[Resolved] Hijacked browser?

14 min read

A colleague has told me I have a hijacked browser. Whenever I first click on a browser (IE or Firefox) it will either partially or completely load the homepage, but then a blank pop-up appears over that screen and that entire window is rendered unusable. If I then open another window of the same browser or the other browser they will open and I can then access the web as normal. So, I can click on IE, wait for it to "lock up", then open another session of IE and the second window will work fine. Or, click on IE, wait, then open and use Firefox.

If I right click on that blank pop-up box and go to "View source", there are references to "sadownload.mcafee.com/products" (and Site Advisor no longer seems to work in IE or Firefox). The only way to get out of the locked browser is shut it down from the Task Manager.

I am running XP Pro (SP3) and am using Avast and the Windows firewall. I have run AdAware, SpyBot, Malware, CCleaner (all of which seemed to find various things) and then a friend told me about HijackThis (see log file attached). BTW, when I tried to install AdAware, the download and/or install was repeatedly blocked (due to this problem?), so I finally downloaded it to another machine, changed the file name, burned it to a disk and was then able to install it.

Thanks for your consideration.

Hi Terry_M, welcome to the forum.

Please be advised, as I'm still in training, all my replies will have to be approved by a teacher or expert before I can post them. This may cause some delays, but I will do my best to keep them as short as possible.

To make cleaning this machine easier
  • Please do not uninstall/install any programs unless asked to
It is more difficult when files/programs are appearing in/disappearing from the logs.
  • Please do not run any scans other than those requested
  • Please follow all instructions in the order posted
  • All logs/reports, etc.. must be posted in Notepad. Please ensure that word wrap is unchecked. In notepad click format, uncheck word wrap if it is checked.
  • Do not attach any logs/reports, etc.. unless specifically requested to do so.
  • If you have problems with or do not understand the instructions, Please ask before continuing.
I will post back soon with additional instructions.

Thanks
Hi Terry_M,

You will need to disable Spybot's Tea Timer function, if it is running, as it may interfere. - this is a two step process.
First step:
  • Right-click the Spybot Icon in the System Tray (looks like a blue/white calendar with a padlock symbol)
  • If you have the new version 1.5, Click once on Resident Protection, then Right click the Spybot icon again and make sure Resident Protection is now Unchecked. The Spybot icon in the System tray should now be now colorless.
  • If you have Version 1.4, Click on Exit Spybot S&D Resident
Second step, For Either Version :
  • Open Spybot S&D
  • Click Mode, choose Advanced Mode
  • Go To the bottom of the Vertical Panel on the Left, Click Tools
  • then, also in left panel, click Resident shows a red/white shield.
  • If your firewall raises a question, say OK
  • In the Resident protection status frame, Uncheck the box labelled Resident "Tea-Timer"(Protection of over-all system settings) active
  • OK any prompts.
  • Use File, Exit to terminate Spybot
  • Reboot your machine fully for the changes to take effect.
All right we'll start with removing the remnant of Symantec and go from there.

Download the Norton Removal Tool from HERE and save it to your desktop. You will use it later.

Go to add/remove programs and uninstall any program with Symantec in the name.

While you are at it, you may want to consider this:

I see that Viewpoint is installed. Viewpoint, Viewpoint Manager, Viewpoint Media Player are Viewpoint components which are installed as a side effect of installing other software, most notably AOL and AOL Instant Messenger (AIM). Viewpoint Manager is responsible for managing and updating Viewpoint Media Player’s components. You can disable this using the Viewpoint Manager Control Panel found in the Windows Control Panel menu. By selecting Disable auto-updating for the Viewpoint Manager – the player will no longer attempt to check for updates. Anything that is installed without your consent is suspect. Read what Viewpoint says and make your own decision.

To provide a satisfying consumer experience and to operate effectively, the Viewpoint Media Player periodically sends information to servers at Viewpoint. Each installation of the Viewpoint Media Player is identifiable to Viewpoint via a Customer Unique Identifier (CUID), an alphanumeric identifier embedded in the Viewpoint Media Player. The Viewpoint Media Player randomly generates the CUID during installation and uses it to indicate a unique installation of the product. A CUID is never connected to a user's name, email address, or other personal contact information. CUIDs are used for the sole purpose of filtering redundant information. Each of these information exchanges occurs anonymously.

