[Resolved] IE pop ups in Firefox - My Hijack log

I'm always using Firefox, yet get pop ups in Internet Explorer. I believe my brother is the only one in the family that uses IE, but he also gets IE pop ups. Everyone else uses Firefox, and gets IE pop ups also.

I've updated all of my anti virus and anti adware/spyware/malware programs and ran them all in Safe Mode. These include:

Ad-Aware
Windows Defender
SUPER Anti Spyware
Spybot - Search and Destroy

On first run, I get over 300 infections detected when using SUPER Anti Spyware. They seemed to be Adware from the list it came up with. The most popular name I saw was MyWebSearch. I always get tracking cookies with almost every scan too, even after deleting them.

Even after running these programs and deleting everything though, I keep getting IE pop ups. So here is my first Hijack log below. Any more info needed, please ask. Thank you for your help.

Computer system:

Windows Vista Home Premium
32-bit operating system
Service Pack 1

Sorry about the delay in responding :(

If you still need help, Scan again with HijackThis, and "copy/paste" a new log file into this thread.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
A late reply is better than no reply! Thanks for the response =) I do not use the family computer often as I have my own, so I only really use it when I have to fix something on it! But after doing all of the scans and everything, my family have all said they are not getting pop ups any more, so I am guessing the scanners did the trick in the end. I guess it must have taken a reboot or two to fully get rid of them, because right now we are not having any problems with it. However, if I do get anything else again, I'll be sure to do a new log and post it here. Thanks again.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Sixth Face] "C:\ProgramData\junkmodemode.ve8ioxa"
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [iso data fast cast] "C:\ProgramData\bone dart size.g5ufi"

Those are a sign of a Lop infection.
I take it that is bad! What can that do to a computer? Could that have caused the pop ups? And of course, what would be the best way to get rid of it? I am not at the family PC at the moment, but if there's anything you can give me right now so I can do it when I get to it, that would be great. Otherwise, if you do need more info I will get on to it when I can.
You might want to print these instructions out.

1. These tools MUST be run from the executable. (.exe)
2. With Admin Rights (Right click, choose "Run as Administrator")

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
Download - ATF Cleaner
Right-click ATF-Cleaner.exe and select "Run as administrator" to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

(If you use FireFox or the Opera browser
To keep saved passwords, click No at the prompt.)

It's normal after running ATF cleaner that the PC will be slower to boot the first time or two.

Then:

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.

  • Right-click mbam-setup.exe, select "Run as administrator" and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location and post the results.
Also "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.
First of all, please excuse the later reponse from myself. I have only just now managed to get time to use the family desktop.

Malwarebyte's Log
Right, I did everything you said. And using Malwarebytes I got no infections. But here are the results from the log regardless:

1. These tools MUST be run every time you run them from the executable. (.exe)
2. With Admin Rights (Right click, choose "Run as Administrator")

Download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1
Link 2
Link 3

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. Note: If you are having difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, or are unsure as to what programs need to be disabled, please refer to the information available through this link : Protective Programs

  • Right click on ComboFix.exe, Run as Administrator & follow the prompts.

Note: Combofix will run without adding the Windows Recovery Console

  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.
"copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread as well.

Notes:

1.Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer's settings, including making I-E the default browser.
3. Combofix prevents autorun of ALL CD, floppy and USB devices to assist with malware removal & increase security. If this is an issue or makes it difficult for you – please tell your helper.
4. CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.

Give it atleast 20-30 minutes to finish if needed.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
ComboFix log is attached with post.

Concerning how my computer is behaving, I have to say I am not seeing any obvious problems. It seems fine to my eyes and there doesn't seem to be any IE pop ups, which was my original concern. But that's not to say there aren't any infections underneath, right?

Thank you for your continued support. I hope the information provided is good to you.[attachment removed]

Computer still behaving as normal to my eyes.

EDIT: After posting this message I had a problem whereby I tried shutting down my computer via clicking the Shutdown button from the Start menu, and it didn't do anything. I tried clicking Sleep, Restart and nothing happened. Then tried opening Firefox and it couldn't do that. Tried opening the Control Panel and it couldn't do that. In the end, I had to hold the Power button on the computer tower itself to turn the machine off. Upon reboot, I could not shutdown via clicking again and again had to hold the power button to restart.

I once again tested the clicking of the power button and it now seems to be working fine. I can shutdown freely now. But I just thought I should post that problem incase it was a side effect of ComboFix or something after it deleted certain things from my computer.
Ad-Watch

Please disable Ad-Watch, as it may hinder the removal of some HijackThis entries. You can re-enable it after your computer is clean.

To disable Ad-Watch:

1. Right click on the Ad-Watch icon in the system tray and select "Restore Ad-Watch".
2. At the bottom of the screen there will be two checkable items called "Active" and "Automatic".Active: Switches Monitoring On or Off without closing
Automatic: Switches Automatic Blocking On or Off
3. Uncheck (red X) both items.

1. All tools MUST be run from the executable. (.exe)
With Admin Rights (Right click, choose "Run as Administrator")

Run hijackthis. Hit None of the above, Click Do a System Scan Only. Put a checkmark/tick in the box on the left side on these:

O23 - Service: Bonjour Service - Unknown owner - C:\Program Files\Bonjour\mDNSResponder.exe (file missing)

Close ALL windows and browsers except HijackThis and click "Fix checked"

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
I did the above. Computer still seems to be behaving normally. New Hijack log:

Good job

  • Click START Search
  • Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK. Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.

Here's my usual all clean post

    Log looks good :D

    • Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
      • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
      • Click once on the Security tab
      • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
      • Click once on the Custom Level button.
      • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
      • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
      • Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
      • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
      • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
      • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
      • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
      • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
    • Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
  • Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperative that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week
(Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

  • Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer.
Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over.
I am very serious about this and see it happen almost every day with my clients.
Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.

  • Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly.
This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer.
If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site
until there are no more critical updates.

  • Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly.
Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.

Only run one Anti-Virus and Firewall program.

I would also suggest you read this:
So how did I get infected in the first place?
by Tony Klein
My friend, thank you so much for helping me out. I am in your debt. So is it completely necessary to have ComboFix uninstalled in the end? Would it not be simpler to just leave it installed? Either way, thank you very much once again!
