product that will turn off universal plug and play capability for you. it is here

just thought that i'd mention it for your review.