Viewpoint Manager is considered as foistware instead of malware since it is often installed without user's approval but doesn't spy or do anything "bad". This may change, read Viewpoint to Plunge Into Adware
It is STRONGLY recommended that you remove the Viewpoint products; however, decide for yourself. To uninstall the Viewpoint components (Viewpoint, Viewpoint Manager, Viewpoint Media Player):

  • Click Start, then Settings, then click Control Panel.
  • In Control Panel, double-click Add or Remove Programs.
  • In Add or Remove Programs, Remove the Viewpoint component
  • Do the same for each Viewpoint component.

Reboot after you have finished the uninstalls.

Next double click Norton_Removal_Tool.exe to run the tool.

Follow the on-screen instructions.
Your computer may be restarted more than once, and you may be asked to repeat some steps after the computer restarts.

Next, in Windows Explorer, navigate to these folder and if found, please delete them
  • C:\Program Files\Symantec
  • C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared
If you have chosen to uninstall Viewpoint, you can also delete these folders
  • C:\Program Files\Viewpoint
  • C:\Program Files\Common Files\Viewpoint
You have a little spyware showing.

Open HJT, do a system scan only, check mark these lines if present,

  • double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application
  • Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply.
Extra Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process,if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediatly.

Please post back with a new HJT (hijackthis) log and the MBAM log. Let us know how your computer is now.

Thanks
Hi,

Thank you very much for your detailed and easy to follow instructions. I completed all the steps with no problems, including removal of Viewpoint as you suggested. Alas, I still have the same issue with the browsers.

Hi Terry_M,

When did this problem start? Before you installed avast or afterwards?

Before we dig deeper, let's see if this is related to Site Advisor.

Open HJT and do a system scan only. Checkmark the following lines if present

O4 - HKCU\..\RunOnce: [] C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe http://www.symantec.com/techsupp/servlet/P…000046.000000b5
O16 - DPF: {CE28D5D2-60CF-4C7D-9FE8-0F47A3308078} - https://www-secure.symantec.com/techsupp/ac…ta/SymAData.dll
O16 - DPF: {E77C0D62-882A-456F-AD8F-7C6C9569B8C7} - https://www-secure.symantec.com/techsupp/ac…/ActiveData.cab

Close all other windows/browsers and click fix checked. Answer Yes if prompted. Close HJT.

I'd like you to reboot your computer after the HJT fix, but copy this down first so you can refer to it after you reboot

Make sure all IE browsers are closed
  • click the start button,
  • highlight all programs,
  • highlight accessories,
  • highlight System Tools,
  • click Internet Explorer (no add ons)
This will lauuch IE without any add ones. You will get a popup notifing you that add ons are disabled.

Does the problem persist?

Thanks
Hi, I did find and fix the 3 entries in HJT. (I noticed several other lines in the scan that reference Site Advisor but did not touch any of them.) IE will run with the add ons disabled, as will Firefox in safe mode. Neither browser will run if add ons are enabled. This issue started around Christmas, before I installed Avast (I replaced AVG with Avast in early January). Thanks!
Hi Terry_M,

It looks like Site Advisor may be the culprit. IE with no add ons is just that, plain IE. The same with Firefox in safe mode. Site Advisor won't be running in safe mode.

Site Advisor could be corrupted. I suggest you uninstall Site Advisor and we'll see what happens. You can always re-install it or use a different program. After we are finished here, I can refer you to another part of WhatTheTech where the folks there can advise you on what best to use.

Uninstall instructions and a removal tool can be found HERE
Please note that the removal tool will remove all Mcafee products. So if you have any other Mcafee products you may not want to use the tool.

After you uninstall site advisor, reboot your computer and try IE and Firefox in normal windows.

It also looks like your java may be down a notch or two.

Please download JavaRa to your desktop and unzip it to its own folder
  • Run JavaRa.exe, pick the language of your choice and click Select. Then click Remove Older Versions.
  • Accept any prompts.
  • Open JavaRa.exe again and select Search For Updates.
  • Select Update Using Sun Java's Website then click Search and click on the Open Webpage button. Download and install the latest Java Runtime Environment (JRE) version for your computer.

We may as well have a look at a few other things while you are here, this is quick

Please download DDS and save it to your desktop.
  • Disable any script blocking protection
  • Double click dds.scr to run the tool.
  • When done, DDS.txt will open.
  • Click Yes at the next prompt for Optional Scan.
  • Save both reports to your desktop.
—————————————————

Please include the contents of the following in your next reply:

DDS.txt

Please attach the second file; Attach.txt. To attach a file, do the following:
  • Under the reply panel is the Attachments Panel
  • Browse for the attachment file you want to upload, then click the green Upload button
  • Once it has uploaded, click the Manage Current Attachments drop down box
  • Click on [external image: Posted Image] to insert the attachment into your post

Let us know how you made out.

