[Closed] Search engine jumps to unwanted site

I ran Hijack this and got the log below. Can you tell me what to delete. My problem. An example would be if I put in the search engine "weather" and got the option of the metoffice - if I click to go to the site - it jumps to another site such as "blink" or some other advertising site. I have tried running spybot and the like - but it will not load. I sometimes get "internet explorer cannot access site" although there is nothing wrong with my wireless connection.

Hello tax-bill


I see you have two Antivirus programs installed McAfee and AVG8. I recommend uninstalling one of them.
Two programs do not offer more protection, in fact it can be worse, they can conflict and cause system instability.
Once you have taken care of that, I suggest you do the following:

Download ComboFix from one of these locations:

VERY IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

* IMPORTANT - Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, (McAfee or AVG,WindowsDefender, Adaware) usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. If you have difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, refer to this link here
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

  • Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

  • Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.
Notes:
1. Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. Do not "re-run" Combofix. If you have a problem, reply back for further instructions.
3. ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer's settings, including making I-E the default browser.
4. Combofix prevents autorun of ALL CD, floppy and USB devices to assist with malware removal & increase security. If this is an issue or makes it difficult for you – please advise.
5. CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.


Please make sure you include the combo fix log in your next reply as well as describe how your computer is running now

Thanks for the prompt response. I am corresponding via my office machine so will have to wait until I get home to try the fix on my home computer. I think I may have trouble un-installing my antivirus programs as my computer is very unresponsive to various commands. Do you have any advice that could help. Bill

no progress. From your link I got the messeage Windows internet explorer X Internet explorer cannot download index.php fromforums.whatthetech.com A connection with the server could not be established From my office computer I dowmloaded Combofix.exe on to a memory stick and transferred it to my desktop. I uninstalled AVG and uninstalled Ad Aware and disabled McAfee. I then tried to run Combofix.I got the message "Combofix has encountered a problem and needs to close" To give you further examples of what is wrong. The computer will find ebay but will be unable to find any anti spyware site including your site. X unable to log on Logon failure : user account restriction. Possible reasons are blank passwords not allowed, logon hour restrictions, or a policy restriction has been enforced. Google will jump from the requested site to another unasked for site. With the anti virus disabled I tried to run Spybot from a site - the only way I got into the site was it came up with a spanish site which gave me the option to translate - when I did this my computer somehow gave me access to the site. However when I asked it to run I got the following. Setup downloading to your computer connecting to 127.0.0.1 Error sending request. A connection with the server could not be established. This is what always happens and prevents me from following the steps you advise. Does this make any sense. Bill

Please download ComboFix from Here or Here to your Desktop.

**Note: In the event you already have Combofix, this is a new version that I need you to download. It is important that it is saved and renamed following this process directly to your desktop**
  • If you are using Firefox, make sure that your download settings are as follows:
    • Tools->Options->Main tab
    • Set to "Always ask me where to Save the files".
  • During the download, rename Combofix to Combo-Fix as follows:

  • It is important you rename Combofix during the download, but not after.
  • Please do not rename Combofix to other names, but only to the one indicated.
  • Close any open browsers.
  • Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

    • Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before performing a scan. They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results".
    • Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive. If yours is not listed and you don't know how to disable it, please ask.

    • Close any open browsers.
    • WARNING: Combofix will disconnect your machine from the Internet as soon as it starts
    • Please do not attempt to re-connect your machine back to the Internet until Combofix has completely finished.
    • If there is no internet connection after running Combofix, then restart your computer to restore back your connection.

  • When finished, it will produce a report for you.

I cannot download combofix from your site as I cannot access your site from my home computer. I can download the file on to a memory stick and save to my home desktop. Will this work and should I download the file to stick as Combofix and change it to Combo-fix when I save to desktop or should a save to stick as Combo-fix. Bill

IMPORTANT Download the file to your stick as the renamed file - then transfer it over.

Make sure you delete the old copy from the poorly PC first (if you can)

Thanks for all your help so far. We have been snowed in here - hence the delay in getting back to you.
I have managed to run Combofix and my computer is much better and I was able to run windows defender - no problems and spybot - a few problems removed. However when running spybot I got a couple of messages such as

Hi tax-bill,
Glad you were finally able to get combofix to run on your computer.
We still have a little more work to do, so stay with me.
I suggest you do this:
  • Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before following the steps below.
  • They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results".
Copy/paste the text inside the Codebox below into notepad:

Here's how to do that:
Click Start > Run type Notepad click OK.
This will open an empty notepad file:

Copy all the text inside of the code box, put your mouse cursor at the very beginning of the text and then hold down the left button and drag your mouse so that all of the text is highlighted. Press Ctrl+C (or right click on the highlighted section and choose 'copy')