Thanks
Hi, Yes, sorry, but have been away for a couple days. I was not able to uninstall Site Advisor in Add/Remove Programs (perhaps because the files were corrupted…?), but went ahead and used the McAfee removal tool, which gave me a "cleanup successful" message and the browsers now come up properly. After running the tool, Site Advisor no longer shows as being installed so it looks like this worked. I downloaded JavaRa as mentioned and also have installed JRE 5.0 update 17. Please see Attach.txt as requested and the DDS info is here: DDS (Ver_09-02-01.01) - NTFSx86 Run by [removed] at 11:49:36.93 on Fri 02/06/2009 Internet Explorer: 7.0.5730.11 BrowserJavaVersion: 1.6.0 Microsoft Windows XP Professional 5.1.2600.3.1252.1.1033.18.1023.435 [GMT -5:00] AV: avast! antivirus 4.8.1296 [VPS 090206-0] *On-access scanning enabled* (Updated) ============== Running Processes =============== C:\WINDOWS\system32\Ati2evxx.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost -k DcomLaunch svchost.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe -k netsvcs svchost.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\Ati2evxx.exe svchost.exe C:\Program Files\Lavasoft\Ad-Aware\aawservice.exe C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\aswUpdSv.exe C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashServ.exe C:\WINDOWS\Explorer.EXE C:\WINDOWS\system32\spoolsv.exe C:\Program Files\Adobe\Photoshop Elements 5.0\PhotoshopElementsFileAgent.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Apple\Mobile Device Support\bin\AppleMobileDeviceService.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe C:\Program Files\HP\HP Software Update\HPWuSchd2.exe C:\PROGRA~1\Sony\SONICS~1\SsAAD.exe C:\Program Files\Picasa2\PicasaMediaDetector.exe C:\Program Files\Google\Google Desktop Search\GoogleDesktop.exe C:\Program Files\Adobe\Photoshop Elements 5.0\apdproxy.exe C:\Program Files\CyberLink\PowerDVD\PDVDServ.exe C:\Program Files\lg_fwupdate\fwupdate.exe C:\Program Files\Bonjour\mDNSResponder.exe C:\Program Files\Nero\Nero 7\InCD\NBHGui.exe C:\Program Files\Nero\Nero 7\InCD\InCD.exe C:\Program Files\Nero\Nero 7\InCD\InCDsrv.exe C:\Program Files\iTunes\iTunesHelper.exe C:\PROGRA~1\ALWILS~1\Avast4\ashDisp.exe C:\Program Files\Messenger\msmsgs.exe C:\Program Files\ATI Technologies\ATI.ACE\Core-Static\MOM.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\LxrJD31s.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\ctfmon.exe C:\Program Files\CyberPower PowerPanel Personal Edition\pppeuser.exe C:\Program Files\Google\Google Desktop Search\GoogleDesktop.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\nvsvc32.exe C:\Program Files\HP\Digital Imaging\bin\hpqtra08.exe C:\Program Files\CyberPower PowerPanel Personal Edition\ppped.exe C:\Program Files\Kodak\Kodak EasyShare software\bin\EasyShare.exe C:\Program Files\CyberLink\Shared Files\RichVideo.exe C:\lotus\wordpro\ltsstart.exe C:\lotus\smartctr\suitest.exe C:\Program Files\ATI Technologies\ATI.ACE\Core-Static\ccc.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\ScsiAccess.EXE C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Works Shared\wkcalrem.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe -k imgsvc C:\Program Files\Canon\CAL\CALMAIN.exe C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashMaiSv.exe C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashWebSv.exe C:\Program Files\iPod\bin\iPodService.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\wuauclt.exe C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\msiexec.exe C:\Documents and Settings\William Morrison\Desktop\dds.scr ============== Pseudo HJT Report =============== uSearch Page = hxxp://www.google.com uSearch Bar = hxxp://www.google.com/ie uSearchMigratedDefaultURL = hxxp://www.google.com/search?q={searchTerms}&sourceid=ie7&rls=com.microsoft:en-US&ie=utf8&oe=utf8 uInternet Connection Wizard,ShellNext = iexplore uInternet Settings,ProxyOverride = *.local uSearchURL,(Default) = hxxp://www.google.com/keyword/%s mSearchAssistant = hxxp://www.google.com/ie uURLSearchHooks: Yahoo! Hi Terry_M

Sorry about the java. I should have given you the version to update to. JRE 5.0 update 17 is the most current for java 5. With XP you should have version JRE6 Update11

Please rerun JavaRA
  • Run JavaRa.exe, pick the language of your choice and click Select. Then click Remove Older Versions.
  • Accept any prompts.
  • Open JavaRa.exe again and select Search For Updates.
  • Select Update Using Sun Java's Website then click Search and click on the Open Webpage button. Download and install the latest Java Runtime Environment (JRE) version for your computer.
The current version is JRE6 Update 11
Note JRE6 Update12 may be offered. It is the same except it has support for 64 bit browsers. Either one will be ok)

There is still one element of Viewpoint showing in the uninstall list. Viewpoint Tool bar. Please uninstall it via ADD/Remove programs. That one seems to be missing from the canned speech I posted earlier. :smack:

Since we did find some malware, I'd like you to do an online scan, just to be sure.

Go here to run an online scannner from ESET:
http://www.eset.eu/online-scanner

(Note: You must use Internet Explorer for this scan.)

  • Tick the box next to YES, I accept the Terms of Use.
  • Click Start
  • When asked, allow the activex control to install
  • Disable your Antivirus software. You can usually do this with its Notfication Tray icon near the clock
  • Click Start
  • Make sure that the option "Remove found threats" is Unchecked, and the option "Scan unwanted applications" is Checked.
  • Click Scan.
  • Wait for the scan to finish.
  • Re-enable your Antivirus software.
  • A logfile is created and located at C:\Program Files\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt. We will need this later.
Please post back with the ESET log and a new HJT log. Please let us know how the computer is.

Thanks
Hi, I have updated Java with JRE6 Update 11 and uninstalled that piece of Viewpoint. I have been unable to run the online scanner from ESET however. I did temporarily disable Avast and tried numerous times to run it, but even adjusting ActiveX in the security settings didn't help (this is in IE 7). A tech savvy colleague of mine also tried to run it (he is using IE 6) but also was unable to. After clicking on "Yes" to accept the terms and then the "Start" button, a pop-up appears with "The publisher could not be verified. Are you sure you want to install". We clicked on "Install", but then the next screen is blank (the left nav bar still shows however) with a small red "X" in the upper left of the screen. I also tried to do a trial download for 30 days to get the file to run offline. This involves getting an ID and password, but that process seems somewhat convoluted and didn't seem to work either. Not having been able to complete that step, I have not re-run HJT as yet. Is there some other scanner you might suggest? Thanks.
Hi Terry_M

Eset can be like that sometimes. Use this one instead.

Remember to disable Avast's Standard Shield before the scan and re-enable afterwards.

Please go to Kaspersky website and perform an online antivirus scan.
  • Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
  • It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions.
  • You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
  • When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
  • Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button
    • Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
    • Archives
    • Mail databases
  • Click on My Computerr under Scan.
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
  • You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As….
  • Save this report to a convenient place. Desktop is a good place.
  • Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.
  • Please post this log in your next reply along with a new HijackThis log.
Thanks

Thanks!!
Hi Terry_M

Looks good. Thanks for your patience with this.

Open HJT, do a system scan only, checkmark the following line, if present

O18 - Protocol: sacore - {5513F07E-936B-4E52-9B00-067394E91CC5} - (no file)

Close all other browsers/windows and click fix checked. Close HJT.

Let's clean up.

From your desktop please delete

Norton_Removal_Tool.exe
MCPR.exe
Attach.txt
DDS.txt

In windows explorer, please delete this folder
c:\documents and settings\allusers\application data\NortonInstaller

I suggest you keep MBAM. Keep it updated and use it as an on demand scanner.

Remember to re-enable Teatimer after you have completed the rest.

You can get advice on a replacement program for Site Advisor in this part of the forum.
OR

If you wish to continue using Site Advisor you can get the newest version HERE

We will keep this thread open for a couple of days. Please post back if you have any problems or questions. Please post back when you have finished so this thread can be marked "Resolved".

Take care :adios:
Hi, I've gone through and updated all the items you referenced, e.g. deleted various files, installed Spyware Blaster, re-enabled TeaTimer, etc. After doing some looking around I've decided to try WOT, rather than re-install Site Advisor, which seemed to be the root of the trouble. This episode has certainly been an eye-opener and has made me even more cautious than I already was…. :) Thank you very much for all of your help - you've been very generous with your time!!
